I might that the radio wasn't protected against the telephone line frequency. That's why I wouldn't buy this radio, because Eton bought the name Grundig, which used to be a well known german brand from Furth in Germany.
The button layout looks similar to the Grundig G3 that I have, which also has SSB & Air Band. I wonder if this Eton Satellit was a successor to the G3. It looks like they may have added a few features and improved some other features compared to the G3. Great review. 👍
De_Cos1972 You are correct. I'm pretty sure that the Satellit is a DSP unit, but not 100% sure maybe todderbert can confirm this? I have the Eton E5 (Grundig G5) with the lighted keypad. A cool radio and decent reception but the frequency readout was off by 1 kHz and plagued by many birdies....poor QC.
watershed44 Where I live, my G3 is also plagued by some AM imaging, including hearing WABC on 1540 and a mix of WABC (770) & WPAT (930) on 1700. Not good for AM if you live too close to certain local stations.
De_Cos1972 Interesting also my Eton E5 does NOT have soft mute tuning. Weirdly my E5 is EXCELLENT on AM/MW. I don't notice any imaging on my unit, however if you listen to 160m 1800-1990 kHz there are quite a few horribly loud birdies from the PLL synthesizer chip while there are still some on higher SW frequencies but less of them. Even back in mid 2000s when this unit was made Eton had very inconsistent QC in china.
I have the G3 and the G5 in house, they may or may not get reviewed because of technical issues with them. The G3 is very close as far as button layout, the volume was changed to an analog style on the Satellit, which I like. The box says the Satellit is PLL. My G5 blows the Satellit out of the water on MW, but not on FM or SW. Though I enjoy the no mute on tuning of the G5.
OK Peter, I am not qualified to call you by your first name Sir. todderbert Shouldn’t he call you Todd or Bert? ;) You ever going to explain the nickname? I’ve always wanted to know but thought it impolite to ask. Tonight, however, I’m throwing caution to the wind!
Can you please check the LONGWAVE RANGE FREQUENCY?? Is it 150 - 285 kHz ??? How about expanded LW band up to 513 kHz like Eton Traveller III , TECSUN PL-365 and DEGEN DE1103 (KAITO KA1103)?? Does Executive Satellit have expanded LW too??
I have the Grundig Executive Satellit and the Traveller III. The AM reception for both radios is very similar. I noticed if you set the Satellit to the narrowest bandwidth, the AM sensitivity seems to improve a bit. I think it would interesting to see a daytime AM shootout between your Satellit and your Traveller III, concentrating on the weaker stations. I agree with you about the FM and airband reception. Like your Satellit, excellent for my Satellit.
The video is actually already made and will roll out during the week..I actually stop the MW scan before going through the entire band on the Satellit after showing how much stronger the Traveler III was. I also brought a Passive loop into play to boost the Satellit so it would equal the Traveler without it.
Todderbert your talent is showing great review of a highly functional radio. Can't understand why this radio comes up short on AM, love the functionality of this radio but AM is important wonder if there might be something wrong with your particular radio. Jay Allen is an AM radio guru of sorts and he likes this radio. First class review of a radio that might seem too complex to some.
Thank you Mickey, the MW is bugging me now. I find myself wanting to use this radio more for MW and find it disappointing, which you will see in my future band scans. I'm working on returning this one, and possibly getting another.
The Eton Elite Executive and this radio look a like aesthetically, but are they internally the same radio? Is there any difference apart from the branding?
Good stuff as always, Todd. Your Amazon link in the description section goes to the silver-colored "Executive" version of this radio. Amazon also lists the black "Grundig Edition" (as reviewed) separately (from a different supplier) at a substantially (+63.6%) higher unit price. The two radios are identical in size and control layout - do you happen to know if there is a difference in performance between the two versions?
My Executive model was a better performer then then the black one, but this was a quality control issue. I prefer the black color, because the lettering on the Executive is almost impossible to read. I would say get the black satellit from ebay..there is a seller there with these at $105. Just make sure it is easy to return for you, if you get a dud.
my pet peeve with LCD displays is when they opt for white on black, it's much harder to read than black on white. I know I'm picky, but that's a dealbreaker for me. yes I know that you can change it by taking it apart and putting a rotated polarized film inside, but I really shouldn't have to do that.
What a radio of so many radios I have seen you rehired so far I love this, it looks awesome. I am a radio crazy kid but this radio is not being sold not even on eBay a used one why is that?
A fan of original "Grundig -Satelittes" who knows the former big cabinets and the outstanding quality in reception and "made in Germany" gets tears in the eyes about what has happened with the "Grundig-Satellite" name and what they get delivered from China nowadays. Eton Grundig Edition Satellit has absolute nothing to do with the original Grundig-Satelitte-series from mid-sixtees untill 2003. These kind of radios might be better "Yacht Boys", the smaller and far cheaper travel-radios created by the original Grundig-brand. A shame!
Agree mostly except my AM is actually pretty good. The LW is where mine falls down. The whip or external antennas make no difference to its poor reception. Weird
Which came first coz there’s a model without the Grundig Edition badging on top. Just the Field BT on the top right side. I guess this is the new model because I saw a video on UA-cam which was uploaded on 2014. Correct me if I am wrong. I need answers. Thanks!
I remember when WCFS 105.9 was fresh 105.9. You’re listening to the new sound of fresh WCFS HD1 Elmwood Park Chicago. Until it was changed to News radio. Fresh was moved to HD2 until February 2019
How about doing a comparison between the Eton Grundig Edition Satellit and the Eton Grundig Edition Traveller III on the AM and FM bands, both to test sensitivity and DX reach in the daytime and evening. I did see your short comments about your earlier comparison of the two on the AM band, the nod going to the Traveller III in daytime testing and it being pretty much a tie on AM testing in the evening. But, your earlier test was done in the summer months and it now may be interesting how they do in winter ionosphere skip conditions. As either a combo vid or standalone, maybe even bring in daddy Eton Grundig Edition Field BT and cousins Tecsun S-8800 and C. Crane CCRadio-SW to see how they score against each other. IMHO, all are pretty amazing sets and have their own strengths. I own multiple sets of each, the bug having flown north from your area across the IL-WI border and having bit me too lol! Keep up the great work and thanks!
The Executive Satellit I purchased did better on AM and was fairly equal on AM compared to the Traveller. FM was better on the Satellit. Unfortunatly my Executive Satellit died and I sent it back, I'm upset with the quality of Eton products of late, so I have decided to stay away from them for now. As far as the Field, SW, and 8800. I would chose the CC SW in a heartbeat for AM, the Field for FM and the 8800 for SSB SW. My Field BT is horrible on AM, but rocks on FM. MY CC SW isn't great on FM but rocks on AM. The S-8800 is better on AM then my Field BT but not FM, SW SSB performance is fantastic. Tuning the S-8800 is amazing, I love the smooth fine tuning with no chuffing. The CC SW may have a lower noise floor, and includes the ability to attenuate the signal.
I never figured out how to use a SW. What to look for. When. I would scan the frequency and get religious stations, for example out of Maine, or I'd hear an occasional ham operator in Europe, but I never understood what the big draw is for SW. Why don't you do a tutorial on it??
Mainly for culture. I like to listen to Voice of Greece for the music, BBC for world news, Radio France, ect. Some broadcasts out of Florida can be interesting. Cuban & South American Music. All fun stuff. Conditions have to be good to get most of those and you have to know when they are on the air relative to your timezone and time of day. HAMs can be rather boring, rarely do I find an interesting conversation and it is usually on the 2m band :)
So how is this different from the Elite Executive? Is it just a newer model? Or just new stickers on the outside ;) ? Thanks! *Edited to add: If you could only buy one, would you get the Elite Executive or the Tecsun PL880? Thanks!!
Hmmm todderbert this radio is also very interesting, with RDS and Line in /out and input for extra Antenna. So which one is better... Skywave SSB oder this Eton Grundig?
After my third Satellit I would say this radio is better on reception. Keep in mind though that this radio is not pocket sized. The Skywave is very compact and holds it own very well. Quality control on Eton radios have been dodgy of late.
@@todderbert Thank you very much, yes that's right, the Eton is already bigger, but has some features I like. I'm really undecided. Difficult decision ... hmmmmm
@@DXLUPO The speaker audio on the Satellit is superior. It does have a local/dx switch on it. Tuning is very similar to the Skywave SSB when in SSB mode. You give up NOAA Weather Radio & Alerts that the Skywave has.
@@todderbert Thank you for your support in finding the right radio for me. Incidentally, I'm German and live in Germany, NOAA Weather does not exist here :-)
I was really interested in picking up this radio until I discovered ATS only works on FM! What a bizarre ommision. I feel ATS is pretty much a must have feature on SW. Works superbly on the Xhdata D-808, Radiwow R-108 and PL310ET.
I have the Xhdata and the Radiowow and this radio too. This Eton kicks both the others into touch on MW and is better with a plugged in FM antenna in the attic. I love this radio tbh. it is amazing
Not sure what you did with yours, but I got one of these last week, the silver one which I believe is a newer model, and the AM isn't that bad. I logged Radio Rebelde from Cuba on it last night, at either 1,700 or 2,000 miles. (Depending on which of the transmitters it was from, there are multiple around the island on 530 kHz)
I just got an Elite Executive. Now, I’m wondering if I need a Satellite too. LOL! I’ll have to watch this video again and see what major differences there are between the 2
I often wonder, If somewhere, Perhaps Overseas, There's Warehouses, with long forgotten Classic Radio's, From the 1950's to the 70's, Just waiting to be Re-Discovered---
It does very well until it comes to MW, the Fields beats it. The Satellit is much more portable, has AIR and SSB, and way more presets. FM is equal, the SW is about the same, though I have not tried an external antenna with the Field. Two different radios for sure.
Im so lost with these kind of radios. I'm looking to buy one for my husband. We moved to a town where there's very few weak signals, so I want to get him a radio that he'd be able to listen to more stations from other places. Possibly worldwide? Will this do? Will he need a membership like with Sirius satellite radios? Thanks!
The radios I prefer at the moment are the XHDATA D-808, C.Crane Skywave SSB and the Digitech AR-1780, The C.Crane will be the most expensive, but they are in the US and have a great warranty and no hassle return policy. CC Skywave SSB: ua-cam.com/video/5dQ3FWrBkmE/v-deo.html , XHDATA D-808: ua-cam.com/video/qAlLvsgpl9w/v-deo.html and the Digitech AR-1780: ua-cam.com/video/j3T_cheffC8/v-deo.html . All three of these radios will allow him to listen to worldwide shortwave broadcasts and amateur HAM radio operators.
I believe that the Eton Grundig Edition Satellit represents the best bang for the buck of any shortwave radio that you can buy new today. Moreover, of all the shortwave radios that I’ve tried, it’s as close to being the ‘perfect’ radio that I’m always talking about. I feel so strongly about this that I bought two spares from Radioworld just in case anything happens to my primary one. I live a short drive from Radioworld so I drop in regularly and I was lucky enough to get them on sale for $99 each (around $80 USD). How could I resist? If you don’t have one, buy one IMMEDIATELY as they are no longer being made and the price will never be lower. todderbert: Eton packaging is really cheap and they all come in that clear plastic stuffed into a box made of the thinnest cardboard imaginable. What can you do? As for your experience with MW, I think you might have a dud. I get fantastic MW reception. Seriously. It’s better than my Sangean ATS-909X and my Tecsuns PL-660, 680, and 880. You should exchange it.
@@MikeWood Yes, I got the Executive on sale for $109 on Amazon: amzn.to/2Rfzi9e and it is working great on MW. There will be a Daytime and Evening band scan video published this month or in January.
I concur with your advice. I also own two of these Executive Elite units that I also bought on Amazon as “renewed” from Amazon directly. I paid around $84 and $104 for each of them and they work great! Whenever I find another one for sale around the same price, I’ll snatch it up. Once these units are sold out, that’s it. And we all notice that not many companies are making top end shortwave radios which motivated me to acquire a large collection of over a dozen radios from names we all love and nearly all were purchased as renewed or on sale. I plan to buy an Eton S-2000 (I may be off on the nomenclature since I get them mixed up since the brand name change) from Anon-Co for $285 and stick with I have in my collection.
@@todderbert I have this radio . I can enter in the frequency in AM mode but it does not have a decimal after the first two numbers. For example 27385 kHz. Is that the same as 27.385 kHz ?
Great review but I have to disagree on the AM I find mine is a very capable AM receiver, no complaints at all for a radio of this size, you must have a bad one.
For Europe all of that is more-less past. Radio is digitalized over the DAB+ and SW MW LW dont have any radio station anymore. Noone broadcast over that waves. Only MW station which i can clearly catch in my part of world is Macedonian public radio 1 from Skopje on 810 khz..
I would recommend this radio over the SSB if you can get a good example. My Black Satellit had a weak AM circuit and I returned it. I just ordered the Executive Satellit from Amazon, crazy good sale atm amzn.to/2ShaavQ . If this radio works on the AM band along with the others then the value of this radio is superior to the Skywave SSB. The Skywave SSB is your ultra compact radio, so if size is an issue, go with that one. My Black Satellit was so amazing on the Air, FM and SW bands.
What is satellite radio? I have favorite radio station in my city, but now I have moved 800 miles away to another city, is this type of radio can catch the transmission of my favorite radio station 800 miles away?...
A cheap Baofeng radio, or Bearcat scanner. If your local police went Digital you will have to spend more. In my area, I use a $15 Quansheng HT that I picked up in Nov 2018 and it works like a charm. Most of my local FD an PDs still use analog.
I bought an Eton elite 750 satellite last Christmas and it didn't last a week before it started cutting in and out, Also the tuning knob wobbles just like all satellite from Grundig and Tecsun. The BFO knob is also way too hard to turn. Eton customer service is abysmal and has had my radio going on three months and still hasn't even looked at it they just told me.... Steer clear of them folks because if you get a lemon like I did their warranty department is out to lunch. A BIG thumbs down!

my pet peeve with LCD displays is when they opt for white on black, it's much harder to read than black on white.
There is a supply line shortage due to the pandemic. The newer version: ua-cam.com/video/YXrTKxo7wtA/v-deo.html
Good review. Thank you!
It is better if this radio had bluetooth and USB support.
Hi todderbert, what is the best radio? Can you list down a few? Thanks
I like the amber coloured display a lot.
A shame!
Todderbert Eton GRUND SATELIT EDITION MW FM LW SW SSB AIR BAND RADIO Receiver I Got FOR MY BIRTHDAY lt is kool
Agree mostly except my AM is actually pretty good. The LW is where mine falls down. The whip or external antennas make no difference to its poor reception. Weird
My power adaptor for the radio has a transformer pretty nice just like yours and adding extra single strength pretty odd but awesome 😀
A great portable. My first DX of Radio Alcaraván from Colombia was recorded using this cute receiver. Thanks for this review Pete
Your Welcome Marcos, maybe one day you will hear me transmitting on the SW :)
I will upload the recording 😊
cool post here to let me know when its live ;)
Thanks. I just bought one. Puts most in this price range to shame from what I have seen. Why would they ever discontinue such a great radio?
Eton still makes the Elite Executive, same radio: ua-cam.com/video/YXrTKxo7wtA/v-deo.html
Thanks....but the channels are empty !!!??..
Thanks!!
Elite Executive, my 880 was a rattle trap. That speaker shook the radio way to hard :)
@@todderbert Brilliant, thank you!
In comparison with the voice which is the best stalite or Bt edition
The speaker dominates on the BT, though voice sounds fine on the Satellit.
I want to buy one,but iam confused which shall I buy?Stalalite orBT edition, please help
What do you suggest stalalite or Sangean Ats 909x.
Thanks
@@faridelmasry5899 The Satellit because it is more portable.
Incidentally, I'm German and live in Germany, NOAA Weather does not exist here :-)
The thing is I couldn't buy it here in Germany. I don't know exactly if the Eton company has a subsidiary in Europe.
I am looking to buy and am in doubt between this radio or tecsun pl 660 ?? Can you please help me with your thoughts on this grundig?
The AM Sync feature is better on the 660. I enjoy using my Satellit more then the 660. This is my personal preference. Both are decent radios.
I returned my black one and got an Executive which has better MW.
I want to buy this Rado kindly send a set for me
I just got an Elite Executive. Now, I’m wondering if I need a Satellite too. LOL!
I’ll have to watch this video again and see what major differences there are between the 2
Should be identical.
i want one how i can get one
I have same radio but display is blue not amber & am is fine on mine,
Hi What type of modulation does it get for 27Mhz (CB) (usb/am/fm)?
@@pepe1 I listened to CB on 27.185 AM it was fine no distortion except channel 6 as they always sound dirty. The built in antenna picked up well.
I often wonder, If somewhere, Perhaps Overseas, There's Warehouses, with long forgotten Classic Radio's, From the 1950's to the 70's, Just waiting to be Re-Discovered---
happens now and again. Someone opens up an old warehouse, and boom...radios galore :)
I cannot find this radio anywhere where did you get yours?
eBay, when I made this video.
Great vid. How does this radio compare to the bigger brother, the Field?
It does very well until it comes to MW, the Fields beats it. The Satellit is much more portable, has AIR and SSB, and way more presets. FM is equal, the SW is about the same, though I have not tried an external antenna with the Field. Two different radios for sure.
It's basically a later generation of the G3, right?
correct.
Awesome review I like it.
What short wave bands does it have?
1.711-29.999MHz full coverage. ua-cam.com/video/XRqhok_fc9c/v-deo.html
Sending it back today. I love the radio, but that MW being faulty bugged me to no end.
@@todderbert did you get a replacement Satellit and did it improve on MW?
Does this radio receive the 10 meter band ?
Yes, from 1.711 to 29.999 MHz
@@todderbert I have this radio . I can enter in the frequency in AM mode but it does not have a decimal after the first two numbers. For example 27385 kHz. Is that the same as 27.385 kHz ?
@@EverydayJ1786 27,385kHz is 27.385 MHz.
How good is it on am? distance wise
800+ Miles on big broadcast stations transmitting 50KWs at night.
Another excellent video review.
Thank you Arnold.
Great review but I have to disagree on the AM I find mine is a very capable AM receiver, no complaints at all for a radio of this size, you must have a bad one.
I did have a bad one, bought an Elite Executive and the MW is fine now: ua-cam.com/video/YXrTKxo7wtA/v-deo.html
whatsv the battery life?
For Europe all of that is more-less past. Radio is digitalized over the DAB+ and SW MW LW dont have any radio station anymore. Noone broadcast over that waves. Only MW station which i can clearly catch in my part of world is Macedonian public radio 1 from Skopje on 810 khz..
Spain and Portugal still have AM stations on the air, as well as GB...
810 khz my favorite also
would you recommend this or the CC skywave SSB?
I would recommend this radio over the SSB if you can get a good example. My Black Satellit had a weak AM circuit and I returned it. I just ordered the Executive Satellit from Amazon, crazy good sale atm amzn.to/2ShaavQ . If this radio works on the AM band along with the others then the value of this radio is superior to the Skywave SSB. The Skywave SSB is your ultra compact radio, so if size is an issue, go with that one. My Black Satellit was so amazing on the Air, FM and SW bands.
Can a "Motorola M120" Convert to connect with Aircraft?
I would get this awsome radio however I would only get it if i could connect to my VHF UHF outdoor antenna via a 3.5mm sadly.. It has none..
I like your radio.
I impress your products .
Thank you Manish Dav

I want to buy this radio, but is it possible from india?
Todd, I’m really looking for a small portable to do some DXing and shortwave listening. Would this Eton do better than the PL 880?
I would go with the 880. It is easy to dial in the SSB, and the MW was better on it. If you need RDS and Airband then pick the Eton.
Thanks! Enjoy your videos!
I wish they would add VHF and UHF Bands
where can i get it in Cairo?
What is satellite radio? I have favorite radio station in my city, but now I have moved 800 miles away to another city, is this type of radio can catch the transmission of my favorite radio station 800 miles away?...
If it is a MW frequency it might. The name Satellit is a brand, does not have a dish to pick up satellite transmissions.

Because it is older. If I find a good deal on one, then I will review it.
How to listen nearest police radio calls
A cheap Baofeng radio, or Bearcat scanner. If your local police went Digital you will have to spend more. In my area, I use a $15 Quansheng HT that I picked up in Nov 2018 and it works like a charm. Most of my local FD an PDs still use analog.
Thanks
I bought an Eton elite 750 satellite last Christmas and it didn't last a week before it started cutting in and out, Also the tuning knob wobbles just like all satellite from Grundig and Tecsun. The BFO knob is also way too hard to turn. Eton customer service is abysmal and has had my radio going on three months and still hasn't even looked at it they just told me.... Steer clear of them folks because if you get a lemon like I did their warranty department is out to lunch. A BIG thumbs down!
