That scene in the book is truly heartbreaking where after a normal conversation with the old blind man, he hears the family returning and starts panicking, then desperately and tearfully begs the old blind man to not fear or reject him. It showed how the creature just wanted to be loved and accepted by the family he's been listening to for over a year.

Janet Altamirano There were at least two versions written by Shelley, one in 1818 and one in 1831 (one major difference is that Elizabeth isn't a cousin in the 1831 version, but adopted from a peasant family). As a woman, if I were resurrected in order to be married to him, I'd be afraid he'd kill me if I didn't behave the way he wanted me to. Domestic violence is not to be taken lightly, and this creature reeks of it. If he were put on trial and jailed for his crimes, however, I'd certainly want to visit him in jail and keep him from being lonely.
*somewhat homicidal* i love that! i do think though that he only killed out of desperation so just an overall ugly as shit desperate sweet cuddly bunny rabbit
A good, succinct summary. I think there's an error, though. According to the video, there's a time discrepancy regarding when William dies, between Victor's story and the creature's (5:29). However, in the book, Victor says that William died NOT the spring after he made the creature, but the following spring, roughly 18 months after he made the creature (end Chapter 6, beginning Chapter 7). Their stories do line up.
I think Victor Frankenstein was the one at fault. I don't think he created the monster for no reason, but I do think he should've taken responsibility for his creation, and should've tried to help it.
Whatever he is, he'd be a perfect role for Arnold Schwarzenegger. If only the creation wasn't so big! So what do we do? Dwarves, of course! Normal-sized people would be played by dwarbes!
Loved this book. It's about morality and choice; and how, since man can choose to be evil or good, we are essentially neither. Meaning, when someone says people are essentially good, because we can choose to be evil, then what they say is wrong, and no morality is essential to us, that is, not within our essences.
Inconsistencies in the story? More like inconsistencies in this summary. The creature saw William at first and wanted to have him understand him because he thought that people of such young age couldn't hold prejudice like the other humans he encountered. It was when William said my father Frankenstein will kill you after being frightened that the creature strangled the little boy. Background information is ignored as well as Ernest's presence in the novel. Other small things like this are amiss in this summary and also, the stories match. Seriously, read the book.

Then watch this video twice. 0:00 Then watch the minute book report video 5 times without break, then you have whatever you needed to know in your memory but only have to use 20 mins of your time. This worked for me. You’re welcome
depends on which edition of the book you might have read. In the 1818 edition, Elizabeth was his cousin, who was taken in by the Frankesteins and raised as one of their own. She was adopted in the 1831 ed.
wish i could just give "the monster" a big ol hug!! hahaha but guys read the book its 10000000 times better than watching a short summary! its a brilliant book!
Y’all who didn’t read this book for your assignment, you should read it some time. There are some great lines delivered by the monster, and some insights that aren’t covered in summaries. That and it’s a cool book and takes like, a week, tops, to read
I don't know if anyone's commented this yet, but there is no difference in time between the creature's story and Victor's. Victor stays in Ingolstadt for another year with Henry Clerval after his recovery. They were studying the Oriental languages together, if you recall. The narration passes very briefly over this time, so the creator of this video may well have overlooked it, but you'll find its existence in the fifth paragraph from the end of Chapter 6. Good luck to everyone studying this book for a school assignment! :)
This is such a fascinating story that can spark a lot of intelligent a provocative conversations about the themes and characters... And my English teacher just wanted us to study the vocabulary words... :(
I never thought of the creature as evil. He wasn't given any of the fruits of his labors and instead was beaten time and time again. He came to terms with his wicked deeds and acknowledged them as such. Once Frankenstein had dashed his hope and vengeance was sworn though, he couldn't return to his old countenance. He had given himself an ambition and binding a resolve to that ambition pushed him onward. He fell down a pit of despair of which he couldn't escape and sought only to dwell on the emotions which he so ardently needed to distract him from his grief and "wretchedness" At least this are my two cents.

You will be happy to know that I used your video as an educational lesson for my 6th grade grandson. He found the story of Frankenstein interesting because of the many "life's lessons" that it teaches. Thanks for posting this helpful video.
All my life I was taught Frankenstein was a horror story, but now that I understand it, I now know that it's about judging people based on their appearance, accepting difference, and a quest of revenge
Victor still has his brother Ernest, and there's also an inconsistency with the De Laceys; Felix fell in love with Safie and the Turk promised Felix that Safie would marry him. But the Turk went back on his promise since he didn't want his daughter to marry a Christian. These points aren't critical to the story, but it may help someone who's here for an essay or report. Other than that, you managed to hit a lot of the critical points. Great job! 7:43 He never said he was going to set himself on fire, just that he was going to go end his life because he didn't want to feel pain and anguish anymore.
I am actually here because our teacher gave us four days to read this book but being in junior highschool and all the teachers giving hefty notes which you have to do didn't give me time to finish it at all. I have only read about half of it and tomorrow we are having a discussion on this book. I really wanted to finish it by reading since it is very interesting tale.I guess I will read it later.
Thank you for the nice video.. There's a small note, victor didn't lose everyone.. he still have a brother named Ernest which you completely forget to tell about him
One of the saddest book I've read. Really heartbreaking. I feel more sorry for the being, and not Victor. I imagine what could he become if Victor didn't abandon him. He only longs for someone to accept and loved him.
5:08 the monster isn't shot for saving a drowning woman. Even though he saved the woman, when the man and woman see the monster they run. The monster then runs after them, then he is shot.
Somthing doesn't add up in the original story victor frankenstein had two younger younger brothers William and Ernest while in this story only William is mentioned of course we know what happened to him but Ernest fate is unknown its possible he was sent and taken away where the monster wouldn't kill him and he was the last surviving member of the Frankenstein family
Brian Phelan I think it is mentioned in the book that Earnest dies of the same disease that his mother died of while Victor is at University, before he even starts creation of the creature
Never heared of that I've read the original version Frankenstein and there was no telling he had twin brother and that must be a anther version of the book
Doesn't seem possible that Ernest died of his mothers illness because in the book when Victor learns about Williams death when he comes home the first person he sees is Ernest and they sob together until the rest of family comes to greet Victor
I'm just gonna let you know they leave out some important background information... So don't rely on this, but watch it before you read the book it helps.
3:20 I personally thought that Felix would have taught her French and it is what Frankenstein's creature also learns. He might have talked to Victor in French and Victor is telling it's English translation to Walton.
There's no inconsistency; Frankenstein studied oriental culture at Ingolstadt with Henry Clerval after the Winter during which he was sick. He heard about William's death in the Winter after that.
I don't care if you're watching this for some exam because you couldn't be bothered to do your homework. This is a very important novel and story, far more interesting than the green-skinned, plugs in the neck, modern version of the Frankenstein's Monster. It's also arguably the very first science fiction novel (or first significant one). I find it unfortunate if you can't appreciate the book itself, even if you don't really find the story itself entertaining.
There were two versions of Frankenstein, each version having slightly different details than the other. One version said Elizabeth was a cousin, while the other said she was adopted.
Cousin was not just a word used to donote familial connection, it was also a term used to imply closeness and affection. In much the same way as some cultures call non relatives who are elders 'mother', 'father' or 'auntie'.
book. Those in junior high & high school these days are lucky to have UA-cam to help "aid" in their comprehension of assigned books & readings. But honestly reading the whole book is the best solution. Anyways, Video SparkNotes has a nice channel.
Is it just me or does the creature actually seem like a figment of his creator's imagination? From a psychoanalytical point of view, it is very much possible and also explains all the inconsistencies within the book. If closely read, Victor and his monster are always together(or in close proximity) and there is always a binary at function between the two characters.
5:15 no he wishes to raise the boy, as he thought the boy might be free of prejudice. Though his search for companionship was cut off by the boys cries and threats. I may not only be 16 but my memory isn't bad enough to let this detail slip. Though I harbor no prejudice towards you as I know not anything about you, so take this not as an attack upon you.
Several things: Victor's slead only had one dog left alive when he arrives at the ship, Elizabeth is reffered to as Victor's "cousin" although really she is his adopted sister, and Ernest was another of Victor's younger brothers (the only remaining Frankenstien at the end of the story).
I disagree, I know a lot had to be left out to keep this short, but some of this is wrong. The Creation loves by natures, its through the actions of other characters that teach him how to hate. First being abandoned by his creator, the one human who could love him, then being rejected by the man in the cottage and the villagers, then seeing the love in the DeLacey family. After he becomes jealous and wants to gain their affection, Felix beats him and convinces the Creation that there is no hope for him and to hate the world; that he is a Creation of a god, yet he identifies as being one of Lucifer, not like Adam and God. Again he saves the girl and is punished for his goodness, and tries to convince the little boy to be on his side, because he believes his naiive nature will not judge the Creation for his looks. The Creation is wrong, and when the boy screams to put him down and his father's name, the Creation kills him in a rage. Even later he tries to reason with Victor, but is rejected again, and decides to kill to get his revenge. But at the end of the story, we see that the Creation is truly more human and heroic than his creator because he explains to Walton how he did not kill without having to suffer greatly himself; that the screams of Clerval and the other innocent victims of his were not music to his ears but hurt him with a pain that not even Frankenstein experienced. BTW, that was all my writing, I have an exam on this tomorrow so I figured it'd be good practice and helpful to anyone who didn't read the book:)
I do not believe the monster killed the child in a fit off rage but rather by complete mistake the book said that the monster only wanted him to stop degrading him. in the heat of it all he knew not of his strength and gripped tighter out of emotional distress as many cletch their fists. I don't know haha but that's my opinion I hope someone can elaborate on this event!!! yes he celebrated after the fact but I don't think he meant to kill him apon the first mention of frankensteins name. just my opinion!!!
+emanuel emanuel I agree, the book says: "The child still struggled and loaded me with epithets which carried despair to my heart; I grasped his throat to silence him, and in a moment he lay dead at my feet." This would suggest that he was so hurt/annoyed by the child's words that he tried to keep him from talking, and not knowing his own strength, choked him.
I just finished reading the book and you left out the part where Victor has another, and more sickly, younger brother named Ernest. Strangely enough, it's like the author herself completely forgets about Ernest after Victor returns home with the ill news of Elizabeth's death and we never find out what happens to him afterwards. 🤔
Yea I would recommend you guys read the actual story first and then watch this video. I did it this way and it wraps up my experience in a very satisfying way. ^^

I see Frankenstein's monster as a child here. He barely learned good and evil and is still grappling with the concepts of right and wrong while being shunned by everyone. But I also think he had an emotional journey growing up basically, realizing what he did was purely evil and says he'll destroy himself sparing someone else the misery of finding out about him.
@@granthodgkiss he killed a child after all this. After he got dumped and mistreated. It's literally a story of someone similar to a child just being troubled his entire life and doing what no one told him was bad

*somewhat homicidal*
i love that! i do think though that he only killed out of desperation so just an overall ugly as shit desperate sweet cuddly bunny rabbit
I was about to say the same thing!
They also never mention Ernest. Victor's brother in the army.

I think Victor Frankenstein was the one at fault. I don't think he created the monster for no reason, but I do think he should've taken responsibility for his creation, and should've tried to help it.
he created the monster because he was very curious, and want to defeat dead.
well curiosity killed the cat
...and satisfaction brought it back
And satisfaction is notably lacking in this book
@@zethcool He created the creature because he thought he could become a god by defeating death
he's not a monster, he's a creature :)
angelANDpeace ....well played
He's not a creature, he's a "daemon"
true
He murdered several people
Whatever he is, he'd be a perfect role for Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Since the 'monster' is never named, I call him Frank Jr.

Late asf but he killed William when he was trying to stop him from yelling, he just wanted to silence him
It´s a 8 minute summary, the essence of the book, not an hour long video mentioning every damn detail. Seriously, watch the video.
Anyone who has to do an essay etc, what you do is watch minute book report’s 2 minute video on Frankenstein.
Then watch this video twice. 0:00
Then watch the minute book report video 5 times without break, then you have whatever you needed to know in your memory but only have to use 20 mins of your time. This worked for me.
You’re welcome
Thanks ❤❤
depends on which edition of the book you might have read. In the 1818 edition, Elizabeth was his cousin, who was taken in by the Frankesteins and raised as one of their own. She was adopted in the 1831 ed.
Why were there two versions so closely made to eachother?
wish i could just give "the monster" a big ol hug!! hahaha

oh that's an oof
oh, that's an oof
The middle children are always forgotten... Poor Ernest
He fell down a pit of despair of which he couldn't escape and sought only to dwell on the emotions which he so ardently needed to distract him from his grief and "wretchedness"
At least this are my two cents.
Everyone forgets about Earnest. Even the author and Victor forgot about him!
Ik 😔
wow this video is like super old. I was 6 years young when this was made and now 12 years later I'm watching it because of an exam I have. Crazy.
Same... Got my final exams tomorrow...
The monster looks quite trendy in this video, like he could be in Kasabian

This is the 1st time I visited VideoSparkNotes. Most books featured on this VideoSparkNotes channel were assigned books I read in junior high & high school. I would highly recommend this book! Try reading it sometime after the class is done
You will be happy to know that I used your video as an educational lesson for my 6th grade grandson. He found the story of Frankenstein interesting because of the many "life's lessons" that it teaches. Thanks for posting this helpful video.
This is a good book I read it in 8 minutes, thanks sparknotes, now onto the essay.
props to the wonderful artwork shown to depict each scene
Deeper and Profound story with Richest Themes. Definitely one of my Favorites Stories.
You sure have saved a lot of desperate and exhausted students. Thank you very much Sir.
All my life I was taught Frankenstein was a horror story, but now that I understand it, I now know that it's about judging people based on their appearance, accepting difference, and a quest of revenge

Oh my gosh this book was amazing and terribly sad
Yes I know!!!
I just finished Frankenstein today and never really understood the 3 letters, now it makes sense. Thanks Sparknotes
Wait... what about Ernest? Why did they leave him out of this whole thing?
haha i know right i was thinking the same thing
Let's be honest, Mary Shelley practically omitted Ernest himself.
Poor guy 😔
I am actually here because our teacher gave us four days to read this book but being in junior highschool and all the teachers giving hefty notes which you have to do didn't give me time to finish it at all. I have only read about half of it and tomorrow we are having a discussion on this book. I really wanted to finish it by reading since it is very interesting tale.I guess I will read it later.
i love this channel and the website that follows it helps me understand the book more clearly
I scrolled down to read some comments as the video started, then scrolled back up and missed the whole part where he created the monster lol.
This is really good! Thank you, now I understand the novel much better than before
Thanks for summerizing the whole book! You just saved me 3 hrs of my life, and a test with it tmr!
Thank you for the nice video.. There's a small note, victor didn't lose everyone.. he still have a brother named Ernest which you completely forget to tell about him

I loved this book, it totally wasn't what I expected!
One of the saddest book I've read. Really heartbreaking. I feel more sorry for the being, and not Victor. I imagine what could he become if Victor didn't abandon him. He only longs for someone to accept and loved him.

So how exactly did Victor bring the Monster to life in the story?
***** thanks for the info. I'm definitely going to check it out.
The effort i put into my schoolwork has reached an all time low.
Friendly reminder that Victor was still a teenager, and probably mentally ill when he was going about his project
nuh uh
"Don't leave, I was going to make espresso!"
The illustrations are really good.
I love how Ernest isn't even mentioned
I know right? This should be a tragedy about him too, since noone cares to mention him or refer to him after like the prologue :D.
Who's Ernest?
Victor's brother who goes to the army if I'm not mistaken
the stories match! he stayed with henry and studied all summer, then went home the NEXT spring
elisabeth wasnt his cousin lmao she was adopted
There were two versions of Frankenstein, each version having slightly different details than the other. One version said Elizabeth was a cousin, while the other said she was adopted.
Cousin was not just a word used to donote familial connection, it was also a term used to imply closeness and affection. In much the same way as some cultures call non relatives who are elders 'mother', 'father' or 'auntie'.
We have an Exam tomorrow about what from her real life inspired her to write the book so this really helped!
I love the illustrations wish you would make a short film.
How do you explain the deaths?
What if the whole story of Frankenstein is a excuse for Walton to return home without being ashamed?
5:15 no he wishes to raise the boy, as he thought the boy might be free of prejudice.
Though his search for companionship was cut off by the boys cries and threats.
I may not only be 16 but my memory isn't bad enough to let this detail slip. Though I harbor no prejudice towards you as I know not anything about you, so take this not as an attack upon you.
Exam tomorrow, wish me luck
3 years late
Zenen Treadwell how did you do
Several things: Victor's slead only had one dog left alive when he arrives at the ship, Elizabeth is reffered to as Victor's "cousin" although really she is his adopted sister, and Ernest was another of Victor's younger brothers (the only remaining Frankenstien at the end of the story).
The first science fiction novel. And Mary Shelley was only 18 when she wrote it. That would have made Mary Shelley the first nerd queen.
How does walton send the letters to his sister, while he's in the artic with no way to post the letter?
Why is this summary way better than the book? I actually want to read it now.
Am I the only one who does not have a report or a test on it and is simply seeing this for amusement?
He killed the maid for fun though. Plus kids would do that with almost anyone, but I guess I get the rest of the killings.
+emanuel emanuel I agree, the book says: "The child still struggled and loaded me with epithets
which carried despair to my heart; I grasped his throat to silence him, and in a moment he lay dead at my feet."
This would suggest that he was so hurt/annoyed by the child's words that he tried to keep him from talking, and not knowing his own strength, choked him.

Just the way victor left the monster angry and alone in this world. The monster took everyone from victor, leaving him angry and alone as well. Wow.

Sad story 🥺 Thanks for sharing. Very brief, easy to understand and good animation. I enjoy it.
