Heres the thing, if you look at these characters in the first episodes, vs the ending ones, you realize, that they are the same age yet they were forced to mature so fast to save their world because of their parent's mistakes. On another note two under-appreciated characters are Uncle Iroh, who is INCREDIBLY powerful, and Toph, who is insanely talented for her age. I wish we got more of her as a young adult.
Toph is even more amazing when you think about the fact that she came from a life of wealth and comfort (even if it was stifling) to the front lines of a war. She never once hesitated or looked back on what could have been. The others had all been in the war in some way for awhile... and I believe she is the youngest of the whole group.

He was a wounded little kid. He really did great given his circumstances. This much maturity comes very slow and painfully. What he had done was a splendid work. So it took longer than needed to be.
