  • A few videos back I listed 5 cameras that I wish I would have kept. Today we take a look at the other end of the spectrum. What cameras do I regret buying in the first place?
Needless to say, this doesn't mean these are bad cameras. As you know I believe there are no bad cameras, only bad photographers. It just means that they didn't work well enough for me compared to other cameras I have tried.

I had a bad 2021 lost my dad, my old boss pushed me to a burnout ( i teached film photography and museum conservator)my boss kept cutting the teaching time till it was down to 20 min, his idea was to maximize the number of students we received in a day at the cost of quality, the lack of knowledge in photography shows in his expectations. Whilst i lament Ive loved photography all my life but been doing photography itself since i was 16 for the first time 2021 took all joy and interest in photography from me . For almost a year i have not done photography, but recently a spark of joy and enthusiasm came back also with a different mentality now i want to do street photography/ documentary photography exclusively and use only compact cameras film or digital I purchased the ricoh griii street edition. I want 2022 to be a good year and like you mattias I’m also a dad of 3 beautiful baby boy’s . I don’t want 2021 to keep me from taking photos of my sons as they grow up .

recovering from depression and burnout is so hard! especially when it takes away the things you love doing, which is a vicious cycle. photography was lost to me for several years due to illness and stress, so i know how it feels. if i could go back and tell myself one thing, it’s simply to drop all expectations - which are poison for recovery! don’t worry about taking “good” photographs, just enjoy the process and good photographs will come. wishing you many fun hours with it 💜

The camera I shouldn't have bought is the FujiFilm x100f. I just didn't fall in love with the body like I expected too, and it felt a bit slow. I also felt like I needed to step down to get better image quality.
I replaced it with a Ricoh GRiii, which is the camera I should have bought in the first place.

My second Fuji was the X-T10, and I was blown away by the image quality. Love that it has a viewfinder, and is compact. Won the auction at an online thrift shop, got it and the 27mm lens for around $350, what a steal. It was and is in mint condition. Bought some adapters so now I can shoot with a Super Takumar 50mm F1.4, manual focus, no softness at f2.8, and just amazed at the colors and contrast. My favorite fun camera.

Mattias, as always many thanks for a great video. The one piece of gear I really regret buying is the Lensbaby. I could never seem to get it work as the promotional videos did. It was a lot of effort for not much reward, but, then again there may been a problem with the lack of ability on the part of the operator.

I consider myself fortunate to this point inasmuch as I haven’t yet regretted a camera I’ve bought. Never regretted any camera purchase, each one thought me something about myself and my needs as photographer. Among these there are two I had love-hate relationship - Leica M240 and Fuji X100V. So far the camera I like the most is Fuji Xpro-3. I take it everywhere and love using it.

    • @rlysakowski
      @rlysakowski 2 роки тому

@@markn8535 I bought it to replace x100f - flippy screen was the main reason and my expectations were sort of pumped. Flippy screen turned out to be difficult to open (especially in gloves) and seemed to be fragile. I hated how the lens aperture ring was done - pretty unusable for me, too close to the body and again - hard to operate in gloves. Quite often I would press something without knowing and got surprises. Other than that very solid camera, I used it with TCL and WCLX adapters to see how far I can take it. Don’t get me wrong, I sometimes miss it as it’s beautiful thing but I have much more sentiment towards x100f. X100V became a ‘German car’ - solid, reliable but boring.

    • @macjim
      @macjim Рік тому +1

I bought the X100v as a replacement for my X-T1, partly because of the sensor and autofocus improvements over my old camera (I couldn’t afford an X-T4 body as I needed to sell the X-T1 & lenses to get the trade-in money), I never even considered the pull out rear screen in my assessment of the camera.
I wanted a faster and more accurate autofocus and the faster processor too… the look of the camera was a secondary thought for me… I preferred the silver model as it looked so beautiful but bought the black model for my street work.
Have I used the flip out screen as it’s intended to be used… yes, on the odd occasions I helped but mostly it’s left flush to the body.
I now own both the X100v and the GRIIIX, and use them for street work (I also use an iPhone 13 Pro too)and enjoy both… I’ve owned, since 2012, Leica’s, Fujifilm, Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony and Kodak cameras but have settled on the two above… what would my ideal camera be: one of the Sony DSLR’s for the great autofocus and image quality (hate, hate, hate Sony’s menu settings!).
If money was no object: the Leica Q2 or 3 when it comes out (I can dream).
But I’m very happy with these cameras faults and all.

Proud to say that I accidentally follow your 2 camera rule, but I often think about trying a new camera. Then I realize that I just haven’t used my K-1 in a long time and I should just suck it up, plan a day out and bring my camera bag with me. If the K-1 doesn’t perform then, that’s when I can start looking at a different camera.
Anyhow, thanks for all your earnest thoughts on cameras, Mattias!

Great video! I like hearing the reasons why you and the kit didn't get along because too often people pass over important things like ergonomics and handling in favor of raw sensor power. Shame about the GRIIIx, was looking to get one myself in the future. I'm currently shooting on K-1, K-3 II and Pentax Q and thought that would be a perfect in-between for the Q and K-3.

Fantastic video! We bought two of the Panasonic S1 and accompanying lenses: 50mm f1.4, 24-105 f4, 70-200 f2.8; everything we need for a full day of event/wedding coverage.
The continuous autofocus let us down over and over that we had to figure out how to make those out of focus shots a part of the edit, it stretched our creativity.
The other issue with that system, it wasn’t so lightweight. They were hefty cameras and bulky lenses. We bought it for unlimited recording, good heat dissipation, excellent stabilization, all the stuff Panasonic does well. But alas we sold it all and are on the Canon R5 and R6 now with zero regrets.

My number one favourite camera, to date is also my number one regret camera: The Fuji X pro 1.
I bought it in 2019 for some of the more obvious reasons - it was $300 CAD and was a rangefinder -style camera. The good was the image quality. Still some of the best photos I think I have ever taken. High ISOs sing with true colour representation at its top 25,600.
My main complaints were with the lack of actual manual focus capabilities with native fuji lenses - especially the pancake primes with terribly unpredictable focus by wire. This meant autofocus only, which in my mind defeated the purpose of the camera. Along with the OVF not having any useable way to check focus in manual, it was disappointing.
The cake topper, though, was the battery life. I would usually get about 30 mins of use with one new battery, even after a few charge cycles. For the price, I even bought a second one to make sure mine wasnt faulty. It was then that I asked a few fuji shooters online and found that it truly was that bad.
So a rangefinder style gimmick with poor battery life and amazing image quality. Oh well.

I regret getting my modified camera from KolariVision. Hear me out on this. In order to see whether or not I'd like such styles of photography (turns out I do!), I went with the least expensive setup, which wound up costing me somewhere around $500 CAD all in, and it was a modified Canon ELPH 180 or 185. The thing is a royal pain to hold due to just how thin it is, the battery kills itself in about an hour of being on, and while it definitely helped me decide if I wanted to get into such or not it left me asking why I didn't just pay twice as much and get a Lumix GX8 or GX9, or at minimum a somewhat better point and shoot.

My "wish i'd skipped" was the Fujifilm X-T4. I thought I'd like the IBIS and the rest would be fine. But the twisty-flippy screen and plastic-y feel of the camera didn't hit it for me. Every time I used it, I couldn't get over the lackluster feel I got while using it. Nothing really wrong with the camera, it's a fantastic camera. Just that for me, I wound up going back to my older nikon.
My "wish I'd kept" was my Fujifilm x100f. Love the color science and ease of use. I didn't want the x100V model because I prefer having the tactile buttons on the back, not touchscreen. I sold it to a friend to help get them deeper into photography because I had just bought the X-T4...

I wish I'd skipped the X-T4, too. Due to the pandemic I didn't get to try it in the hand. It was much bigger than my well-loved X-T2, and yeah I hated the flippy screen. I had the X100F until a dial broke and really did love the X100V - got used to the lack of buttons on the back (just) - and took some of my favourite ever photos. I ended up with the XT-30II and do love it.

The Fujifilm X100F. It's a fine camera, but in my inexperience at the time I entirely misjudged it for its use case. I take a lot of photos near water, and the fixed focal length turned out to be super limiting as 'zooming with your feet' often wasn't possible without taking a dive. I managed to trade it in, and buy another interchangeable lens camera during a promotion and thereby limited the financial loss. The price of learning I guess... I still like the X100-series, but it's just not for me.

I'm a dad of 2 young children and I've shot most of my pictures with my xpro 2 (I was coming from a Sony a6000). Since I buy everything used i lost nothing when switching systems. I later purchased an X-H1 for a bit of video and to use with larger lenses but I must admit that even if It's better than my xpro2 in almost every way, I always grab my xpro2 to shoot. Can't explain it, maybe It's the size, or the form factor, but the X-H1 never makes me want to go out and shoot as my xpro2 does. Lately I've been tempted to find an x-e4 with the 27mm because the xpro 2 remains bulky, even with a 23mm f2. And with all the stuff I carry with two young children, I tend to leave the camera at home if it doesnt fit in a pocket... I also have a 5D classic that I bought for fun after watching one of your videos and because it was cheap (90€ from someone living 10min away from my place...), but it struggles to keep up with the kids, and I quite limited for cropping with 12Mpx

As an professional photographer and X-H1 owner, I totally agree with your criticisms of the camera. While it's market position was built around being a hybrid, the X-H1 is an absolutely horrid hybrid experience. When I approach a job with these boxes, it's either or. Switching between the two systems is just too inconvenient.
So why do I own two of them? Well at after the release of the X-T3, X-H1 bodies could be purchased for $700-$1000 off brand new plus accessories. Sometimes it really is about price. It was the perfect upgrade from the X-T20 I was using and I personally do love the huge grip. It's very comfortable for me.

The Leica M8 was pure torture. I had it and the XPro3 at the same time because I though they would compliment each other but it just felt like I had a $1500 ticking time bomb with the M8. The shutter sound, the buffer, the dead pixles, the purple blacks and of course the crop (I love a true 50mm). But I took some really great photos with it in that short time and felt there was something to RF shooting. So I went all in and traded the Xpro3 for an M240, and picked up a used X-T2 to keep hybrid shooting around. It's been wonderful (I still miss the M8's finish though).

Before I gave up on (non-iPhone) photography years ago, I bought a series of DSLRs and then m43 cameras that were “good” - and the DSLRs were too heavy and no fun to use and m43 just not quality enough, the effort felt wasted. I got caught up in DPReview BS and it ruined the fun for me.
I’m SO glad I found you and other creators who focus on enjoyment first, and image quality second, and specs never! I wish I’d known about the Ricoh GRDs and Pentax Q back then!
The only recent camera I wish I hadn’t bought was the Sigma SD Quattro… that sensor seems like the worst of all worlds, and the images I got with the kit lens were very bizarre with a jarring sense of overlapping images, almost like old red and blue “3D” images. But it had such good ergonomics and build quality, got me looking into other foveon cameras and that was a great thing!

As such, I was contemplating the GR IIIx too, as a replacement for iPhone photos, so I was surprised it made this list for you. My main camera right now is a Fuji X-T3 coupled with either the 18-55 or 56mm 1.2. Do you have another recommendation for casual everyday baby photos if not the GR IIIx? I know I won’t bring the X-T3 with me everywhere but I’d still like the ability to capture good snapshots of the little one.

I went for the D850 secobd hand, just because it fits so well into tge hand and just feels great. The Z7 just felt too small with the pinky dangling about somewhere.

The pictures that you took with the Ricoh GR IIIx were beautiful. Sharp, perfect contrast and deep, natural colors. I myself, sincerely regret buying the Panasonic LX100 years ago. The photos were very sharp and I liked the colors but the sensor immediately became covered with dust and was rendered useless. Now, I will have to disassemble the body to clean the sensor and that will take me hours. I will never again buy a camera that doesn't have a removeable lens so I can easily access the sensor. Thanks for your reviews.

As an RX100 vii owner, I love this thing. I mainly use it as a secondary camera along side my mirrorless that's paired with a fast prime when I travel. Instead of carrying mutliple lenses for my mirrorless, I just have the RX100vii. I mostly use it for longer focal lengths to save me from buying/lugging around a 70-200. Lowlight performance is pretty bad though. I wouldn't want it as my only camera, but it would fill that role in a pinch.

Hej Mattias! Ricoh GR is one I still have, but sure it has its flaws, like sucking up dust when you turn on the camera as the lens moves forward, depositing the dust on the sensor (eventually fixed with the GR III). The dust enters via the exposure compensation button (totally redesigned on later models).
The Nikon D3200 had very dull colors, while its successor the D3300 switched to a much better sensor, and overall much better pricewise (I paid full price for the D3200, and then Nikon themselves sold off the D3300 for €350)! So the D3200 was a bad investment, the D3300 still soldiers on.
Olympus C-8080 had a lot going for it, but was a total failure if you tried backlighting (motljus as we call it). It goes to history for its RAW shooting speed, today there are cameras taking 60 RAWs per second, the C-8080 takes three per minute! Lovely for closeups, though and when used with a flash it is just perfect. The camera's sale failure almost killed Olympus, but mine still works. The best single-hand camera there is, as long as you have a right hand, that is. But avoid RAW!
Pentax K-5, the top model at the time had almost everything going for it, but the AF was terrible, and then the card reader failed on mine. Got a new K-5 from Pentax for free, but sold it ASAP and all my other Pentax gear at the same time (I kept my very first Pentax and a Limited lens!).
The Nikon 1 range has failure-prone lenses (the obvious reason for Nikon to close down the N1 range and scrapping the DL range, just after its presentation to the press and invited guests, as it used the same lens mechanics). But as a replacement to TCs for Nikon owners they are pretty impressive, like a 2.7x TC with no loss of light, with 20.4MP (using the same sensor as in the RX100 and its siblings). It sure works for me!
A few Nikon 1 lenses use metal gears in their aperture mechanism, so are totally problem free: 10-30 PD, 6.7-13, and the superb 70-300 CX, the best 70-300 there is for any format!
I have a D600 and a D7500 that was worked flawlessly for years!

I had a quite similar A7II problem recently. I had the A7 for my vintage (mostly Konica) lenses and thought that IBIS would be nice to have so I bought a used A7II but I don´t like the look and feel of it. For me the A7 is a much better match with the old lenses, with the metal dials, the small grip and the glossy black finish it is a little vintage itself. I´m happy I didn´t sell it yet, it is definitely the keeper.

Well after having the a6000 then an X-E3 I wanted some kind of upgrade, good hybrid camera. I was very close of getting an X-h1 seemed like the perfect, choice but I had some chance of trying out with my vintage lenses and it was horrible to hold in my hand: because of the awful grip, it felt more heavy, and big also the back lcd is a letdown. Then I jumped on an A7s to use mostly with my vintage lenses. It is fun that I can use some lens that only fits on full frame mirrorless (like my Jupiter-12 - 35mm), but the grip is too small, and the color science and auto WB is just awful. It is MUCH worse than my a6000, which still puzzles me. BUT I just started trying DXO Photolab for my raw editing and I am blown away like I NEVER was when it comes to photo editing software. It is like magic: the AI noise reduction is phenomenal and the ability to use loads of inbuilt and other camera color profiles is a sweet bonus that seems like finally I can make the even the Sony raw-s look stunning. This software will determine what bodies I keep or sell from now on. It is that good. :)

Do not forget the X-E3 and after were specified down on controls. best to stick with the X-E1/2. The LX100 II is probably the last of a line of just about affordable well specified cameras just hanging on and the beleaguered camera industry as a whole has had to either heavily trim their sails or ramp up prices and focus on high margin kit. I steer clear of expensive fixed lens cameras myself as they have no dust mitigation apart from the Ricoh GR III with its shaker which shows it can be done. Of course a little replaceable sticky hatch in the base of the camera would not be too difficult to give the dust somewhere to hide and eventually exit the camera. As a gearhead myself the idea of a mere 5 cameras I regret buying would be nice. if the camera buying community were rational, sensible and consistent in buying kit the industry would disappear overnight.

I come from a different perspective as I have never sold any of my gear (lenses or bodies). I have seen a change in my use case over time. Going from a Canon 550D DSLR and Lumix GX1 to a Sony a6000, then full in on M43 with a G9, GX85, and G95. I have almost completely stopped using the 550D and a6000, while I still use all of my M43 cameras in some way or another. My GX85 and G95 are my main family cameras. The G9 and fast glass comes out for weddings and events along with the G95, and my GX1 comes out when I need B cam video and the other cameras are in use, or on the rare occasion that I feel nostalgic. I don't really regret buying any of them. I did buy a DSC-QX10 that never really worked right and the lack of raw capture really killed the utility of it so maybe that was a regret.

I think this also depends if you are good with the 28mm focal length though as far as the Leica Q is concerned...I recently sold my Fuji XT2 for a canon 5D classic and loving it!

@@codyallen3729 I don't think I'd have a problem at all. I can (and have) lived with only a 35mm FL, and the 28 isn't too far away. I've always liked wide, and I cannot for the life of me get on with a 50mm. The 28mm 1.7 with macro sounds like an absolute game changer. Maybe I'll test drive a GR2 first though. Thanks for the response.

@@klaushuxley3342 ya try the Ricoh. Or even try the fuji x70 or xf10. They're essentially way more pocketable xf100's. The x70 being a little bigger and having the older sensor and a flip up screen. Personally I own the xf10 and I tend to have it on my the most as an edc, due to its size and output. It also punches well above its weight class. Very similar to the x100 line, if not just as good or better even. And the xf10 easily slips in any pocket. Also it has a 28mm 2.8 lens same as the Ricohs, which for street and most scenarios, is perfect. And then if you find that you don't love the 28 and prefer the 35mm focal length, then just go back and grab you a x100 again

Sony battery technology really needs to improve. I love their RX100 line and the ZV-1 and I own an A7II - which are all great, but the battery life hinders full enjoyment of the devices. The ZV-1 bugs me because I cannot access the SD slot unless I take it off of the shoe mount. Great video and you have a great voice for narration!

As an owner of the RX-100 5A I could not agree more. I have basically stopped using it for stills, I only grab short video clips when I see something I like. It's in a weird spot for me: the body is very small, yet surprisingly unexpectedly unwieldy. The grip is tenuous and feels very vulnerable to damage, but the body is very bulky and dense for the size. Even though it has a lot of features, it seems just slow enough to boot up and be ready that I miss opportunities to grab a clip or shot which would be better to use my phone for, but at the same time the phone quality doesn't match up for me. Treating it like a DSLR on a trip gives me the best results: have a power bank /spare batteries in your pocket, go on a shoot where you are prepared with it always ready in your hand. It is very richly featured but just limited in certain ways enough that you only end up using this camera if your needs are exactly in the range where this camera's features and limitations fall exactly in line.

So far, I think I can't say I really regret buying any cameras, even if I lost quite some money buying several I didn't enjoy as much as I thought I will...
The main reason is : it's because I bought them, that I have the camera I enjoy so much now. They are all part of the process of finding something enjoyable to shoot with and are a plain part of my photography journey. And they make me realize that there is no need for the greatest, latest fully featured camera. At least, it's no necessarily the best one for you and in your heart.
The best example is my favorite camera so far : my actual Sigma fp. The only camera I ever rented, not quite enjoyed at first, and finally fell in love and bought it few months later. Not perfect, lots of things that could annoy some or be a dealbreaker for others, but I love it and enjoy shooting with it a lot! 😉

Keeping to two cameras is nice but easy enough, what I'd really like to know is the size of your lens cupboard... 🤔
Anyway, back to the topic at hand. The last camera I regret I bought is the Panasonic GX9. I made the (sadly) classic mistake of buying online on specs alone without trying the handling. Now, I'm an Olympus user since the early 90's. I've tried all the major and minor brands under the sun, but none gelled with me as much as Olympus does. So I thought, well, being MFT too, the GX9 can't be that different. Well, guess what, it is. Blocky body, horrible battery life, dreadful controls. It does good images, but it snuffs the joy of photography in me.
So I went back to my favourite hybrid ever: the Olympus E-M10 mk II.
Like you I try to keep my body count low, so I will sell the GX9, and pair my 10.2 with my E-M1 mk II. I cheat on the 2 bodies rule because I also keep an original E-M5 as a "suicide" body, the rationale behind being it came as a back cap with a lens I since sold for more without the camera attached than I bought in the first place.
Before that, I regret buying the E-M5 mk II on the flawed logic it must have been a better camera than the E-M10 mk II I was using. It's not a _bad_ camera, but it's heavier, it has too many functions for the number of controls that are crammed in the tiny body, and the controls are size-compromised. It's a rare case of Olympus chewing more than they could eat, IMHO. I know a lot of people who swear by this camera, so maybe it's just me. What I can't forgive is it made me sell the 10.2, and I spent years mourning it before I could recently buy another one.
And finally, my worst mistake of all was way back in the film days. I was young and easily swayed, so I was somehow convinced that AF days had arrived and my poor OM-1 (which I had bought 2nd hand as my first real camera, despite the fact it was built the year I was born) was horribly outdated. So I bought a Nikon F-401s... what a tragedy. The only silver lining was I hadn't sold my OM system gear before I realized how misguided the advice had been. I resold the Nikon at a slight loss, but the guilt stings to this day.

Man you are tough not to like the Sonys :)
My biggest mistake was to buy a Canon R: Being used to the Fuji X-T2 and X-T3, every button felt misplaced and the flip-out screen was a horror. If you don't use the Canon in parallel with a Fuji, it might be a great camera. At least it is good value for the money. Nice viewfinder, also.

You hit exactly where i am now with Fuji: best bargain ever made, fantastic features but really too slow switching from video to photo and viceversa... And there, if the lens is perfect for video, it's not so for stills; if it's the right choice for pictures, simply the focus is not so for video (either if manual or auto). It's boring because i hate sony or canon ergonomics and menus, and micro4/3 is not for me.... Maybe the last Z5 or Z6, or latest canon mirrorless.... I'm too choosy :)

For me it would have to be the Olympus EM1X. It wasn’t too bad at first but with each firmware it just got worse and worse. The weight and size didn’t bother me as much as all things that kept going wrong or at least sketchy. Now it won’t turn off for over 3 minutes after switching it off. It now seems to not switch from one battery to the next as the battery runs down and same goes for the Sd cards as one fills up. Also if you leave a battery in it for more than two days it goes totally flat. Getting it fixed is out of the question due the cost, so now it just sits on the shelf and collects dust. One of my friends has one that is also a shelf queen.

The 28mm is perfect to take beautiful close up shots of my daughter, and the GRIIIX just came along at the wrong time.
