With all do respect brother Caldwell, I’ve heard nothing short of Pastor John Wesley teach, and urge the world to believe that Jesus Christ is ‘The Way’ & Our Lord & Savior....who has risen from the dead with ALL POWER in his hands...
I do believe Pastor Wesleys extensive seminary & theology education & research has intimated many ‘only pulpit taught’ followers of The Lord!!
The Holy Spirit will make it very clear to anyone who is ready to broaden their understandings to receive, more than the ‘white washed’ version of religion, that ‘they’ only want us to know about. Our Father God is much bigger than what we have given him credit for. His amazing grace far exceeds his many works written in the Holy/King James version bible.
Once we realize how the different Councils....The First Council of Nicaea in 325, the First Council of Constantinople in 381, the Council of Ephesus in 431, the Council of Chalcedon in 451, the Second Council of Constantinople in 553, & more, especially King Cesar have altered religion to fit their own agendas & narratives, we will have a greater understanding in the WORD!!
Brother, I love you in Christ, and believed we are in a spiritual warfare. Therefore, I am certain you are fighting with the armor you have been equipped, and have equipped ourselves to fight with. As I am the same.
I pray for all of us , because in all honesty none of us were there to witness anything in any book written. Even scientific evidence may have been tampered with. We do not know for certain.
What I do know for certain is that our faith & works are the only things we have to stand on. With that being said, I’m taking my chances on believing who Yeshua HaMaShiac is. I’d rather believe, and have a 50% chance of making it into Heaven, than by not believing, and have a zero percent chance of making it in.

T Shug's World Thanks for your perspective. But frankly HJW’s theological training and seminary education is not intimidating. I do not have the credentials that HJW has but I have read extensively and there is nothing remotely impressive about his presentation. If those in the pulpit were more committed to exposition and training up faithful men then the seminaries would be virtually unnecessary. I do not begrudge seminary programs as long as their objective is biblical inerrancy and contending for the faith once for all handed down to the saints. The seminary should not place human experience on par or over with Scripture. Scripture is not HJWs ultimate authority, therefore, saying that he promotes John 14:6 are empty words. But many people are so impressed and titillated by the newest fad, the latest philosophy like the Athenians in Acts 17. HJW is the product of liberal thought. I was praying that his recent sabbatical would have given him some time to reconsider problematic stances like process theology. Sadly, he has decided to be relentless with programs like CIPI. When you say that you have faith you need to consider the foundation of that faith. It is not fideistic but should be based on objective truth not supposition or conjecture. Yes, it is true we did not physically witness the events of Christ’s ministry, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension, but we have a record of it’s prophetic advent and its fruition. If you understand text criticism, then you can appreciate historicity of the Christian claims. If we are skeptical of that record then we have no foundation for the Christian worldview.
So we're going to be doing "critical thinking" while examining the Bible. Yayyyyy! I'm here for it!

Not on my watch if they are willing to prayerfully search the Scriptures as the Bereans did for themselves and obey them.
Obedience is "better" than sacrifice.
We are praying for him also and his family.
I'm not a bible scholar but what I can say for certain is, the words that Jesus Christ used to overcome temptation by the devil was "It is written". So if its not "written", then maybe....just maybe....its not relevant.....maybe.....just maybe.....its not the way God intended us to see it? If Jesus faught temptation with scripture, "It is written", who are we to say its not enough?
We, as "Christians", say that the bible is the "inspired Word of God". We as "Christians" do not have the understanding of God. So who are we to say that God wants us to look beyond the very thing that our faith is based on - the resurrected savior Jesus Christ- the Word of God?
Christianity may be the religion, but following Christ Jesus is my lifestyle. I'm curious to see in what direction this goes in. However, I also pray that God keeps my mind heart and soul. I pray that God strengthens the spirit of discernment in me. I pray that, even if I understand the "perspective" that is being presented, I will not stray from nor neglect the TRUTH of the one and only True Living God. I also pray the same for the Pastor presenting, and the sheep that follow him. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

@@djpolo99 With all due respect, I'm pretty sure you know what Juanita meant, and that Valerie Bridgeman is not God, nor the Oracle of God. What she says doesn't trump the Word Of God! He said heaven and earth would pass away before one word he gave. God is who he said he was in his Word! If we're creating characteristics about God that don't line up with the BIBLE, we are coming up with a False Narrative, i.e. erroneous doctrine.

Page 44 "......the kind of assurance and guidance that should be given to children who seem destined to develop a sense of defeat and frustration.

My questioning the Bible and Baptist childhood teachings/interpretations is what informed my former Pastor Rev. Starsky D. Wilson to encourage me to go to Seminary. One of my many clear takeaways from seminary is that humans will use ANYTHING to justify their actions. Anything includes the Bible/religion. I'll be at Bible study. ;-)
Hello again I am late but I am here, I always pray and ask GOD to send me a word, and my faith have me believing HE does just that. And one day a sermon from you popped up and it was truly what I needed to hear at that moment and time. So it encouraged empowered and elevated me in mine situation you knew nothing about but GOD did. Pastor you mention why bad things happen to good people, well (Matthew 19:17) (Mark 10:18) (Luke 18:19) which Jesus is speaking asking why call me good when there is only one good and that's GOD. I love that scripture because sometime their encounter with JESUS was told a little different in their writing except that scripture about GOD being the only ONE good. Then I had to go deep and beyond what people see as good and what GOD see as good by defining the word good with the unction of the HOLY SPIRIT who is One of my best friends now. So stay faithful fruitful and faultless the best you know how and I will be lifting you up in my prayers. Blessings

This bible study feels much like seminary. The best counsel I received upon entering seminary was "eat the meat , spit out the bones" like most foods I am willing to taste it but if it does not nourish me or appeal to me I will spit it out.

Okay, I'm old school and I'm not ready to push it until I hear where his teaching is leading to. I'm a also a Baptist, born Baptist, and also I will probably die a Baptist. When he uses the word beyond, one should be curious as to "beyond what". He also touched on two subjects that he born and raised to believe until something happened to, I guess, take a different view(s) on those subjects. I will listen though to get a clear understanding as to why his views were changed and what are his current views as it aligns with the Word of God and not with the old school Baptist teaching.

In 2017, I cried out to the Lord teach me how to depend on You, Jesus?! I grew tired following man and I decided to follow Jesus!!! Jesus inform His disciples that He will have to go away in John 16:7. So the Holy Spirit has taught me to Look for Him. How? His fruit! I'm loving this concept you've put together Pastor and the more dangerous the better. I was raised born and bred in the Baptist church as well, in fact, I was the Pastor's only daughter. I am shocked to learn that the NBC has banned you but then again I'm not because obviously, they haven't changed much from when I was young. Maybe that's why so many of their churches are empty on Sunday mornings and Alfred Street is packed. Thank you for what you're trying to do. I get it.
I am baptist born bred-church filled and every member rely on the HOLY SPIRIT for TRUTH. So sorry Mr. Wesley had a bad experience and now thinking everyone was enveloped in his experience. Yes Dr. Wesley. Some times our revelation or illumination of God's word in one is usually hard for another to digest because of tradition. So teaching is critical.

As long as you please God, you can't worry about what men say.
We may not agree with all of Pastor Wesley theology and I must say I don't but it's very thought provoking. The bible should strecth of faith and challenge us to think deeper than the surface.

I love this kind of thought provoking teaching that my cousin is doing. He comes from a history of being at the Baptist conventions as a young child. HJW your definition of what it takes to be a Christian does not comport with Scripture. Repentance is seldom mentioned in modern evangelism. This is why we can have a version of salvation without any consideration for repentance.

I think Peter Enns book, "The Bible Tells Me So: Why Defending Scripture has Made Us Unable To Read It" is a good companion book to read along side "Can I Push It?"; its palpable and compelling.

The Spirit Himself will guide the "convinced" sinner by the goodness of God to repentance from dead works and faith towards God in Christ Jesus.
This is the result of attending a liberal seminary. MLK went through something similar though we don't often talk about it.
Question. Paul didn’t write the Bible for the year 2020, but at the same time if the word is inspired by God, then God would know that His word would last forever, which includes now, therefore being applicable to now ?
Movies are made via inspiration of true stories but not verbatim of the whole truth. Paul’s writing may have been inspired by God but they weren’t God’s words written by Paul. This is why it’s important how the Bible came to be as we know it today. Only in the Old Testament and the book of revelations did God command that His words be written; nowhere else.
Another example: a preachers scripture filled self help book or a really good sermon may be God inspired but again not God commanding His words be written. It is simply one’s own personal interpretation.

@Pinochle15 Q&J - You’ve just asked a very loaded but very good question. It would take a way more than a comment section to explain that answer wholly but I’ll try me best to give it in short.
If you have a red letter bible (and if not get the Bible app on your device and depending on the translation, most will have red letters for every word spoken by Jesus) go read ONLY the red letters (Jesus’ own words) and truly seek how one should apply them to their life. People shy away from understanding or quoting Jesus’s words because they are open ended answers. He almost never gives a direct yes or no, right or wrong answer. What He does is leave the question open and puts it back onto you the seeker to answer. His words cause you to look at yourself and the state of your own heart. You can ignore Jesus’ words but you cannot fake living them out. Paul gives you a list of do’s and don’t’s, rights and wrongs and leaves not much room to examine your hearts intention. Paul’s words only looks at the outer self which is easy to hide behind. This is why it’s easy to have fake believers among us today. Follow the list of laws and look the part.
No one likes a question answered with a question because it challenges the asker to critically think and look at self. So the easy thing to do is to follow the man who looks the part and gives straight answers with finality and authority; that is Paul. But Jesus, the one who lived the perfect life and died for our sins and rose from the grave to make us reign with Him, didn’t give answers as Paul did, there’s something to be said of that.
So again read only Jesus words and I believe you will get your answers.

Capeverdeprc evident in the comments thread. Some folk comfortable with critical analysis for everything other than the bible. The bible is the code but was also of its time. We need to be able to mix the word, explore this in societal current context but still have unwavering faith. The fear in the comments suggest we can’t ask questions so remain indoctrinated with little appraisal. How can asking questions that other people think be so scary?
black princess you said the word “comfortable”...folks don’t realize being comfortable is what also keeps one oppressed, stagnant, etc. It’s also “easier” for people to go along with what they know or what they were taught because exploration would mean to think for oneself. I really have a lot of issues with much of what he says in this message. For example, Thomas didn’t necessarily doubt their word, but he doubted what Jesus had been teaching for three years as he walked with Jesus. Also, you cannot, I dare say must not only deal with scripture experientially. At some point you’ve got to trust that The Word speaks for itself even when we disagree. I believe he is guilty of taking it out of context.

Pastor, This form of study may be risky however the rewards warrant the exercise. People will come to respect the differences of others while having God confirm and establish their beliefs.
May I ask, so which sins did Jesus die for? Select sins? What He calls sin is sin! Also, there is no mention of the Holy Spirit. He is the one who teaches, encourages and reminds us of what God has said. The Holy Spirit has a role. He unifies the body of Christ. I fully appreciate that the Word of God has been used by many in the wrong way, like how they printed a different bible for slaves, omitting chapters about Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt, Revelation, etc, to deprive them of hope; while emphasizing parts that subjugate them; but if you read the Word for yourself and ask the Holy Spirit to interpret it for you, He will. We are all equal in God’s eyes. Galatians 3:28. It is clear that we are living in the Age of Deception. 2 Tim. 3:5 “.. having a form of godliness but denying it’s power.”

I understand the tension in today's culture to make the Bible palatable to people. Are we asking the Bible to bend to meet people's belief or asking people to bend to match the Bible's teaching? Just a question.

I’m confused on this! It’s like he left and went through something. I not sure where he is going with this, but I’m hoping this is Christ driven. He has such an anointing on his life which s scary. What or who is in his ear? This is disheartening for me because I love to hear his preaching. His views on Salvation and Homosexuality is questionable. I pray God is directing his path so,that he doesn’t lead others astray.

Bible study without the bible is not bible study. Please call it something else. HJW as a pastor please consider the words you are mandated to teach versus the words society wants to hear. If there is no firm foundation for truth in your teaching, then sincerely and respectfully you are not only being derelict as a pastor but you are betraying your listeners and the convictions of the Christian faith. You can teach with patience without teaching folly. Abuse of the truth is NOT an argument against the truth.

One minute it’s can God be bigger than one interpretation, and we have to evolve.....but on the other hand he’s talking about how people are misquoting scripture or taking it out of context. In those cases where he says a person misquotes scripture or take it out of context could it be a) he needs to also take his advice and bring himself to see the other persons “interpretation” OR b) he needs to take his advice and continue to “evolve” to see the other persons view of scripture.
It’s seems to be that if a traditional sound doctrine that is not liked or is no longer cool these days then whoever believes it needs to “evolve”. But if it’s a fuzzy, warm, unrestrictive, liberal doctrine then it’s then “sound interpretation” lol.
