    High res. sounds a lot clearer, more natural. Good luck!

      +Audioselection yeah it is. It is more apparent when you are up close to the phone.

    Hi res audio sounded better for the front camera. Not a noticeable difference for the back camera. The video warping during the audio focus test was concerning. Also, the zoom was rather jumpy. I wonder how this camera would sound in a live concert environment. How would the audio focus do?

      +Rob McGowan Yeah it was a bit messed up. Hopefully this is only a problem when using acoustic sound (not a feature I care about too much of I'm honest).
      I'm going to do some videos this week so hopefully I will be able to get a clearer picture of what it is capable of.

      Kevin Muldoon this is my main concern. I record a lot of concert footage. With my previous HTC's the audio has always been decent but the video is awful. I'm trying to find a phone that is good all around. I'm really bummed out about the lack of headphone jack. I guess I'll have to look into buying a decent set of wireless headphones to solve that issue.

      +Michelle Martineau I wasn't too pleased about the lack of a headphone jack either. An adapter is provided. That's something that could get easily lost, but it's easily replaced too.
      I have a pair of wireless earphones for the gym and I have the provided earphones too. Granted, I don't find them comfortable, so I might look at getting another pair.
      Long term, I don't think the lack of headphone jack is a deal breaker as long as you buy the right equipment. I would also suggest looking at the Samsung S8 as that still has a headphone jack.

      Jade Matteson hi, then did you find a phone that can record concert with outstanding performance ?coz i am also looking for such a phone to record concert n wondering if u11 is suitable ?

      @KevinMuldoon  7 років тому

      +Catherine Tsang It isn't something I have tried out. All smartphones can record audio, but you're unlikely going to get quality that matches a dedicated audio recorder.

    I have this camera htc u11, I have it for live gig recording but not impressed by the audio distortion in loud gigs, is it possible to lower the mic recording level. You video is very helpful thanks, I have subscribed. Cheers..

      +carot2003 Glad you found the video useful.
      The default app doesn't give you a lot of control over audio. I can't think of any app that does give you control over audio.
      Have you tried high res audio and 3D audio to see what the difference is like?

    • @carot2003

      Kevin Muldoon I have used 3d audio and will try hires in future, I found 3d sounds changed with zooming as at gig sound check and HTC mics picking up stereo more as zooming out, not good zooming as sound from pa changes, better to hear one sound constant when zooming so will use hires next time..

    • @KevinMuldoon
      @KevinMuldoon  7 років тому

      +carot2003 Yeah acoustic focus changes the audio. That can be disabled if necessary.
      My primary use for the phone, from a video recording point of view, is vlogging style videos where I talk to the camera or record footage and talk whilst doing so. I appreciate others need better mics for recording music.

      Totally agree. Htc One M9 audio recording was waaaaay better at live gigs. Really disappointing

    Kevin, do you think this camera is the best one (or close to it) out there right now? I know the ratings are great. I did watch your video reviews but it was hard to tell. Seemed to do a real nice job for a night camera even though it was a bit grainy. Most cameras won't even pick up anything at night. Also are you liking the audio recording? That seems pretty great too.

    • @KevinMuldoon
      @KevinMuldoon  7 років тому +1

      +Michelle Martineau Yeah I think it's one of the best. From samples it looks similar to the S8 and perhaps a little better than the pixel and iPhone 7.
      Audio recording seems really good in my opinion, though my comparisons are coming from a phone that was released 18 months ago.

    i have recently purchased the U11 and i was wondering about the use of an external microphone. I have a sony ecm 907 stereo condenser microphone with internal battery. I am using the camera / video app that came with the phone .
    When i plugged it in using the 3.5mm / usb adapter, a dialog box popped up to inform me that the microphone was being installed .... in all cases the microphone is connected prior to launching the camera app. in fact it makes no difference if i plug it in after the app has launched
    i have also tried an electret unpowered lavalier mic but it treats this as a headphone
    But the video app continues to only use the onboard microphones. I have tried front and rear cameras, 3d audio and hi-res audio in all possible combinations.
    Is this simply a limitation of the camera software? or..
    Do i need to use a particular type of microphone?
    Do i need to install a 3rd party app such as Filmic Pro?
    Do i need to change any other settings?
    Do i need to install a patch/ app to get round this issue?
    Thanks in advance... in fact, it was your review that finally prompted me to go for this phone. As i will be using it at loud concerts and in case the sound is distorted...(as has been the case with my previous samsung notes) i'm looking for a workaround .

      Does your mic have a TRS or TRRS connection?
      Most external kids are TRS so if you're connecting to your phone you probably need to use a TRS to TRRS connector.

    • @clungebucket23
      @clungebucket23 6 років тому

      Many thanks Kevin...All the mics ive tried so far are TRS of course... ive done a fair bit of research today and it's mostly pointing to this issue. i've just ordered a 3.5mm splitter cable for either mic or headphone TRS 'in' and TRRS 'out'. I only hope that the polarity (CTIA / OMTP) get's me all the way in. Bearing in mind that i'm having to go via the thunderbolt usb-c / 3.5mm female jack adapter that came with the phone. Their native headphones are very good and the adapter works with my existing headphones. That's not to say their adapter isn't weird (sic) in such a way to obstruct the use of an external mike... I also tried using Open Camera 3rd party app that has a fantastic array of options including mic source...all to no avail. I will keep you posted on my progress. Once again, thanks.. sterling work chap!

    • @KevinMuldoon
      @KevinMuldoon  6 років тому +1

      That's ok. It should still work.
      I have the HTC U11 and when I record from my phone it goes HTC U11 > usb type C to 3.5mm adapter > TRS to TRRS adapter > Shure VP83. I usually record via Open Camera, but the default camera app seems to recognise any external mic so I use that sometimes.

    • @KevinMuldoon
      @KevinMuldoon  6 років тому

      Oh and good luck. I reckon the TRRS adapter will sort the problem out :)

    • @clungebucket23
      @clungebucket23 6 років тому

      Yes... The Trrs adapter did the trick, thanks... All I need to do now is find a video app that has manual gain control... Open Camera has a few levels to select from but makes no difference. There are a few mics with built-in gain control but I have two good quality Sonys

    Maybe the 3D audio will be more suitable when filming outside to get more sound in from the surroundings. Cheers

      +Cornelius la Grange Yes that's what I thought. I'll need to go out one day and take lots of videos and see how the phone performs using the front and back cameras.

    Had this u11 for a year now and still cant figure how the fuck to operate the 3d audio. I wish they had made it so that the "vedio" as you pronounce it would not zoom in as you focus the microphones.

    I think HiRes is better in a rock concert, I want to record some scene in Roger Waters.
    I write from Hungary, so I've got a little accent too. You live in north- Europe? Just a tipp

      Yeah hires is good but is unfortunately recorded in a format not widely supported.

      +Michael Hazell The LG V20 is a great phone, but it was never released in Europe. Hopefully LG changes that for the V30 and releases it here.
