I’d love to see a video like this on the early stages of flash Isaac
I was really disappointed when the game didn't come out last year, like it was scheduled to, but I'm glad that you gave it the time that it needed to be the best game it can be.
Kudos on sticking with your guns and relying on the one core aspect.
And in turn following through with discarding the whole exploration aspect and everything that went into it that year.
It probably wasn't easy. But sometimes you have to kill your darlings, as the writers put it.
Though I bet it will pay off! If there's anyone I trust with keeping a consistent vision towards a very particular game design experience, it's you.
It's interesting to hear that something similar happened during development of Super Meat Boy.
I know some people that were already put off by the warp zone levels that had you play as one of the other characters, so who knows what these people would have thought about completely different genre sections during gameplay. Either way, having them as optional secret levels was just the right approach I think, plus the change in controls was justified as the levels themselves still followed the same logic.
Weird, I really liked those levels. My favorite character to play is probably Ogmo. Still trying to unlocked the Kid, I've only just started playing a few days ago, though.
I believe when Edmund talked about SMB mini games it was just a hypothetical example of an unnecessary feature, he never actually planned to put them in the game.
There's an alternate universe where Bum-bo got a lot of exploration and Three Houses went from combat map to combat map! There is a good argument to be made for simplicity, even when it means trimming back something that seems important at first.

This is one of the most interesting artstyles in a game in a while.
It was interesting seeing your drawing process in action.
It's absolutely amazing hearing your insight into the game design process. I struggle a lot with making art assets, and your descriptions of how you develop them and why you think certain things look good was really enlightening. Deciding whether art assets look good or bad and keeping a consistent style are so foreign to me and it was really interesting to hear you talk about how you go through that.
Thanks for a great video and for everything else friend, your games have given me a lot of good times and Isaac was really inspiring to me when I was starting to learn programming myself.

I know these videos are kind of a marketing push for Bumbo, but for what it's worth I really like the Edmund dev commentary content and would like to see more in the future!
This is actually the first time I'm gonna pre-order a game on Steam

I love this behind the scenes stuff! Especially since I just started playing and have some context for what it’s like now.
The “plain”ness of it seemed almost a bit simple and boring, but I agree that the over-detailed look was too much. Also, it must’ve hurt to just throw out so many months of work. But the end product is def something to be proud of :)

I just found a cool remix of my innermost apocolypse and was reminded of the countless hours i spent on isaac and it’s remake. Then today, this video comes out and i have another game to look forward to :)

The exploration part sounds really interesting, ngl, but I can see how it could be annoying to navigate and do stuff like backtracking on a game like this.

Honestly i wish there was exploration but im still excited to see how it turns out. I hope there are many unlocks, similar to how they work in isaac.

It would be cool to have dicey dungeons style exploration imo. Things like choosing whether or not to go to a treasure room before the boss could add more depth to the game.
maybe if you pass up a treasure room you get some bonus coins?

im curious, is bum-bo gonna have an Eden equivalent, where you start with two random spells?
What I'm hoping for is a Bum-bo the Lost, which you can assume what it is from the name.
Then a Dark Bum-bo, which is basically Blue Baby.
And then an Eden Bum-bo, which is what you said.
Maybe, maybe not. I think if he was going to tell us that he would have shown it in his gameplay. It may be something secret we unlock.

@@Badsy_the_Edgecat From what I've seen in the gameplay, I could see Bum-bo the Lost definitely working as long as he has a Holy Mantle-like item and probably some other benefit.
You'd have to be really careful and plan things out really well, of course.
I don't see why people wouldn't want the game to be released on the switch with a touchscreen-only option.
Playing ace attorney for example on the switch with the joy cons removed feels much more relaxed than with the joy cons being attached.
And honestly if the "simplicity" of the game allows for the option without feeling restricted, then i imagine it to be the optimal way to enjoy the game.
tbh Im more here for the game's random cardboard style than the Isaac ref

I am from Austria! and I never heard any of those words. "Kohl" or "Kraut" is a lot more common - maybe you are thinking of Bavaria or Switzerland
then again who knows what those crazy ppl in Tirol or Vorarlberg talk like - so maybe I m wrong

I enjoyed Isaac more in my ipad than in my PC so I’m looking forward for bumbo there as well.
@@alejandroelnecave1762 I asked again on his latest stream and he said *probably* early next year. They still have some iOS publishing kinks to iron out and are still pretty focused on the PC release.
