Thanks. I like me the "kiss" approach for an explanation on things... now in 3 days when I actually get around to an oil change I will remember how much I to put in my primary. 🤙
Just bought a gasket off the site. Came onto youtube to figure out how to change primary oil in the first place only to find you here, with exactly what i needed to know. Bravo, J&P. Bravo
For those frozen in fear when he says it should be up right. You pull the drain plug and grab the front brake and sit on it and rock it side to side if you want. Get off your bike, put the derby cover back on and take the inspection cover off and fill as he stated. Check for leaks.
Hey thanks for the video, besides the engine oil change and the primary fluid change, is there any other spot to change? I did my engine oil and I’m about to do the primary like shown in this video, what else am I missing? My buddy says there are 3 areas on the eve to change??
I believe like stated in this video, that is for the “big twins” I’m also new to the Harley scene as of literally this week. But believe only two for these as the primary is technically 2 in 1?
Don't worry about it . Primary oil is sold in quarts for a reason . Drain the oil when hot with the bike on the side stand and just stick a quart of oil in through the chain inspection cover using a funnel .
I have a 2020 iron 1200 sporty I gotta do a oil change here in the next couple days.. off the top of your head do u know if the put the same amount of oil in the clutch pack for my bike as you used on the bike in this video?
Buy theee quarts put in two, run it for like 10 seconds and wipe the dipstick and check twice, do the same thing until it’s where it should be on the dipstick then go ride it for about 2 minutes and check again
I have some white foamy substance in my oil I’ve never checked it after it ran what could this be from the spot where I fill my bike oil is super full. I check my oil pretty often I just added some before I rode last and then I went to ride today and that’s what I found but I checked it after I had already started it and it was white and foamy and filled all the way up the whole stick I shut it off and then checked after 20 minutes and it’s still super full of the whole reservoir thing I have a 2000 sportster
Which oil was used? Harley says use 20w50 the same engine oil in Primary. Do we have any benefit of using a primary specific oil ? What weight is that ?
I have an 1986 883 that big inspection cover doesn't look like it comes off so easily (No torex bolts just a screw off plate in the middle that looks like a Chevy symbol) cant see inside, how much oil do I put in
Should be 24 ounces for your bike, but check your manual also you have a weep hole to check your oil level just left of center and low on the primary cover.
I have an 86 - the whole primary cover has to come off to change the clutch cable, eushkt! But is has the small oil overflow plug though so maybe it's the same.
My bike is grinding when I down shift into 2nd/1st gear. It’s coming from shifter. Would changing the primary oil help this? I have a 2009 sportster 1200.
If you’ve never done it, I’d just do it anyway. By doing this you’ll get an idea of how much metal shavings are kicking around in there. Fresh fluid “should” help, if it’s not permanent damage done already. The fluid that came out of this bike in the video was scary...not good.
I just changed my primary and now I’m having gear shifting issues. I can’t get shifted into 4th or 5th and sometimes it doesn’t give the firm stop when I get down into 1st. Any reasons for this?
HadronCollider90 20w50 is too thick for primary, 75w90 is for gearbox ir car diffs, i use ATF it's the right consistency and isn't expensive like Harleys own oil.
Hey what's guy, I'm looking to get a primer fluid change for my 1200cc Sportster 2002' I just replace a new Stator on my bike, and I need to see if I can get a way for some basic primary fluids from my nabrohood store AutoZone hopfuly I find for bikes, what do you thing?
You keep saying O-Ring. Sportster use Square Rubber Rings. Not O-Rings ! Also there is 4 area's that have 2 Dimpels to hold Square Rubber Ring in place. So don't tell us to apply Grease. But to Push Square O-Ring in to 4 Dimpels Areas. Your so miss leading. Or you just need Glasses. Maybe it's your first time doing ????
He was trying to be helpful, in case it does come out Also, you don't need an apostrophe for something that's supposed to be plural (areas), and learn the difference between "you're" and "your".

Drain hot on the side stand . Fill it through the chain inspection cover . 1 quart out , 1 quart in . There's more than one way to do this job .
Thanks. I like me the "kiss" approach for an explanation on things... now in 3 days when I actually get around to an oil change I will remember how much I to put in my primary. 🤙
I looked all over youtube to see a guy do it this way thinking it'd be easier than pulling my derby cover.
Thank you sir

Thank you! I like your teaching style!
Why not use the fill hole right in front of the derby cover that sits way up high were you dont have that issue of having to keep it flat?
Technically that hole is to check primary chain adjustment, but you could put fluid through there.
Thank you for the tutorial!
That thing looks like mud coming out lol, how long has it been in there?
Using colored transmission oil is useful when trying to diagnose the source of an oil leak.
what size are the O rings for the oil drain plug
Great Video told me a lot I didn't know. Thank you.
What weight is that oil??

Can you fill oil by removing the small oval shap plate above the gear shift shaft. ?
sure but its harder to see if you have the correct level
Don't worry about it . Primary oil is sold in quarts for a reason . Drain the oil when hot with the bike on the side stand and just stick a quart of oil in through the chain inspection cover using a funnel .
Oil colour it's normal ? Coz like Chocolate Milk... not Black ? Is it mixed with water ?
No, not normal. Gasket was leaking and more than likely water was leaking in.
Thanks You... 👌🏻🙏🏻
how much oil do you use???
He said 32oz for the primary. You'll need about three quarts for the engine oil change.
1 quart, my friend. That's all u need. It just keeps your gears lubed inside,, keeping her wet.
Can used oil primary only one put in transmission Harley Davidson sportster ?
Ehh what?

Would you torque the chain inspection screws to 7-9 ft lbs also?

Late here, but Harley has a certain oil called formula + for the primary. 10$ a quart. Just go see the parts department
Awesome video thanks!

A 1993 has bigger drain plug no primary cover but a smaller plug at right level to tell you right amount excess over flow if you will

Did you make any other changes? Clutch adjustment ?
Holy cow! How/why is the oil so creamy? Good time to change it.
More than likely water got past the derby cover gasket and into the primary fluid.
Emulsified with water.
@@LA_Commander I’ve never seen oil that color.
Then your doing something right...lol.
Why not fill it through the inspection cover? (serious question, not argument)
U totally can
Good vid, thank you
Heard 20w50 , 75w90 Mobil 1 now this
What did he use? Looked like ATF.
@@ravenousjerboa I think ATF is fine, i never use any special oil in the primary.

CJPlyz123 What language is that you're trying to speak?
I do this for a 92 right?
Will be very similair on a 1992 .
+/- 1 ounce really going to make a big difference? I just eyeball it
How often does this oil need to be replaced
My shop manual says every 5k
add 20w-50 engine oil, then someone said add gear oil, now add ATF to it?? Wtf
Manufacture says 20w-50 thats what i use
Why say 32 oz. Why not just say 2 quarts?
1 quart is 32oz
Why would you say 2 quarts for 32oz?
@@beardedforlife3740 mybad, I meant to say 1 qt= 32oz.
