  • In this video, 36 Hour Passage Sailing St Lucia to Antigua and Barbuda Non Stop 2020, we depart Rodney Bay St. Lucia and sail for Antigua and Barbuda, a 36 hour passage up the windward Islands, skipping the French islands Martinique and Guadeloupe due to Covid-19 lockdown and restrictions. Antigua is part of the Caricom bubble and we are allowed to go there if we can present a Negative Covid-19 PCR test result. On passage we are visited by a playful pod of dolphins and Dan shares how we adjust our rig to point higher in a Close Hauled upwind sail. #sailingtowindward #caribbeantravel #sailingchannel

In August of 2017 we sold everything and moved aboard Balachandra, a 1986 C&C44 sailboat, then sailed it over 300 nautical miles to Halifax Nova Scotia to spend a cold Canadian winter in the frozen waters of the North Atlantic. Sailing Balachandra is our UA-cam sailing vlog inspired by other great channels such as Delos and La Vagabonde, which documents the sailing adventures of myself and my partner Nawal as we navigate the globe. We also dive into lots of DIY boat projects both above and below decks, and share with you all of the pros and cons of living aboard full time. Sailing Balachandra is published weekly so please subscribe so you don't miss out on future videos!

Say hello to Mr Audie at Jolly Harbor Marina, he is a beekeeper and super good guy.
Also, I have a track from our approach to Barbuda with a 6' draft vessel, happy to share with you two if you plan to visit.

How far off the islands would you need to sail to stay out of the wind shadow? What about sailing on the windward side? I am just curious, I have no real sailing experience.

Great question. When we sailed all the way down from St Croix USVI to Grenada in the summer we were so far off the island chain that we couldn't see them and we had no loss in wind. This time when we passed Martinique we stayed 5 miles off shore and still had reasonable wind to make 5 kn. But when we approached Dominica and Guadeloupe we got closer on pupose as the conditions increased in the gulfs between and we were seeing 23+ kn and we used the islands as a reprieve so one of us could go below and sleep :) The windward side is doable but it would be bigger swell and high wind. No different than sailing in the middle of the atlantic ocean.
