Fun fact about one of the riffs:
"HAMMETT: I’ll tell you how the main [descending] riff to “Master of Puppets” came about. On the Ride the Lightning tour, James would always play the riff in the dressing room, but on the D string, and I’d play it simultaneously on the G string as a parallel-fourths harmony line. It sounded really dorky and funny. Then one day at rehearsal, James said, “Let me show you this really heavy song intro,” and proceeded to play that exact riff on the low E string. I said, “Ah, so you finally found a use for that dorky little thing!” It’s anything but dorky now."

5 if you count the Black Album, I think the big problem with Metallica is that their first 5 albums were some of the greatest Metal albums of all time that now expectations from fans have been set really sky high to the point where they get angry if an album or a live performance doesn't live up to expectations. Like Load, Reload, Death Magnetic and Hardwired aren't close to the greatness of those first 5 albums but they're still great albums. I always say, with Metallica the heavy never went away fans did.

That edit at 35:29 was brilliant.
Cliff talking about selling out during the Orion bit. Imo a song like Orion and their other instrumentals showcases how far and above Metallica were at back in the day. When they had Cliff and James still dressed in worn out jeans and a band shirt, headbanging beside Cliff..you can't get a better duo in creating the perfect metal that has it all. When you transfer those old Metallica songs onto a violin or piano, it sounds like some genius composer did it (which they were) Metallica in 86' with Cliff is the greatest metal act playing the greatest songs of all time. I like other metal but they set the bar.
People can prefer Slayer and their consistent songs about killers and hell, mostly playing fast and chaotic, or Megadeth where Dave tries to up the ante and write riffs that are technical and fast, but imo Metallica in the 80's destroys them all. The reason I've been listening to Master of Puppets consistently for 30 years is because it's timeless. I love Reign in Blood for what it is and can see how people can place it above MOP for a thrash record but I disagree with it. Master of Puppets has everything that makes great songs and is the pinnacle of Metal. People might think Reign is a better thrash record but it's not a better metal record.

Cliff was one of my older brothers best friends growing up in Castro Valley in the late 70's. He told me this funny story about a he and Cliff going "Back to School' shopping together. When the first day of school came that year, my brother was quite confused when his new bell bottom jeans were much, much tighter then he remembered. Apparently, there was a mix up at the local dungaree store and they went home with each others bags.
My brother is 12 years older than me and lived with his mom until he moved in with us at age 15.
One day years later, when I was about 12, My brother was driving me to my friends house to skate. I hopped in his truck and pulled out a cassette of this awesome band I loved and skated to with my buddies. Thats when he told me of his friendship with Cliff (and a couple of other guys that would form Faith no More). My mind was blown. Still is actually. I started playing and making music myself a short time after, learning drums and guitar as best I could, listening to old Metallica and Slayer albums.
IMO, Master of Puppets is the best Metal album of all time and Cliff was the main reason. He was coming into his own as a musician, writer and composer. It's an absolute tragedy his life was cut so short. Imagine what Justice for All (a fantastically angry guitar and drum album) could've been with Cliff. Imagine what Metallica could've been. Imagine no Bob Rock. No Load. No Re-load and all that other garbage that followed. UGH.
    One can only dream.

Here’s the thing: everything happens for a reason. Cliff never deserved what he got, never in a million years. But, Metallica’s history is their history. Personally, I love all main studio albums, at least parts of them. Load and Reload were a time of change for the band, due to the years of touring for the Black Album. And the Black Album was slowed down because they didn’t want to play the insane songs from AFJA. And the main reason AFJA was the way it was is because of Cliff’s death and Jason’s introduction. It hit the band hard. As much as I wonder what would’ve happened, everything happens for a reason, and you can’t deny that AFJA was good.

My birthday was 27 September. I was turning 17 the day Cliff died. I remember we were really upset about it. We were worried the band would end. We got really messed up that night I think??? And I remember it took a while to accept a new member of the band. It was different and took some getting used to. But they overcame it and we stuck with them. And will for all time. We were Metallica, and Metallica was us. For some reason, we felt, and I felt like it was a part of us. And if Metallica song was on at a party and someone talked shit about the band, it was a really bad night for that person. Looking back it all seems silly, but we loved those guys we never met. And the music meant so much to us. They were saying what we all felt and wanted to say. It was like they were singing about our life. And even being the old head that I'm am today, I still love it. I still turn it up as loud as I can when I'm driving my truck or riding my bike or working. And I still play those riffs on my guitar.
I wish the youth of today knew what it was to wait outside the music store for the record to be released...
But you know, for the life of me I still can not remember how I first came to know of the band called Metallica. But I'm glad I did.

In a world where Duran Duran, Debbie Gibson, Tiffany etc were everywhere, Metallica, Black Flag, Fear,MOD and countless others pulled us outta that. It’s hard to knock Metallica (as I go on from here knocking them lol) but I agree with you 100%. The Black album was a great top 40 album, but so far away from the Metallica I loved and those of us who could give a fuck about the mainstream music. They’ve tried to recapture it, but Metallica turned into what they hated: a business. They’ll always have a place in my world, but it’ll be the older stuff playing. They gave me hope when they hired Robert Trujillo (yup. I’m a suicidal tendencies fan.) but the choke Lars has on the band won’t allow that creativity to come out. Great docu tho.

I thought that was really cool. To this day, I still buy CDs, but I definitely get the appeal of vinyl.
