If you look at the other surveys that are closer to 195+ of the total countries you will find that: The two most religious countries are also the two poorest countries in the world(Exception of Vatican City). The least religious, Japan, China and South Korea also have the highest IQ's in the world.

David Hess To me, you're in contradiction. If you follow your own faith, you are against the church. The church does not say 'pick and choose what you want to believe'. In the US the practice was completely different emphasizing personal belief, while the Nordic believers primarily emphasized the tradition and cultural elements. I believe Anders Behring Breivik, the Norwegian terrorist also approached Christianity primarily from this angle. He emphasized christian traditions and values not the personal faith or belief. I don't think he was religious.

+Prince Asim Without looking into the science of things on how long does it take for a group of people to change their appearance there is one thing that you over looked. That is that groups can mix in with other groups and this can/does change the way that both groups look, However if a small group moves into a big group and over lets say 2,000 years you have mixing then you can slowly see a population change in appearance. Not trying to make a judgement call or anything just pointing out a flaw that I commonly hear people use in an argument as they are assuming that no mixing occurred. A great example of heavy mixing vs low levels of mixing are people of African decent living in the US and people of African decent living in Mexico. Most people wouldn't know this but far more Africans were taken to Mexico then were taken to the US. The big difference is that the African population in Mexico completely mixed in with the native population as well as Europeans mixing in with the native population. Because of this in the US you have something like an average of 20% mixing for African Americans with the general mixed group being European. This is actually really common in the Americas outside of the United states, Canada, and Argentina which all saw massive waves of immigration from Europe for a period of time in their recent histories (last 200 years so relatively recent). Out of something like 10,000,000 African salves less then 500,000 went to the United states.
It doesn't matter what you'd say. It's about statistics. A recent study fron the VU in Amsterdam found out that just 25% of the country is atheist. 53% is officially affiliated to a religion. So more than half of that country is religious.

Vietnam, Japan and China is misleading... VN for example is predominantly Buddhist which technically is at its heart athiestic, same with Japan, however people actively participate in religious festivals as part of their cultural heritage. China is misleading because the Gov is officially athiest and skews the statistics, and for the same reason as VN and Japan, people are more culturally active than religious. Also, take Confucianism in all three cases into account because it is also more or less Athiest.

I'm from the UK and I'd say if you were to do a full study of the entire country, I'd say it would be about 75% atheist and the rest different religions.
There is nothing wrong with religion. For the vast majority of people religion doesn't do anything to them, even if they consider themselves to be religious. I know a few people who have turned their life around by worshipping the Gods that I don't believe in, and I think that's a wonderful thing - difference in thoughts and opinions should be widely encouraged and accepted, not something to be ashamed of. I have my own religious beliefs, beliefs that tie into science and knowledge to gain insight rather than revealed scriptures. I believe everything that is written has some meaning to someone. There are the people who will abuse religion to justify their own causes, but that can be said to just about any motive. I'm just sick and tired of all these people, both in TYT and in the comment section, that believe there must be something wrong with you because you don't think like they do. The only thing wrong with religion and the people who are in it are the ones who are causing the oppression to people like you who oppress them. It's pathetic and we really need to evolve as a species if we are going to survive.

Normal civilian 5.56 Full Metal Jacket ammunition can pierce the Pistol rated body armor, so with the same logic you could ban most all rifle ammunition if you chambered a pistol to shoot it "which isn't hard". Culturally, I'm Christian. Intellectually I'm an atheist. But I'd never be a missionizing atheist. A world without religion wouldn't be a bit more peaceful. I know the video has nothing to do with a specific religion but I want to clarify something. Islam is actually very pro-knowledge and as far as I know, the tree of knowledge isn't directly referenced in the Quran. My understanding is that when Adam ate the forbidden fruit he became completely self-aware (He is described as becoming aware of their nakedness, and being embarrassed by it). Of course, there is an argument to be made that you can only seek knowledge once you've become self-aware. However, even before Adam ate the fruit, he is described as being very knowledgeable (it is even mentioned that he is a teacher to the angles). From this, I think the fruit is supposed to be a representation of corrupting influences i.e. he wasn't unaware of the things that could be detrimental to mankind before eating the fruit.

What I found in Colombia is when someone said that they were not "religious" they meant that they were not Catholic or particularly affiliated with a specific church, although they were still essentially very fundamentalist Christian.

Totally agreed on that religion shuns information. I used to be Christian and the most recent pastor I had preached that we needed to "train our kids like arrows, completely impervious to the atheists that for some reason just make it their life's goal to convince college students to stop being religious." Its wrong to interpret this "poll" in this way. I will give you clear example. When asked of Jews in Israel (vast majority of whom are NOT Atheists) if they are "Religious" they will say no, the question is why and how do they perceive "religious" as? Most people interpret it as keeping Shabbat fully, going to pray 3 times a day, fasting on all the fasts, and even some think of either the "Ultra-Orthodox" outfit and other things. MANY still pray on Shabbat, keep Kosher, some keep the Shabbat, and definitely keep Yom Kippur (day of atonement) where most of the country and roads are empty (because people are fasting and praying). And also keep the Holidays as well. ON THE OTHER HAND, this same poll can ask a Christian in the United States if they are Religious, and they can answer "YES" but all it could mean is that they celebrate Christmas once a year and believe in jesus. Soo see the disparity here?
I am Chinese. Actually Chinese are very religious, we just dont know it because our region is a mix of buddism, taoism and confusiousm. Most people dont consider themselves religious, but they still practice a lot of religion based activities. Just not under a single god's name.

There is a direct correlation between the most religious countries and the poorest countries. This survey only did 65 countries. If you look at the other surveys that are closer to 195+ of the total countries you will find that:
The two most religious countries are also the two poorest countries in the world(Exception of Vatican City).
The least religious, Japan, China and South Korea also have the highest IQ's in the world.

Sean Whitehall Think that varies with culture. E.g. there was a study of Thor and Odin worship in Nordic countries vs the US. In the US the practice was completely different emphasizing personal belief, while the Nordic believers primarily emphasized the tradition and cultural elements.
I believe Anders Behring Breivik, the Norwegian terrorist also approached Christianity primarily from this angle. He emphasized christian traditions and values not the personal faith or belief. I don't think he was religious.

+Prince Asim Without looking into the science of things on how long does it take for a group of people to change their appearance there is one thing that you over looked. That is that groups can mix in with other groups and this can/does change the way that both groups look, However if a small group moves into a big group and over lets say 2,000 years you have mixing then you can slowly see a population change in appearance.
Not trying to make a judgement call or anything just pointing out a flaw that I commonly hear people use in an argument as they are assuming that no mixing occurred. A great example of heavy mixing vs low levels of mixing are people of African decent living in the US and people of African decent living in Mexico. Most people wouldn't know this but far more Africans were taken to Mexico then were taken to the US. The big difference is that the African population in Mexico completely mixed in with the native population as well as Europeans mixing in with the native population.
Because of this in the US you have something like an average of 20% mixing for African Americans with the general mixed group being European. This is actually really common in the Americas outside of the United states, Canada, and Argentina which all saw massive waves of immigration from Europe for a period of time in their recent histories (last 200 years so relatively recent). Out of something like 10,000,000 African salves less then 500,000 went to the United states.

It doesn't matter what you'd say. It's about statistics. A recent study fron the VU in Amsterdam found out that just 25% of the country is atheist. 53% is officially affiliated to a religion. So more than half of that country is religious.

But when he get all philosophical about some religion he might not know much about I know he's a proud Atheists or Agnostic but all I have to say is till modern day Science is just now discovering stuff the Buddhist knew along time ago so again in my opinion categorizing Buddhism with the other main religions is kind of missing the nuances which Cenk rarely misses to explain in other issues. Vietnam, Japan and China is misleading... VN for example is predominantly Buddhist which technically is at its heart athiestic, same with Japan, however people actively participate in religious festivals as part of their cultural heritage. China is misleading because the Gov is officially athiest and skews the statistics, and for the same reason as VN and Japan, people are more culturally active than religious. Also, take Confucianism in all three cases into account because it is also more or less Athiest.

I just want to point out a few things. Aside from being curious how "atheism" was defined in this poll, you can be a Buddhist and an Atheist since it doesn't require the belief in gods. Also, Atheism and Agnosticism are not mutually exclusive. You can be Agnostic AND Atheist/Theist.

There is nothing wrong with religion. For the vast majority of people religion doesn't do anything to them, even if they consider themselves to be religious. I know a few people who have turned their life around by worshipping the Gods that I don't believe in, and I think that's a wonderful thing - difference in thoughts and opinions should be widely encouraged and accepted, not something to be ashamed of. I have my own religious beliefs, beliefs that tie into science and knowledge to gain insight rather than revealed scriptures. I believe everything that is written has some meaning to someone. There are the people who will abuse religion to justify their own causes, but that can be said to just about any motive. I'm just sick and tired of all these people, both in TYT and in the comment section, that believe there must be something wrong with you because you don't think like they do. The only thing wrong with religion and the people who are in it are the ones who are causing the oppression to people like you who oppress them. It's pathetic and we really need to evolve as a species if we are going to survive.

His definition of agnostic doesn't sound right to me, isn't he atheist if he is devoutly against religion? an agnostic is just a person who is in doubt, a person who is only willing to believe if he or she recieves proper proof of whatever religion he or she decides to join? by the way i consider myself agnostic and have lived by my definition for a long time.

I know the video has nothing to do with a specific religion but I want to clarify something.
Islam is actually very pro-knowledge and as far as I know, the tree of knowledge isn't directly referenced in the Quran. My understanding is that when Adam ate the forbidden fruit he became completely self-aware (He is described as becoming aware of their nakedness, and being embarrassed by it).
Of course, there is an argument to be made that you can only seek knowledge once you've become self-aware. However, even before Adam ate the fruit, he is described as being very knowledgeable (it is even mentioned that he is a teacher to the angles). From this, I think the fruit is supposed to be a representation of corrupting influences i.e. he wasn't unaware of the things that could be detrimental to mankind before eating the fruit.

What I found in Colombia is when someone said that they were not "religious" they meant that they were not Catholic or particularly affiliated with a specific church, although they were still essentially very fundamentalist Christian.

But I think China being the least religious should not be taken too seriously. First because wasn't religion was illegal in China ever since the 1949 revolution? And second because my family and many others immigrated from China and then were convinced by ignorant westerners to become Christians. Being raised in a totalitarian country with no critical thinking ability makes these people the most vulnerable to accepting religion as fact.

I'm an agnostic and I'm a Christian as well. Agnostic doesn't mean you are AGAINST religion, it means you think it's impossible to prove or disprove the existence of religion.

Its wrong to interpret this "poll" in this way. I will give you clear example. When asked of Jews in Israel (vast majority of whom are NOT Atheists) if they are "Religious" they will say no, the question is why and how do they perceive "religious" as? Most people interpret it as keeping Shabbat fully, going to pray 3 times a day, fasting on all the fasts, and even some think of either the "Ultra-Orthodox" outfit and other things. MANY still pray on Shabbat, keep Kosher, some keep the Shabbat, and definitely keep Yom Kippur (day of atonement) where most of the country and roads are empty (because people are fasting and praying). And also keep the Holidays as well. ON THE OTHER HAND, this same poll can ask a Christian in the United States if they are Religious, and they can answer "YES" but all it could mean is that they celebrate Christmas once a year and believe in jesus. Soo see the disparity here?

it's much more secular state than religous state.
I am Chinese. Actually Chinese are very religious, we just dont know it because our region is a mix of buddism, taoism and confusiousm. Most people dont consider themselves religious, but they still practice a lot of religion based activities. Just not under a single god's name.
