The purpose of a checklist is to do all the right things as quickly as possible even when facing novel (to you) situations. It baffles me that they have a crazy long checklist in situations where every second counts.
and if and since there are checklists for everything, or nearly everything, why not also have one for this ominous -outside check-? And have right on the top and with big letters, this -Pitot tubes and system -? But as one accident investigator said, it is ok to sit in a nice chair on the computer. And say, with hindsight and very smug, this could have done. And that button should have been pressed...
Checklists are like they are to make sure there's no vague or ambivalent information. Ideally pilots are to familiarize themselves with the checklists regularly. Allowing them to perform the steps more quickly without having to question its content or meanings.
They should prioritize landing instead of wasting time in the air checking the crazy amount of long checklists. Smoke in an aeroplane is not a joke since almost everything in a plane is highly flammable
@@AhmadNaveedKhan1996it at the time at least then was procedure for swissair pilots to do the checklist and a little bit of smoke is common so at first they didn’t think anything was seriously wrong
I'm not angry with the many checklists, but why take Swissair 111 away from the Airport area to dump fuel? Why not dump fuel from over 10,000ft or land without dumping fuel. That way we would have had a chance for survivals
This episode versus any of the others that I've seen, shows a level of investigation that is so high it's so amazing these people the investigators around the world they have one of the most tuff and no no they have the toughest and most critical job in the world as far as I'm concerned thank you to all of these people that daily go without ever hearing any praise thank you.
Exactly, it makes no sense that any situation where they felt compelled to wear their masks didn’t instantly compell them to be like “hmmmmm, MAYBE we should declare a mayday.”
Absolutely! & in my opinion didn't convey to Everyone of the Controllers just as the one said he didn't think it was a serious problem you can't tell me time wasn't waisted..tragic...
Not sure if it's meant to come across this way, but man does the pilot seem incompetent. Failure to recognise the serious issue they were in and decides to stay in the air to dump fuel in a holding pattern? Insane.
Yeah, absolutely baffling. I just couldn't believe that's what seriously happened. I know nothing about being a pilot, but just common sense told me that was absolutely catastrophically stupid
About a year after this incident my parents were on a cross Canada flight. There was a strong smell of smoke in the passenger cabin about an hour after takeoff. The crew made an announcement they were diverting and landing immediately. Within 15 minutes the plane landed safely in Calgary. I'm sure the Swissair fire was fresh on the minds of the pilots and ATC.
Several things I don’t understand your entire cockpit is to the point you need your oxygen mask and you don’t declare a emergency nor do you start early wanting to land immediately and start preparing to in that 30 min window you were given than you fly out towards the ocean already having this problem to dump fuel. You should have just landed. I’m sorry but this was a instructor and a experienced pilot. I’m not saying he couldn’t fly well but common sense and logically thinking in a emergency situation there was no logic on the captains part. They still might have made it but he had 30 mins to arrive at the airport 20 mins later he’s over the ocean dumping fuel. No the air controller did everything right he himself was concerned the pilot was to high and by his wording more less why wasn’t he descending to be able to land. Bless all those souls and there family’s so sad.
Those two guys were reluctant to descend in the first place. When the ATC cleared them to descend to 3000ft they simply replied: negative. The cabin isn’t ready for landing/fuel dump hasn’t done. What a moron! I totally blame this accident on the flight crew. Their lack of situational awareness and quick decision skills sealed the fate of everyone on board.
The $2 hr. maintenance person in Peru got jailed because of systems and procedures that were wrong to begin with. They should have had a bright orange cover with a flag hanging down.
The “flying blind” episode is really terrifying, I don’t know about you, but if everything fails, I would resort to using a glass of water to get an idea of what my planes attitude was and use a tube of mercury to get an idea of what my altitude would be, is it primitive? Yes. Will it work when nothing else works? Yes.
the only movement from water you will get, is turbulence & flying inverted i believe.. that could be wrong too, look it up tho, it’s actually crazy.. a lot of people have tried using a half full snow globe of water & it just does not work.. kinda blows my mind the more i think about it
I dunno but it seemed like a lot of messing round & delay getting to the ground, dumping fuel etc. In my view the SECOND puff of smoke should have instigated a beeline to the nearest landing site, preferably a runway!
it is of course easy for us now, to sit in the safety of a computer chair and comment. And still, of one company I never heard of. Who installed that gaming/gambling thing. Why was the -turn off all electricity in the passenger area - switch breaker bypassed? No one did check how hot this thing became? How much electricity it used? Was the wiring thick enough and safe enough to handle all that additional electricity?
I truly understand. I chickened out on flying and took a 16 hour train to Florida from south Carolina full of stank loud people and a dude who wanted me to date him. I wish I would have flown instead. Lol. And yes, you are most likely to die in a car crash my friend. But I do understand.
I'm not an airplane pilot, I'm a fishing boat captain out of San Diego. But even halfway through this event, I was already calling this captain a moron. Here's why. First, "Where there's smoke, there's fire," and when you're in an enclosed vessel, be it airborne or waterborne, any sign of smoke is considered an EMERGENCY SITUATION. We have a saying on ships, and it goes like this: "A FIRE AT SEA CAN RUIN YOUR ENTIRE DAY." We take that statement seriously. This so-called "professional" captain should have put this airplane on the ground ASAP, but instead he flew around like a student pilot enjoying the view. This was an accident just waiting to happen, but could have so easily been avoided. He had plenty of time to land before things went critical.
@@tiffsaver Yes, you said it better than I just did! D'oh! Lol! But yeah, land the darn plane ASAP! I wonder how much quicker they could have landed if they just headed staight for halifax on that 2nd puff of smoke. What if's I know, but this urgency should be built into the procedures. My heart aches for all those people & their unimaginable suffering. I can't believe such an incredible electrical overload ever had the opportunity to occur. An excess of maybe 5 or 10 times the current rating of a cable is required to heat a cable to red heat like that. Where were the fuses? Arcing? Heating & cooling? This was rushed & because of this, hundreds died. So amateur. So tragic. It should never have happened.
For all the experts saying that he should have continued directly towards the airport. It didn't matter since they would have crashed before reaching the airport anyway.
@@Theegoaatno, they might not. You can look it up, flight was doomed the moment it took off. Those pilots did exactly how and what they were trained to do.

I never gave flying a second thought. I 'hopped' from Sandy Eggo to LA, or whereever, with all the trust in the world, never, ever, even considering that any danger or malfunctions, organic or inorganic, might be an issue. I even put my beloved boys, about 7 and 8 years old, on a flight from Boise to Atlanta, without a thought that the [invaluable] Attendants would look after them; the aircraft was sound; and everyone would do their job, and beyond, when needed. The mechanics, electricians, & all whose job was to make the aircraft safe & sound, did their jobs perfectly. The flight crew would b perfect. Of these things I had faith & confidance. Thank God, they all did. My babies flew clear across America, twice, & thanks to so many consciencous people, doing their jobs well, i got my babies back. Thank YOU (plural). All of you.
This just one of the many reasons i will not fly even though I’ve heard it said many times that flying is safer than driving well there’s practically danger in anything and in things we do as we go about our lives nowadays I still prefer taking my chances driving rather then taking a risk at flying I didn’t know anyone on this flight and unfortunately happened many years ago my prayers and condolences to the families and friends for their sudden unexpected loss of a dear loved one (s) my heart goes out to them all and to all the people who perished rest in eternal peace in paradise

Is that one air traffic controller Joey Jeremiah? 😄 I can't imagine being a passenger on these planes and watching the ocean getting closer and closer, knowing you're gonna crash into the ocean, facing imminent death. How horrific!
Of course he's going to do an outstanding job trying to locate the plane his uncle is on that plane I understand the man saying he might get too emotional but come on now who wouldn't he will be the main one to look for the plane even if he had to die with no scuba gear
1:35:51 I'm sorry, i really feel for the loss of all those people, but Boeing is not in any way responsible for pilots and maintenence crews not doing their jobs right. That kind of frivolous law suit is equivalent to survivors of a shooting suing a firearm manufacturer for some criminal lunatics use of the firearm they made. It's blame shifting, it's unjust, it's objectively wrong, and sadly it seems to get more common every day with people looking for a payday anywhere they can find one.
There's so many things that annoy, or outright anger me about the uneducated comments made in the video. The Guy blaming SwissAir for a material that was industry standard (and has since changed). Maybe McDonnel Douglas had some liability, but I don't see where SwissAir possibly could, they just operated the jet as designed with excellent pilots and proper maintenance. Then, there's the lawyer saying that because a low paid, under trained employee didn't do his job, it was the manufacturers' fault (Boeing). There's a gazillion things in this world where if you don't use or maintain it within its design parameters, then it can cause serious injury or death. 😡🤬 The 2nd half of the video is a prime example of the swiss cheese model and how one minor mistake should have been caught but when events stack like they did, accidents/incidences happen.
It’s cos towards the end no one in the cockpit was flying the plane. The captain left his seat fighting the fire. The F/O was likely unconscious. The autopilot was disconnected and primary flight displays failed due to the fire. So at the end the plane was left on its own.
Am i the only one that finds the father of that girl that passed in swiss air creepy… the first thing he mention was how physically attractive she was… and he left his wife to move to the crash site… yeah the men is a creep for sure.
Now that is almost laughable. The pilot declares and emergency says he dumped the fuel and needs to land immediately. The ATC put him on hold. The pilot again declares an emergency and says he needs to land immediately. The ATC tells him to start dumping fuel. The pilot says he is holding at 300 and ready to land. The ATC again tells him to dump fuel and then let him know when he is done. Then the plane crashes. The ATC says that he did everything he could. Man that is a slap to he face of every one of those victims. Every last one. Granted the plane probably would have crashed anyway but the ATC completely ignoring what the pilot was saying was completely obvious and he does have to own his negligence. The deaths shouldn't be on his shoulders but to say what he did was all he could do is just his attempt to clear his conscious. He was just lucky that plane probably would have crashed anyway and the pilot was extremely negligent with his passengers lives. If you smell a fire and see smoke at 25k feet in the air you should land the damn plane. Declaring Pan and the Fuel dump be damned. Thats a Mayday!! Its not like the passengers can just pull over and get out. They are trusting you with their lives and you are worried about damage to the plane.
You really didn't listen to the events as they unfolded. The PILOT declared they needed to dump fuel and the ATC didn't want them to fly into their own fuel 🤦♀️ they weren't holding at 30k, they were at 8k feet. The pilots should have dumped fuel before defending but they were too busy with their checklist.
My Dad was a check airman on the 777 for United for a long time.. retired now. He used to fly to Delhi, Tel-Aviv, Shanghai, Paris, all over.. He used to say, "If I ever I had an on-board fire while at cruise over the ocean, I'd be making a B-line for the closest piece of land immediately. Also used to joke and say, "When going over the north pole, if there was an engine fire or a dual engine failure, there'd be very I can do".. would be crash landing on Santa's front lawn."
Pilots should be tested/checked for any drugs/narcotic meds/alcohol right before each flight. I dated a pilot and many are alcoholics due to such a stressful job.
It’s quite amazing how many “” mysteries there are considering the fact that these supposedly trained in individuals and the aircraft itself are gone through with a fine tooth comb, and yet these amazing amount of mysteries 😊
As an american, yes he did take part of the cause of the plane crashing. Straight forward and no sugar coating. You dont suggest fuel dump in an emergency. The plane flew with it. It can land with it.
So I understand that experts believe that they would not have been able to make it to Halifax airport no matter what they did differently BUT was there really no other alternative place they could land? A huge field, long roadway, anything on land that could have been better for them? Seemed like such a huge stretch of land between when they noticed smoke and where Halifax airport was.
I love watching this program. I wish more people watched it because it shows that we are humans and demonstrates our great need of God and His Son, Jesus.
In the back of my mind, knowing that the circulating fan towards the rear was pulling the fire towards the back, would it have changed the outcome if the cabin bus remained on?
Definitely. By leaving the cabin bus on, smoke won’t enter the cockpit all at once causing the autopilot and primary flight displays to fail. Unfortunately turning the cabin bus off was one of the checklist items they were performing at that time.
@@RaisedLetter that being said, the reason why captain Sully was a true hero is because he did his job as a CAPTAIN. He wasn’t fixated on the best possible outcome (returning to an airport). If that plane was flown by captain of Swissair 111, I believe the outcome will be very different.

It is so incompetent of these airlines to not train their maintenence workers on things they should and shouldn't do. They should know the consequences and even what a crash would look like due to that. Sometimes, seeing the destruction and dead bodies covered up, is the only thing that will sink in and never be forgotten again!
When you have fire on a plane, you put it down immediately. I can’t believe the captain messed around like this. He could have been safely on the ground. So terribly terribly sad. The air traffic controller did his job, the captain blew it.
I would have commenced dumping fuel the very second it was determined we had a fire onboard and i would have dumped as much fuel as possible ON THE WAY TO THE AIRPORT and taken my chances on whether it was enough. There is NO WAY I would have circled around dumping fuel when there's a fire raging on my plane.
For lost of height and speed I would suggest the app gaia to be use by pilots at least they will have indication of their height and speed. I have tried many times when I am flying and it does not need data

In an emergency, you don't need a checklist especially when you have smoke in the plane. Just land as fast as you can, this is horrible.
I can't believe they expect pilots to pull out a checklist when they're literally on FIRE
@@meghanmisaliar they should have dumped fuel immediately ,then descend to halifax , they would have made it ok ,wasted time of swissair procedure, smoke=land asap, basic rule aviation
Which took 20 long minutes!! The INSANITY!!!🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦@@meghanmisaliar

Accident like these changing many criterias for airline industry.
They should have declared an emergency a long time before they did. Maintaining a Pan Pan Pan status with a smoke filled flight deck?
This was my thought as well.
Indeed.

May all the lost souls rest in peace.
Any aircraft with engines on idle for so long will be decending. amazing these guys didn't realize that.
This incident was a reall illustration of trepidation and fretfulness
The “flying blind” episode is really terrifying, I don’t know about you, but if everything fails, I would resort to using a glass of water to get an idea of what my planes attitude was and use a tube of mercury to get an idea of what my altitude would be, is it primitive? Yes. Will it work when nothing else works? Yes.
the only movement from water you will get, is turbulence & flying inverted i believe.. that could be wrong too, look it up tho, it’s actually crazy..
a lot of people have tried using a half full snow globe of water & it just does not work.. kinda blows my mind the more i think about it

What a tedious and painstaking investigation, well-done. RIP for the innocent souls.

The mechanics, electricians, & all whose job was to make the aircraft safe & sound, did their jobs perfectly.
The flight crew would b perfect.

It's blame shifting, it's unjust, it's objectively wrong, and sadly it seems to get more common every day with people looking for a payday anywhere they can find one.
From a product liability perspective the argument is not frivolous at all!
