Just played this for an Alzheimer’s patient who grew up in Baghdad and she cried remembering how her father loved it. It brought a lot of emotion. I want to learn more about this magnificent singer. Thank you.
She’s the only singer to have reached a near mythical status in the arab world. Her voice is unparalleled and her ability to convey emotions and the power she has to to go from deep to high notes and all those amazing vibratos, riffs, and belting is almost impossible to find in one voice. This has made her immensely talented that the King of Egypt gave her the name ‘Star of the Orient’ and later received several titles like Egypt’s First Lady. Music reaches the deepest parts of the human mind and is always synonymous with a memory which could explain why she remembers a certain event.
The first time I listened to this, I cried instantly. And the man who let me listened to it is now my husband. May we found love in this temporary world, amin ya rabb.
I am Chinese and lived in the Middle East for part of my life. Arabic music truly touches the soul. I need to study it, for it is a beautiful language.
An elderly friend of mine (bless his soul) introduced me to Umm Kulthum. We would listen to her music while sipping black tea and talk for hours. He would come alive and reminisce. He had a thousand stories for every song. We would laugh and sometimes cry. He would often tell me how he wished I understood Arabic because he could not find the English words to make me feel the true emotion in the poetry...I still listen to Umm Kulthum and remember my friend, Mahmoud... I miss him dearly.

I was born in Belgium but my backrgound is Moroccan, when I was young I didn't like it that my parents always played her music at home (because I didnt understand it). Now, I understand what a precious lady she was and that her voice reached million hearts. This woman is one of the most respected singers that the earth has ever know.
my father tells me of how his own father would hold his old stereo to his chest, close to his heart whenever umm kulthum was playing. she is revered so dearly by so many people all over the middle east, and she means so much to all of us. her legacy will never die ❤️
I was born in Alexandria, we left, pushed out, in 1959, but my love for Alexandria and Um Kalthum is ingrained inside me. I grew up with her voice and that voice followed me. A great UM, mother.
I was blessed to have seen her right before she passed away. I was studying in Cairo. I had to go see the woman that my father listened to for my whole life. I'm glad I did. She was magnificent. May she rest in peace.

Hi Friend this might interest you , the egyptians invented the violin the grandfather of the violin is the rababa. No wonder that the string section is so beautiful
I am an Ethiopian. The Egyptian did not invent any thing. Ancient Egyptions invaded the Nubian land and took over every thing. All civilizations attributed to Egyptians actually belong to Nubians. That said, the Muslim scholars of Egypt are the real scholars equipped with authentic knowledge of the religion. The Islamic world needs the Muslim scholars of Al-azhar for example for learning the right interpretations.
+Abbas Abdulselam Did the Nubians also invent the pyramids? Since you say that "all civilizations (sic!) attributed to Egyptians actually belong to Nubians". I'm not saying they didn't, just don't remember Ethiopia pictured as all that civilized in Ryzsard Kapucsinski's The Emperor.
"toobalkain" it is well known that the majority of the people in Egypt are not the natives. They are late comers and some people say they came from Spain or similar "light skin" dominated nations. The natives have always been Nubians who's were forced to reside at the boarder of Egypt. There is no doubt that Nubians did build the pyramids. Who else could it be?
I am an Iranian listener , how can i express myself about Ommekolthum ? I fly with her song , I can,t remember my eyes not sheding tears when I listen to Anta Omri , she is the best for ever , I mean for ever . Biahan

Wonderful a great lady will live in my heart my Mom had a voice like our Sweet lady She will be in my heart and Mom you can’t find any one that is incredible like Umm Koulthoum love her for ever❤️❤️❤️❤️
She's the only singer in the world who always kept about one yard (~ 1 meter) distance from the microphone during her performances. Yes, she was so great that at her passing, millions of people were grieving. The Arabic speaking world called her "Kaoukab el Sharq" meaning the "Orient Star". Some memories!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a beautiful song !! is a poetry... I hope in my life to be able to live the experience of true love, reflected in the eyes of my lover... Umm Kulthum was a great singer. She had a beatifull and powerfull voice. “Kawkab el-Shark”
Her ability to produce approximately 14,000 vibrations per second with her vocal cords, her unparalleled vocal strength (no commercial microphone utilized for singing could withstand its strength, forcing her to stand at a 1- to 3-meter radius away from one wow wow she was a legend
Awais Khan in 1978 I bought her famous lp in Egypt.. Alf Leila. She is taller than the Sahara dunes.that are reflected in all the music. Also Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is on this honor list. Love is universal.
MuzikJunkyAES well, actually there’s a story behind that. It’s not only because of the proximity effect, actually whenever the mic was closer to her mouth, the mic stops woking because of how strong her sound was. Can believe that she broke mics like that before she were a professional singer!!!
Back then, it was a required craftsmanship for every singer or actor on stage. Artists also had to reach the audience at the back of a theater, of course... It is said, Umm Kulthum never needed any lessons to make such a volume. Even without a microphone and singing with a full orchestra. Her voice was very powerful by nature.
Her voice is otherworldly, and the music of the composer (Abdel Wahab) is timelessly masterful. A beautiful combo of the greatest vocals of Egypt and of one of the greatest composers of all time (IMO).
Excuse me and excuse me some more. Her runs, riffs are chill-inspiring. This is a special anointing. The way she enunciates is wonderful and her intonation (and I'm a music student studying Classical music in America) her intonation is perfect. She either has perfect pitch or I dunno. To think she could put so much into her music as a CONTRALTO blows my mind. She truly is the Songbird of the East.

Unparalleled. She was in a league of her own. Enta Omri will forever live on as a gem in egyptian culture and one of many masterpieces in her illustrious catalog.
What a Song !! The way she renders it !! Its Phenomenol !! Ummu Koulthum is a Legend and will always be the No.1 Female Arab Singer of All Time ! No one can ever replace Her. With lots of Love from India.
One of the very very few singers to have such an impact with her voice. No wonder so many people have no idea what she's saying but are still in awe. Forever the Godmother of all middle eastern female singers.
I just played this in my music appreciation class in college. My classmates kept asking me when is it gonna end. This generation don't like complicated art. They want easy mainstream music so their undeveloped mind can digest it.
As someone who belongs to this generation who grew up in Berlin, Germany to a Kurdish family I agree !! I speak 6 languages (German, English, French, Turkish, Arabic and Kurdish) and the first 3s music isn‘t comparable to the 3 last as they want easy texts and simple melodies. In Turkey pop culture is mostly westernized, too. Those classics are not enough appreciated
What a shame! They didn't appreciate this masterpiece, I'm Mexican and I love Arab music, I can't even speak Arabic, Fairuz, Sabah and Umm are my favorites, they can touch my soul with their music❤ greetings from Mexico.
She performed 1 cosert the last Thursday of every month . She sang two or three new songs in each consert . This went on for 40 years .The Arab world would tune in to listen to her . Her live concerts were what kept people going through what ever it was they were struggling with . She was part of their lives . In many ways she still is . After all these years not 1 entertainer can compete .My father was the one who introduced me to her music when I was 14 . He called me to the living room 'Come quick' ! When I got there he held my hand and pulled me to sit on the rug ',which is an Arab tradition, and pointed to the radio ! And I listened to UM Kalthoum singing 'Rubaiyat Alkhayam' for the first time .I had a culture shock !I had never experienced anything like it .People talk about having once in a lifetime experiences. Well ,it was nothing short of a miracle. It is a song originally written by a famous Persian Poet and then translated to Arabic and performed by UM Kalthoum . It is about a Muslim Mystic dicribing his love for GOD . I can't explain it ,but Arabic poetry combined with music and intrudced by UM Kalthoum is unparalleled . Allah Yirhamha . 🤲💗 My Allah have mercy on her soul .💗🤲
may Our Creator of All That Is, Allah SW rest her amazing Soul to Jannatul Firdaus for giving so many hearts happiness through her voice. Everytime i listen to her, tears comes out. No wonder my Mum named my sister after her he he. Mashaa Allah. I wanna do a tribute to this song. Sing it live the way She did for 2 hours...I wanna sing this...In Shaa Allah it will happen one day...spread the word people he he. Peace with you all
In case you didn’t know her, Um Kulthoom is *The Arab World’s Greatest Singer of All Time* ! Almost every major Arab singer is influenced by her music. People still listen to her records to this day.
I am Russian and have no connection to this culture, but I absolutely adore her singing and I feel her emotions. She is truly wonderful and one of the greatest singers in the world.
Umm Kalthum gives me shivers every time I hear her voice. No one is even close to her. I did not see anyone composing the orchestra or were they hidden away from camera.
all this while, ive been listening to Sherine and Nacy Ajram's songs...never heard of Umm kulthum till one day I saw an article about her in Malaysia's newspaper... now i know why she is still the most unforgettable legend...her voice is so powerful and so magical... she is not singing but SERENADING instead...i love the lyrics of this song, so touching...will never stop listening to this...it will be my lifetime wasted..lolz..regard from malaysia...
What an expressive and emotional voice! And how graceful are the lyrics! Absolutely in love with this song, gives me chills every time. Love from Turkey❤️
Music that hits the soul directly. This is a voice that will transport you directly to the cafes of Cairo, to the essence of Middle Eastern beauty … there is no comparison to Umm Kulthum, the fourth pyramid of Egypt ❤

I'm so proud to find this in other cultures, I'm syrian, I'm the biggest fan of Oum Koulthum, I learned all her music's on guitar, I listening to her since 1999 , she is my favorite of all the time, her voice touched me so deep, she talk about all love steps in all her songs, from the beginning of love to breakup, I hope you guys to listen her songs before falling in love with someone, she will teach you everything about it, and she will say a very deep words, that words are inside all of us, but all of us can't explain and saying this words, but Oum Koulthum had said all of it, she will tell you about all your feelings, she will make you cry, she will give you a lessons about love and life, this woman is the best human of all the time.💜
You are right @MrFahodd...., her generation of singers had to reach the back of the audience also. ~No real P.A. sound system & some say she could even whisper on stage, for everyone to hear in the concert hall.
Ah , the jewel of the Middle East . This woman never died in our hearts . All arabs will keep her in their hearts and listen to her beautiful timeless voice for all eternity
As beautiful and sublime her voices is praise must also be given to the amazing musicians who are playing on point and doing a fabulous job to accompany madam Oum Kalthoum.

They're never gone as long as they're in our mind and heart. May your father ret in peace.

I was born in Belgium but my backrgound is Moroccan, when I was young I didn't like it that my parents always played her music at home (because I didnt understand it). Now, I understand what a precious lady she was and that her voice reached million hearts. This woman is one of the most respected singers that the earth has ever know.
Same for me

è tutta suggestione, è una palla enorme ed un lamento arabo !
OUM never was" among" . She was unique and incomparable, and to date we are still waiting another to come close to her. But rubbish! A lot
my father tells me of how his own father would hold his old stereo to his chest, close to his heart whenever umm kulthum was playing. she is revered so dearly by so many people all over the middle east, and she means so much to all of us. her legacy will never die ❤️
Just remembering her in concert in Beyrouth in 1968 ! There were thousands of people and it was so beautiful.........
Jeanne Parmentier Do you mind sharing that experience? I truly would love to know how one experiences the presence of such amazing woman.
Safiye Sultan fr! I would also love to know her experience
Lucky you Jeannne.. my dream always is to be in one of her concert.
Her age was 70years old
You are so lucky
Umm Kalthoum is arguably the best singer in the history of mankind. Not many artists are widely known and listened over 4 generations.
I was born in Alexandria, we left, pushed out, in 1959, but my love for Alexandria and Um Kalthum is ingrained inside me. I grew up with her voice and that voice followed me. A great UM, mother.
Georgiou Evangelos why pushed out? Are you jewish
No yunani Greek, but after the suez war of 1956 nationalism in Egypt was at its highest and all non Arab were pushed out. So sad
Georgiou Evangelos
Yea that revolution fd up everything
Naser is a polarizing figure. To me he ruined Egypt. He's like the Hugo Chavez of Egypt.
You are one of us pal. Egypt is your country and you're always welcome here, Georgiue.
I’m from Delaware in America and I’m rocking to this! My mom is black and she used to play this music for me growing up.
I was blessed to have seen her right before she passed away. I was studying in Cairo. I had to go see the woman that my father listened to for my whole life. I'm glad I did. She was magnificent. May she rest in peace.

This music is phenomenal. The musicians use no sheet music, the rhythms, the melodies...all in sync. There is even a cellist!
They are late comers
and some people say they came from Spain or similar "light skin" dominated nations. The natives have always been Nubians who's were forced to reside at the boarder of Egypt. There is no doubt that Nubians did build the pyramids. Who else could it be?
hahahhhahaahahahahahhahahahhahahahahah the funniest thing i have read in a while , cheers for that.

She's the only singer in the world who always kept about one yard (~ 1 meter) distance from the microphone during her performances. This is a beautiful song !! is a poetry... I hope in my life to be able to live the experience of true love, reflected in the eyes of my lover... Umm Kulthum was a great singer. She had a beatifull and powerfull voice. “Kawkab el-Shark”
Her ability to produce approximately 14,000 vibrations per second with her vocal cords, her unparalleled vocal strength (no commercial microphone utilized for singing could withstand its strength, forcing her to stand at a 1- to 3-meter radius away from one
wow wow she was a legend
I'm from Pakistan and i listen this 100 times.it makes me tears
Awais Khan in 1978 I bought her famous lp in Egypt.. Alf Leila. She is taller than the Sahara dunes.that are reflected in all the music.
Also Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is on this honor list.
Love is universal.
you woudn't beleive it. that was in 1968 and she was 70 years old. just look how far is the mic from her mouth !!
Is SHOULD be that far away from ANYONE, otherwise you get the proximity effect-popping the Ps, etc. Peace.
@@MondeEclectique, no, she died in 1974 at age 76. Peace.
MuzikJunkyAES well,actually there’s a story behind that.
It’s not only because of the proximity effect, actually whenever the mic was closer to her mouth, the mic stops woking because of how strong her sound was.
Can believe that she broke mics like that before she were a professional singer!!!
Her voice was too strong her voice burned a mic once in Lebanon that's why they used to put mic a little far from her ❤
Back then, it was a required craftsmanship for every singer or actor on stage. Artists also had to reach the audience at the back of a theater, of course...
It is said, Umm Kulthum never needed any lessons to make such a volume. Even without a microphone and singing with a full orchestra. Her voice was very powerful by nature.
The way she pronounced the word "ya hayat" at 7:10- 7:14 is DIVINE! Out of this world
Yup with No professional mic or equipment nor the recording it's one life time voice
@@IYSROFILDivine. Miraculous
I've been hooked on Oum Kalthoum's music since I visited Morocco back in 1984! I think that this is my favorite of all of her songs.
Umm Kulthum one of the most important singers in Egypt and the Arab world and We are happy that you liked the song after translated to English
Her voice is otherworldly, and the music of the composer (Abdel Wahab) is timelessly masterful. A beautiful combo of the greatest vocals of Egypt and of one of the greatest composers of all time (IMO).
I am Indian, saw the performance Umm Kulthum and Omar Sharif. Then wanted to check out who it was and here I am! Mindblown!
And you are much welcome @Maryorra, so the spirit of Umm Kulthum lives on forever!

Always beautiful and so beautiful the world of Egypt!
Une étoile qui brillera pour toujours dans notre mémoire !
One of the very very few singers to have such an impact with her voice. No wonder so many people have no idea what she's saying but are still in awe. Forever the Godmother of all middle eastern female singers.
that's so sad , because the lyrics of her songs are better than her voice
Everyone knows that Bob Dylan names her as his favorite singer? Talk about universal!
I DONT THINK YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT .
THE LADY HAS A WONDERFULL VOICE.
She is the godmother of all Arabic females singer not only Middle East

Probably The Greatest Female Singer of All Time
The best arabic singer ever
I don't speak Arabic either. But her emotion is undeniable and universal . Thank you for the post. I am so drawn in by her passion.
My Allah have mercy on her soul .💗🤲
