    Note: The speed limit on gravel roads is 80km/h and not 70km/h as shown in the video. I apologize for the mistake.

    Icelander here. Thank you for mentioning the prohibited things such as off-roading since it is a big problem here. We have a unique country, but every time someone drives of the beaten path it reduces the value of our experience while traveling; tourist or native.

    My wife and I were in Iceland 16 days last year (Sept - Oct, 2019). We were in Reykjavik seven days and drove to areas east and west of the city the other nine. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the trip, and I look forward to returning in a few years to travel the entire Ring Road. I would like to schedule up to four weeks for that trip, just to hang out/explore for several days at places along the road. I have been to a great many countries, and Iceland ranks very near the top of my list of places I have visited.

    I’m going to Iceland in 48 hours and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve rewatched this video over the months leading up to the trip. I appreciate that he shows great respect for the country. The video doesn’t feel like a gimmicky “tourism ad” or “self-centered vlogging”. He speaks and shows more about the country than he does about himself. The video, photography, audio and production is top notch. Sometimes I just play the video in the background while doing tasks. It’s oddly comforting and relaxing.

      I hope you had a great time at Iceland.. Is it far away to go from one place to another.. is it long drive? How many hotels dhould we go to if we want to go to the same places he wentvto.. I’m so confused.. I hope it is easy because we are planning on to go next june for not more than 8 days.

      @@Fijiispsradise
      It depends.
      Planning your trip should start with what you intend to do and when you intend to visit. Winter is different from summer and spring. In winter many parts of the Ring Road are closed and certain activities are not available. Naturally summer is the busiest and costliest time of the year and you have access to most of the amenities and locations. After winter, everything is bathed in a brown hue as most of the vegetation has died. It’s still beautiful in its own right but it’s not the lush greenery you may be hoping to see.
      If you intend to play tourist; then the Diamond Circle and staying near Reykjavik would suit you. It’s a one day tour and there are things to keep you entertained near the city. Personally, I feel you need to leave the city and the Diamond Circle to see the real Iceland.
      If you intend to be more adventurous; then The Ring Road as a road trip is one option. This usually takes 7-15 days depending on the sites and stops. You can opt to do it through a Tour Company, or on your own like I did.
      - TOUR COMPANY PROS: Planning a Ring Road trip is much much easier - you pay and they handle the rest. Traveling with a group can have its benefits, especially if you’re traveling alone. You make friends along the way.
      - TOUR COMPANY CONS: You pay extra for upgrades like having your own room and private bath as a lot of the accommodations they select may be shared with other guests on the trip. They select the sites and locations, so they may skip a specific spot you really wanted to visit. You’re herded like sheep everywhere and you lose your autonomy to do as you please when you visit certain sites. When it’s time to get back on the bus, it’s time to get back on the bus. You’re constantly traveling to every location with a group of people. However, there’s always a group of people at every popular site, but if you arrive early you can skip the crowds, but that isn’t something you can do when you’re a part of a tour group.
      - MAKING YOUR OWN PLANS PROS: Freedom to select exactly what you’d like to do, go where you want to go and stay as long as you like. You can avoid being herded in a crowd everywhere you go. You can book your own private accommodations. You can arrive to popular sites before the crowds and enjoy the scenery. You can travel with friends/family/solo, rather than random people you are not familiar with.
      - MAKING YOUR OWN PLANS CONS: It’s more of a hassle planning everything yourself, especially if it’s your first visit. I spent 2 months watching every video I could find to plan my trip, so I felt confident making my own plans. Not everyone will feel this way. It’s also going to cost the same as a tour or slightly more. So you may consider booking a tour for a similar price and not deal with the hassle. Since you’re traversing the country on your own, you have to be more vigilant. Learn the rules of the road, navigate on your own, avoid taking the wrong turns and adapting to driving on and in different terrains and weather. This means you need to know what to pack, and what car to rent. When in doubt opt for an SUV that can handle all terrain. It is the costliest option however. I rented a standard sedan and planned my trip to avoid any F-Roads. Taking all of this and much more into consideration can be a bit daunting if it’s your first time, but that’s why it’s adventurous and I was up for the challenge. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip and had no major hiccups.
      If you choose to be a local during your stay, then you can spent your trip staying in one of the towns outside of Reykjavik. This is probably the cheapest option. The most you’ll spend is on accommodation and getting to and from the airport. You can visit the sites near the town or choose to venture out a little. The further you venture out, the more it’ll cost you, because you’ll likely have to rent a car or book a tour for this.
      To answer your questions directly: Some places are close to each other and some are far. It really just depends on what you plan to see and whether you intend to do the entire Ring Road or just a part of the island. Naturally, places in the city are much closer. Sites in the Diamond Circle are closer, as it’s a smaller area of the island (30mins - 1.5hrs apart). Places on the Ring Road can be 30mins to 3 or 4 hours apart. It all depends.
      What you plan to see will determine whether you stay. I basically spent the entire day sightseeing and checked into my hotel at the end of each day. Each site I drove to throughout the day brought me closer to my hotel. So I basically booked a different accommodation for each day. That’s a tight schedule but it worked for me. Others may choose to take things at a slower paced and spend a day or two at their accommodations. This will of course extend your time and increase your costs… Be prepared to do a lot of driving if you intend to do the Ring Road. Easiest way to estimate your driving times in advance is to pull up the locations on Google Maps and add the total driving times between each stop. I then factored in 1-2 hrs for sightseeing at each site and that’s how I planned and calculated the time I needed for my entire Ring Road trip in advance.

    I just got back from Iceland yesterday and definitely fell in love with the country. When you are on the coat, anywhere you point your camera is a postcard picture. It looks like you went in the summer. It is supposed to be spring now, but they are experiencing a lot of wintery weather and we nearly missed out on the south coast as the road to Vik being closed due to snow storms in the night. Luckily they opened it again at 2 pm, so was worth waiting extra time at Skogafoss and Kvernufoss falls until the passage reopened. I'd like to return in the summer, just to see how the landscape colours change in the new season. Watching this made me feel a little home sick for Iceland and it isn't even my home. Great video

    I did the Ring Road this last July 2019 with my 15 year old daughter. It was a little hurried of an itinerary for us due to time restraints, but we managed in 6 days and spent the final 2 days in Reykavik (8 days in the country total). When I go back, I'll either make sure that I have a full 10-12 days (or more if I do the entire Ring Road again) or ... stay in one region and explore all that it has to offer.
    This video is very well done. I think that you covered all the important items for people who are planning a trip there. I did a lot of research prior to my own trip, and I was wondering how I missed this video, but I see that you recently put it out - so there's my explanation :) Good job! Safe travels to you.

    • @andyngeow
      @andyngeow 5 років тому

      Yup, 8 days definately not enough. My last visit was November 2017, 8 days for ring road + Reykjavik & Grundarfjörður, end up everyday driving in the dark night without scenery (sunset at 4:30pm)

    • @rob442
      @rob442 5 років тому

      @@randomstuff-p5m - yes for sure. I had limited time but it ended up working out alright. It was basically and epic road trip and on each daily leg we made sure that we stopped at as many sites as possible before getting to our accommodations each evening. I'd probably stay in the SE region next time I go and just venture out from an Air B&B daily (used as a home base) ... and do a different nearby adventure each day (next time)...
