Korey Burns if I told you I made this beat would you call bullshit? I went by Math then. Made it in like 30 min w him in room. The second half was from a different beat for a compilation. El is my fav artist of all time. So it’s def not a high point. Haha
Korey Burns I didn’t really get caught up in the specifics. But El-p recorded a few convos between Len and Tim (Sole). It def put Soles name out there more than I’d ever expected.
Tim Thurman this diss was decent, but alot of his points make no sense, like trying to say that he's more cerebral and has a bigger vocabulary than El. very few rappers alive can match El's vocabulary.
Pretty much Sole could. Look at them now...Sole is pretty much the most cerebral person I listen to; while EL-P is still fighting petty issues...Sole is tackling real mindsets and ideologies.
Are you sure your not letting El-Ps flows go over your head bruh? When I hear El-p rhymes they're in triplicate and hes talking about all kinds of issues and shit in negative space like he actually once said in one of his lines I guess. I would never go up against EL-P for no good reason willingly..but if i did i know I would have to come better than this track does. I'd have to try to make him dig deep for the references to him, so he could at least respect that im not a being a 1 dimensional rapper.

I was on the ground for this whole beef, rivalry, etc. Internet and cellphones were just going widespread. No social media really. Here’s how I experienced it and what I’ve always felt... Most of the comments about who won are pretty retroactive and seen thru the rose-colored glasses of El-p’s later success, whether Def Jux or (especially) RTJ. At the time, I can tell you firsthand that, unless you were geographically aligned with CoFlow’s NY-centric brand of independent hip hop, you most likely sided with Sole and Anticon. I’m from Milwaukee and went to school at UW in Madison, WI. Countless cities just like those were Anticon strongholds because those guys were on the road, in those places, hand to hand, killing shows all the time. I remember talking to Slug (who was on Deep Puddle Dynamics AND hip hop for the advanced listener BUT was not exactly “riding” with the whole Anticon thing and was friends with El and Aes and that camp) and even he was like Sole Got Him. Linda Tripp is good but oblique. Dear Elpee bitchslaps El directly and repeatedly. As an MC battle comparison? SOLE WINS.
Thanks for this awesome comment. It seems 90s heads appreciated lyricism more back then. Today it's all about haymaker punchlines, which is the only thing El-P had over Sole. In the form of an audio recording
I remember one of my friends from Hartford went on a date with El-p and he had done some ecstasy or something and he just cried on her couch the whole night.
On a battle tip.. had it not been for the phone call, Sole would have BODIED El-P. Love both of them. This track stood the test of time never saw Sole as much of a puncher but he's got some haymakers on this track.
Of course El-P won he had a studio backed track off a major record label. I’ve never heard a single by Sole on the top 100 but I been listening since ‘98 heavy. He killed him on the first line “Anticon the cold clash catalyst for cataclysm”. Need I say more?
Everybody knows that this whole beef started because El-P is insecure about being a ginger emcee and he's too scared to battle black people so he went after the only other ginger emcee he could find. (This was before Macklemore BTW). Sole is a savage and he's leagues beyond El when it comes to lyricism. Wish he was still recording...
i think soles response was much more intellectual. Im a huge El-P fan btw, and thats your opinion. but IMHO ....its far more difficult to respond in an eloquent manner rather than pure savagery. And for that, i give the W to Sole. 5 yrs ago i would have said otherwise,in fact i was a bandwagon hater of Sole after i heard L.Tripp but after yrs of watching Sole and Anticons popularity flourish ....after the Infamous Slaying From El Producto himself , it seems the diss did exactly the opposite of what was intended. Sole and his supposed "Wack" label slingshotted to some of the most influential artists of hiphop times.
Final Verdict EL P wins FATALITY Sole had some decent bars but can't exactly put a burnin' match to a flamin' torch. Battles I would like to see: -Apathy & Esoteric VS Brother Ali & Slug -Aesop Rock VS Illogic -Murs VS Busdriver -Gift of Gab VS RA The Rugged Man -Madchild, Black Thought, & Vinnie Paz VS Aceyalone, Vast Aire, & Eyedea
Only? It was a major factor. Bar for bar I consider this a superior diss but Linda Tripp was fucking...humiliation. I like it musically more though but both of these are fire. You rarely get a beef where both sides are dope.
Jon Reed this song was dope as well, but linda tripp is on another level. The lyrics were a little bit more superior in linda tripp, but not that much of a gap
Always been a huge fan of El-p and company flow. I have the admit sole did his thing on this track. Linda trip was ok but this was my shit. Still love El-p and run the jewels is the second coming and all that but every once in a while I’ll throw this on and let’s like I’m 16 again on the train with a huge marker in my hand.
Sole was never going to win this. He had a unique style for the times, but he labeled his character as too far of an outsider. It's like his whole character was based on rebelling against the culture that gave him a platform. Where as, El-P single handedly created a space for the subculture of underground rap music that allowed artists like Sole to potentially thrive; however short lived their legacy. Unfortunately for Sole, he bit the hand that feeds, and this back and forth with EL-P is all his legacy really amounts to now a days. Even with his classic Bottle of Humans that really caught a lot of aficionados off guard, he will really only be remembered for this. It's a tough break, but it was certain doom for Sole as soon as the idea to diss EL-P popped in his head.
I’m glad he rebelled. It brought something different with Anticon and people like Dose One who made a statement that you didn’t have to be a backpacker dun or cool to be into Hip Hop. They showed that there’s so much more you can do with the music and to anyone who likes the Anticon label and really knows, dear elpee will be the least he’s remembered for.
Um...Linda Tripp by itself more than held its own. Never mind all El-P did with CoFlow prior, Def Jux after, and even RTJ after that. So yeah.... I'm a fan of Sole and Anticon too, but to say he never recovered is kind of ridiculous.😊
One of the best Hip Hop beefs of all time, 2 tracks with killer beats, killer lyrics. Off course EL-P won, whoever says otherwise doesnt know shit about hip hop. The phone call thing was ridiculous. But the beat to this track is insane
The phone call was chopped up and extremely misleading lol, it doesn't at all tell you how the conversation actually went and leaves out a lot of stuff
I like both artist, but after listening to the content of sole's lyrics, his metaphor and similes cut deep. Obviously present day it doesn't matter because it's some beef that lasted for such a short while 8+ years ago. I don't think they're still enemies or have beef. It's like after the whole ordeal it was settled and just went along with their business.
@Kit Duguay It's pretty damn funny that Sole was talking all that shit about El-P blackballing him and El-P was like "Who the fuck even are you?" I like this track, and Sole's a great lyricist, but he really played himself by being open about chasing clout. Like the "Is it live suckers" thing on the CoFlow track was a clear reference to Run-DMC.
Sole and Anticon is dope. Problem is, despite Sole has a sick flow and beats, El is mad original. Funcrusher proved that damn near twenty years ago. Go listen to "Sole - Learning To Walk." It's a collection of unreleased tracks by Sole from 94-98. Sole recycles verses, which is okay if you're in a freestyle battle. You just can't use the line "hamburger pimp, only out for the cheddar" in something you were supposed to writh "fresh." Big up to El-P and Sole. Grew up on them both.
This guy silent...the only time I heard of him was el str8 shittin on him...then jus to b sure...I peep this...I'm lik yo...get this guy a pizza...make it a TOOOMBSTOOONE😋
i'm a huge fan of both artists, but musically speaking i still think this song is alot better than linda trip.. the beat, the flow, everything.. linda trip sounds like a half assed attempt, and if it wasn't for the phone call what content would el-p have for a response? nothing.. sole literally GAVE it to el-p with that phone call..
@cjcollas ''when sole was trying to be an evolved human and move forward'' did you actually hear ''Linda Tripp? He's pretty much begging not to be dissed. Sole tried to build a carrer by dissing El-P, and it backfired. If he didn't pussied out and went kissing El-P's ass he would have won the beef. And i think ''Dear Elpee'' is before the phonecall.
Except it didn't end his career. In fact it did the opposite. His career launched after Linda Tripp. This beef happened leading up the bottle of humans album.
Fuck that shit ! First and foremost this is old, I understand and this isn't about picking sides. I'm a big Deep Puddle Dynamic fan and Sole has some of my favorite verses on that joint, that being said, aside from thoroughly enjoying this track. I still love Linda Tripp as a song much better but that just preference. All MCs and Men have is their word. But when that man acts on the bitch side, that kinda cancels out their word. It's ok soul, I'd wanna be down with co flow too
El-P smoked this foo in the rebuttal. " I feel like selena, the president of my own fanclub wants to kill me" among every other line in there. No comparison.
EL P played sole like a bitch "I don't want to be against you guys I wanna be down" but credit where credit is due this is an ok song. "No I don't think you sound very scared"
No, the beef was about Sole originally feeling that El-P was preventing him from getting proper distribution, particularly with places like Fat Beats. How the fuck has El-P "sold out"? Has he suddenly started making pop music, did I miss that? Did he alter the content or sound of his songs in order to make more money? Because that would be the definition of selling out. The dude is on Fat Possum Records, how is that a major label? They're distributed by fucking RED and INgrooves. Learn.
hey desarollo - elp has a pathetic verses in linda tripp. all he does is claims sole is a huge fan of his then braggs about all his industry acomplishments. sole says brutally honest things about elps lack of production and rapping abilities. i pick sole hands down winner and im not crazy into sole. but you must be one of those kids that think hip hop is all about beef and not creativity and cleaverness. pease
nah, sole probably wanted to kill himself after he got exposed in that phone conversation. i mean lets be real...one of the lines sole said in this was "i hear you have an instrumental album made pots pans and sitars". really? im pretty sure that diss would be applied to his crew anticon before el-p, lol. i guess sole its familiar with the music that comes from his very own label, lol.
na he thought he was dissed BEFORE the end to end burners 12, that's why it says across the top of the record sleeve "to all the fans that fantasize that we're dissing them specifically... sorry to dissapoint [sic]... If that time ever comes you'll know. In the mean time you're embarassing yourselves..." and the line "diss me on the internet like picket line crossing teamsters" so sole got all upset and tried to come back on the perceived beef.... fail.
sole has some good energy in his music, but the guy can't rhyme. i'll be listening to one of his songs and it'll just stop rhyming for a minute or two. like wtf, if i just wanted to hear aimless rambling, i'd call my parents more often. but like i said, i've seen worse.
mabey im a bit of a crab but that's not the reason i'm siding with sole. I dont think soles actions fit the defenition of hypocracy exactly. saying one thing then DOING another is hipocracy. Saying varying things is called "changing you'r fucking mind cuz someone wants to fuck you up".
if an over the phone confrontation wins a rap battle..... el p won. if rapping wins... i vote for sole . as for how crazy phone calls could get that wasn't shit. So sole lied though his teeth and said " i wanna be down with you" after he made a dis track. whats the big deal?
@GnomesAmok But nobody ever slept on Sole. Soles flow was nice but he killed himself with the phone recording man. EL-P didn't automaticly win he won because of one of the best underground diss tracks ever made...No one told sole to say all of that anyways that makes him a sucker.
not that its relevant, but that line Sole has, "Had a crayon contest with retarted kids and picked the wackest album cover"...ummm has anyone seen the "Bottle of Humans" album cover? just a thought.
its funny, i still havent listened to any of sole's shit because of el-p's response (dear elpee was completely inferior)....i probably oughtta start checking sole tho
its obviously nice but it winds up being irritating and drowns out his delivery I just wanna say: "stfu dude its over" (which I know isn't fair because this came out before the rebuttal but thats what I'm saying..its my reaction to the track itself not even related to the comebacks)while I''m listening which is bad because I can kinda hear that he has some decent lines..Also..its good that as he states that he isn't trying to compete with El Ps production skills if this beat(as decent as it is) is any indication. El-p should have donated him a beat just to see if he could really flow up on his level for real.
Sole slaughtered El-P. El-P only had the recorded snippets the bars was wack, Sole has mad haymakers on this. It's popular to think El-P won, but in bars? Sole got that easy.
this wasn't a comeback to linda tripp.... he thought he was dissed on the end to end burners 12", so he made this track. linda tripp was a comeback to dear elpee.
shit i was looking for this forever sole isn't bad, but el-p is a much better rapper AND produces as well. i'm down with anticon, just moreso with def jux, imo we need as many decent underground rappers as possible.
Matt Hayes they were on an independent label. then when rawkus tried to act like a major, El went on to create his own indie label. he's never signed to a major label. that's "independent as fuck"

yo this is intrepid, dawg. el-p thinks he's prog rap. ha.
#valid
This is a good diss. But he folded hard. And that cost him.
I own and love this track but Linda Tripp is a career ending diss.
Except it didn't end his career. In fact it did the opposite. His career launched after Linda Tripp. This beef happened leading up the bottle of humans album.
@@mercurialblondeSole?
"youre a hamburger pimp, only out for the cheddar" 😂 what?!
... what? El-P was down with Vordul before Sole even talked about it...
Lol the studio punch-ins line and the wigger line are devastating. No one here can deny Sole’s raw talent
I wanna be down
Vs El-p's linda tripp,
That voice recording killed him
"...i love company flow, i wanna be down"
Sofar destruction goes, he got annihilated.
☆Hardest War Ever...Check El-P Response With Sole Getting Taped..‼️🥶🔥🥶‼️
EL P played sole like a bitch "I don't want to be against you guys I wanna be down" but credit where credit is due this is an ok song. "No I don't think you sound very scared"
sole is the people's el-p
This track is bananas
Lmao sole's character is suspect at best. Straight chump. The beat was cool tho haha
its funny, i still havent listened to any of sole's shit because of el-p's response (dear elpee was completely inferior)....i probably oughtta start checking sole tho
@sdkt411 haha whats the big deal? you have respect for a guy who can't man up to what he said so he has to lie because he is scared of the outcome?
Lmao sole's character is suspect at best. Straight chump. The beat was cool tho haha
its obviously nice but it winds up being irritating and drowns out his delivery I just wanna say: "stfu dude its over" (which I know isn't fair because this came out before the rebuttal but thats what I'm saying..its my reaction to the track itself not even related to the comebacks)while I''m listening which is bad because I can kinda hear that he has some decent lines..Also..its good that as he states that he isn't trying to compete with El Ps production skills if this beat(as decent as it is) is any indication. El-p should have donated him a beat just to see if he could really flow up on his level for real.
Sole.. aww bless, he gave it a go.. but despite his obvious ability, he doesn't have the charisma and intensity of El-P... so.. losing!
Sole slaughtered El-P. El-P only had the recorded snippets the bars was wack, Sole has mad haymakers on this. It's popular to think El-P won, but in bars? Sole got that easy.
He tried....
FIRE beat tho!
this wasn't a comeback to linda tripp.... he thought he was dissed on the end to end burners 12", so he made this track. linda tripp was a comeback to dear elpee.
God I hated anticon. Probably the worst movement in hip hop. I'd rather listen to soulja boy...seriously
Sole isn't really all that good at freestyles... His writtens however are tightly interwoven...
Really? Wow. Going against EL-P with a song like this, not a way to start a career.
Beat is fire
Zack galafinakis and Haley Joel Osment had a baby and named him Sole
Yeah, and El-p's father is Tim Hidecker :]]
this shit is a pretty good diss, i can't lie but he brought it about just to get some recognition. el-p SMASHED him to pieces
i think when el flipped the "underground canibus and LL" line by saying "you musta thought you was canibus trying to eat my ass" was pretty clever
shit i was looking for this forever
sole isn't bad, but el-p is a much better rapper AND produces as well. i'm down with anticon, just moreso with def jux, imo we need as many decent underground rappers as possible.
Sole hit el-p like teddy bears thrown against wooden doors
by a misunderstood teenage girl in a moment of self importance
nope. he's not the best. but he's better than sole, lol.
the only problem with this is that it's like, total shit
El P killed him but this went hard idgaf - nobody went at el producto like this, period.
Why perpetuate malapropism? A good question.
Co Flow was never as independent as they said. Anticon always was. El-P was the better lyricist though.
Matt Hayes they were on an independent label. then when rawkus tried to act like a major, El went on to create his own indie label. he's never signed to a major label. that's "independent as fuck"
Matt Hayes not to mention, Sole was only independent because he *couldn't* get a distribution deal. he even says it in the intro.
Rakus was or is(if they're still around) an indie rap label.
el pee cheated, hes gotta trick sole on the phone cuz he knows hes a wack emcee and couldnt come half aa dope as sole on this battle
