For those of us who love Patty,, and relentlessly play her music in our homes, our cars, while we exercise, when we are hanging with friends, after our hearts get broken or just because we need to hear this music, it is no wonder the beautiful Natalie Maines could just get up there and throw down some gorgeous harmony. I know every breath Patty takes in every song, and would do the same if I got the chance! Love these two singer/song writers. As one myself, these two inspire me, totally~~~
Well, here it is: a month later, and I am replaying once again. I would say that I've come back to it about 100 times...seriously. And, each time I come back, I am transfixed by the beauty of the lyrics, the beauty of Patty's voice, the exquisite beauty of the harmony that Natalie brings. This needs to be on some accessible media. I want to hear it whenever I want, wherever I want. I'm 59 y.o., and I've been in love with music for most of those years. This is one of the most extraordinary.
No woman singer touches me quite the way Patty does. I have a copy of the Pieta on my wall and Patty's words are the only ones which work for it. I haven't seen or heard anything more beautiful. "Mary" is the true manifestation of Heaven on Earth, mother of humankind...and noI am not a Roman Catholic. Thanks for the songs Patty God Bless You.
The more I listen to Patty Griffin, the more other music just falls away - then to add Natalie Raines is almost more than I can bear. Cry a bit? Hand me a hankie.
She has explained in concert that this is a song about her grandmother. Mid way through the song, my daughter turns to me and whispers, "You know you had a grandmother named Mary.........and she lost a son too." Then I lost it.
Like so many others here, I'd never heard this song before the SOA episode, which had me in tears. Such a beautiful song for an amazing, heart-wrenching scene. Will definitely be looking for more music by this artist.
I`ve been completely in love with Patty Griffin`s voice and songs for years and I`m so happy to see this clip with Natalie Maines providing such beautiful backing vocals. Brilliant performance! Thanks for the clip. Tony
Patty is hands down my fav lady singer. A great singer, great writer, great musican, just an all around talent-plus she has a large library of music to follow. Love me some Patty Griffin.
I know I won't be alone in having discovered this thanks to Sons of Anarchy - one of the most powerful bits of tv I ever saw. My God, music and story sooo beautifully entwined...
Sons of Anarchy played this song at a very dramatic scene and combined with the music it was very powerful. My daughter heard Rain on Bones and told me to get it . Now I can't quit listening to her music. She is an awesome artist.
Baran E You are not alone ... Now go listen to anthony and Johnsons - knocking on heaven's door ( that song was featured on SOA finale episode's TV promo ) and thank me later
Patty Griffin is terrific in all respects. This is a lovely performance and I have a ticket to see her when she comes to the UK in November!!. As for Natalie... "Not Ready To Make Nice" is an outstanding song. She has my great respect.....and she is a great performer.
@@pattygriffin3232 Oh my! It's me who should thank you. I discovered your music in 2013, Impossible Dream, and quickly bought all your previous albums, and then those released afterwards. Your music touches and sustains me more than any other artist. I have had the pleasure of seeing you perform first in Sheffield and then Nottingham. You are special, the very best. Take care xx
I have come back, once again, to say how powerful this song is. There may be other covers, but I cannot imagine anything more amazing than the combination of Patty Griffin and Natalie Mains and the intricately woven harmonies they create. This is such a profound binding of lyrics and vocals...I wonder if there will ever be another song that moves me like this.
What a profound influence these two women have had on my own songwriting. They are so plugged in to the core. Hopefully someday our musical paths will intersect.
As a long time Patty fan, I came looking today for videos, by her, excited that she will be opening the Celebrate Brooklyn season in Prospect Park on June 5th, 2013. Came across this amazing, seemingly spontaneous duet with Natalie Maine, that from the smiles on Patty's face, she loved!...and it sounded amazing! What is more amazing is that most of the responses are about the comments Natalie made against George W, while she was with the Dixie Chicks...geez....GET OVER IT! Enjoy the music!
To say that I "like" this is ridiculous. It's one of the most amazing songs sung by two of the most amazing voices in the world. You can find my singular assessment from several years ago, if you're interested.
What an awesome song anyway, but the addition of Natalie Maines background vocals makes it even nicer! Thanks Patty. You are a poet and a beautiful singer.
I had never heard this song before last night's SOA episode. I searched on the lyrics found and bought it... great song and great find by the writers/producers of the show. Very well done.
lol...*so glad* to hear I'm not the only one that watched (and re-watched) that scene....probably 4 or 5 times now. It really struck a cord - a combination of the acting, the music...everything. What an amazing scene with an incredible soundtrack.
I love Patty... She has an angel's voice. Thank you so much for posting this. The is a most incredible duet. Patty's and Nat's voices blend so perfectly...!! Just wish I could see the 2 of them perform this live..!!! Patty Griffin is the most under rated singer, songwriter I know... Hopefully we can get her music out there so she can get the recognition she deserves..
This is, without doubt, one of the most amazing combinations of vocal excellence and lyrical beauty. I have bookmarked it so that, when in need of sustenance for the soul, it is right at hand. Patty Griffin is an extraordinary songwriter, poet, and singer. Natalie Maines is, well, Natalie Maines. This is an absolute show-stopping winner.
Like a lot of other people, I heard this song for the first time on SOA-which I just discovered in the middle of this season. This episode and the acting by everyone in the scene where this song played just left me stunned. Amazing, beautiful, crushing, raw, incredible. Why have I never heard this song before? I mean, I'm a Jew and I think this song is just beautiful and wonderful. SOA is a great show, and this woman-Patty Griffin, is an amazing talent. Wow.
This is just gorgeous. I feel lucky to have been able to hear it. Thank you so much for posting it. These two should do an album together. I could listen to them all day. How truly wonderful!
Yes, a real treat for sure to hear these wonderful talents together. The Dixie Chicks owe much to the song writing of the great Patty Griffin, and certainly they sing her songs well. I am especially touched by the grin on the face of Ms. Griffin as she welcomes Natalie Maines to the stage. A great video and thanks a lot for posting it.
This is amazing if you really think about it!. this was an unrehearsed spur of the moment performance preformed by two amazing voices, at a tsunami benefit concert. I'm sure Natalie has sung to this song many times in her car, and has always made it well known she is a fan and friend of Patty Griffin, so you can bet Natalie has plenty of Patty loaded into her MP3 player! So for Natalie to get up on stage and nail it so beautifully is really no big surprise ...is it? A truly awesome performance
One of my favorites of Patty's, I agree that it's enough to make you get religion. The Dixie Chicks have covered at least two of her songs with great success, I'm sure Natalie is a huge fan.
Ya, I agree, Im a middle aged man, and this song with that scene had me tearing up something fierce. I dont think Ive ever seen such a powerful combonation like that before ever!
Like so many other commenters here, I ended up here after watching SoA, and like others, found myself reaching for the tissues even on the third re-viewing. It's a powerful scene, made even more so as you gain familiarity with this wonderful song. I'm heartened to see that this is a shared experience.
she sings Up to the mountain...a very beautiful song. SOA led me here...didn't realize she sang this song too. It is a beautiful song perfect for the final scene of SOA on Tuesday...don't ya just love Katey Sagal!!!
I had to put my dog of 14 years to sleep today...I know it's not really positive but Patty has a knack for tragically beautiful songs which allow one to grieve...It's slightly comforting
Whoever casts the music for SOA knows how to pick the PERFECT song for any scene! Not only does SOA have the best cast Ive ever witnessed in ANY show, it by far, has the best music of any show I've witnessed too.

Same! Completely
Chills and tears in my eyes every time I hear Patty sing this song. Natalie's harmonies were stunning. Love!
I love how Natalie is mouthing the word since she so used to singing the song herself.
I love Natalie she's so tiny, sweet and pretty.
Look at Patty's smile at 2:54 :)
Natalie surprised her with how adeptly she chimed in there, that's why we call it sweet harmony.
