Are you sure on giving up already the both chips on group stage strategy? I have some doubts about this because the first match day will give us a lot of information for MD2, and if we made a poor MD1 results we only have 2 substitutions and we would rely on poor MD1 performance players plus any injury or manager line-up change would potentially destroy our free transfers planification. Then later on in MD5 wild card would potentially save us if a lot of players are knocked out, however there are way less diferential players and most teams would be already too similar to get a significant advantage.
I think it works both ways as I mentioned, I'm not saying one chip strategy is flat out better than the other btw. The points you make are fair and still relevant to why my initial preferred strat is still viable.
