Lack of lap timing seems excusable in this context given this comparison is much more concerned with the driving experience than it is with absolute performance. The track they've selected does a good job of emulating a winding backroad and there's clearly no question as to which machine brings more pace.
I like the McLaren Artura more overall, the Ferrari’s power seems less usable in spirited city and canyon driving. Thanks for the comparison video, it was interesting, although they are not a proper comparison, I still wanted to see them compared.

Considering the price difference I think Mclaren would be very flattered that the Artura would be compared to the 296. What Mclaren have made for a relatively low sum is remarkable.
The Artura is more of a 570 Sports series hybrid replacement than a 720S super series replacement. It's a different price and performance range. Whereas Ferrari are putting the 296GTB in a whole other category of V6. The 296GTB is clearly meant to replace the F8 with a V6. Let's see when Mclaren will bring out a V6 super series car to replace the 720S and then it will be a fairer comparison.
I would rather the driving position in the McLaren as not a lot on the steering wheel. Obviously the Ferrari's faster but how many are going to race it. Plus the McLaren spider's has had a power increase now and does look quite Nice. Better than the Ferrari convertible. I would choose the McLaren Artura Spider. But living in England i would perhaps go for the Ferrari 296 GTB but needs the right colour and spec. If i was worrying a bit about the money i would buy the McLaren.
The Artura is like a test for McLaren to see if can compete with Ferrari and others in this segment of hybrid!! Cause seriously V6 hybrid? Why not 765lt hybrid? Or one with P1 power unit making 907 HP now that's Challenge!!
Unfair comparison. The Arturo is the new Sports Series car; essentially a 570S replacement. Wait for the 720S replacement and then have a fair match up. Super Series V Super Series.
296 GTB is currently the entry level model in Ferrari's sports car lineup, below the 812 and SF90. Ferrari stopped taking order for the F8 months ago and production is stopping soon.
Not even a comparison. Asseto Fiorano vs a bone stock artura. The only reason why they being compared to eacah other is because both manufacturers released a v6 hybrid around the same time. The Ferrari costs more so it must perform better. The McLaren on the other haand is performing at its price point. To put them side by side is not fair to both of sides.

McLaren has been stomping all over Ferrari for years. That said, while the GTB is in a higher price bracket, it is DEFINITELY the better car between these 2, in looks, performance, and appeal IMO. I'd still take a 570S or 600LT over the Artura personally, let alone a 720S or 765LT. The Artura is kind of a dud. WHen they apply the hybrid tech to their Super series however... Ferrari is gonna have some problems
Both brands have been maintaining the same formulas since the days of 458 vs MP-12C. V8 Mclarens are faster and more technologically advanced while V8 Ferraris look nicer and ride better. Ferrari's interior quality improved over the years though, while Mclaren is improving too but there are still build quality issues.
@@manwell235 While you're MOSTLY right, you have it mixed up in terms of ride quality. Generally speaking, McLarens ride better than any other supercars, especially the Super series cars. They've been described as having "S-CLass level ride quality" by many journalists, and in my very brief time riding in one, I have to say I agree. Very smooth riding cars. Meanwhile, the mid-engine Ferraris are pretty firm rides, and this car in particular has been called out as having a pretty stiff ride
Stomping on Ferrari? Let’s analyse: The 12c beat the 458 in sheer performance but nobody doubted the 458 was the better car, The 488gtb destroyed the 650s in performance and feel, the pista and the 675lt aren’t even in the same league + the pista also beats the 720s and 765lt in track performance, finally the f8 vs 720s, both are pretty much equal, with McLaren having the edge a little bit I would say, but all in all we can conclude the Ferrari is faster on track and gets usually better rating overall and McLaren have the sheer power advantage aka streightline and drag race Ps. I said all this while ignoring the existence of the sf90, with that you have to admit that McLaren is just inferior in all aspects as of now
Maybe I am a little biased the much more expensive 296 GTB is optioned with the Assetto Fiorano pack and it's being compared to a bone stock version of the Artura on a race track, doesn't feel like a fair comparison. Great detailed review James, thank you. The Artura sounds like a very good car with a lot of the typical McLaren strengths, but also their slight weaknesses. The 296 is Ferrari at the top of their game, and still doing it with no steering feel and an old fashioned chassis construction. It sounds like if the 296 had decent steering feel, it would be perfection on wheels. Well done Ferrari.
People need to start quoting weight figures properly. Ferrari always quote their dry weight, which is1470kg so that's gna be nearly 1600kg on the road, the McLaren artura can be specced go be 1498kg on the road according to McLaren.
Thank you for this! The camera work, the editing, the music, all are top notch. Incisive yet charitable commentary gives us clear views of both cars. Excellent job all round. 🙂
I think you'll find it's more about the different approaches to the tech from either company rather than an out n out financial comparison. Not to mention the Ferrari will be worth more on the open market.
Mclaren a far better all rounder and better value for the money. It's better looking and doesn't have the tacky american muscle car paint job which ruins the look of the Ferrari. However I do love the Ferrari as well, they are both masterfull peices of design and superb engineering.
Whoever came up with the marketing "piccolo V12" deserves a raise. It does not sound like a V12, is not a V12, is not intricate or special. Its an alfa romeo engine out of a rental car sedan.
I think I would go with the Ferrari, of course I would have it repainted before delivery. Maybe I am old-fashioned but that blue is terrible. But my reason for the Ferrari is not that it is faster, I have no realistic ability to use the small difference between the two. But the regenerative braking gives me the ability to support my environmental views but sometimes when the mood strikes go like a bat out of hell with a huge engine howling behind me. Soon as McLaren adds regenerative braking that will be my choice. The jet plane controls on the Ferrari are not big on my list and I think that the tires on the McLaren are better matched to its output than the Ferrari (but not totally sure of that)
This comparison feels more like the 488 vs the 570s. If McLaren is building a hybrid replacement for the 720s, I would expect it'll be closer to the SF90.
I wanted to hate the McLaren but it looks much, much better than I expected. Especially in brighter/lary colours. I love the nose, butresses/rear window, dihedral doors, interior, simple controls (lack of haptics), hydraulic steering, more than adequate performance and slightly more accessible price tag. Ferrari is prettier (w/o the Fiorano strped nonsense), sounds better, is faster (but would that matter in the real world?) but it's £100K more expensive. It would be easier to re-enact the Persuaders, has more 'heritage' etc. Heart says Ferrari. Head says McLaren. If you could afford either it would be a nice problem to have! 🤘🏻
Not surprised the Ferrari is more capable as it is US$100k more expensive. Artura matches up against 911 turbo/GT (and dominates), 720 goes against 296.
Ferrari 296 GTB is my clear favorite. It has the better interior, the better engines and also more prestige than the british opponent. However, I love the exterior design of the Mclaren, that's where the Ferrari disappoints me a bit. Pricewise the Mclaren is much more attractive than the Ferrari, especially in my country Austria where there is no tax despite VAT on the McLaren, but 28% on the Ferrari. So here in Austria I would go for the McLaren despite preferring the Ferrari (we actually have an SF90 Spider being delivered this month).
The Mclaren Artura is £50k cheaper than the Ferrari 296. Mclaren 720s is almost same price. So should have used that model instead. Not a fair comparison financially at least using A
Just to be clear this not a contest, the Ferrari 296 is at a different league than the Artura. Let alone McLaren has a well deserved bad reputation that something always goes wrong with them and it will cost you a lot.
i very balanced review showing benefits of both. BUT the Ferrari is the masterpiece. Good on you Mc:Laren for making such an outstanding car. Grazie Mille Ferrari for delivering what the Tifosi need to continue the tradition!

Thank you for this! The camera work, the editing, the music, all are top notch. Incisive yet charitable commentary gives us clear views of both cars. Excellent job all round. 🙂
Macca £185k, Fezza £242k. £57k difference. That's not a like by like comparison.
I think you'll find it's more about the different approaches to the tech from either company rather than an out n out financial comparison. Not to mention the Ferrari will be worth more on the open market.
@@pauln0371 yeah £57,000 extra would do that.
@@sajid6027 it'll be way more than the £57k difference in RRP.
Don't cry
@@mariobotti1952 why on earth would I do that? Grow TF up!
Isn't there a 150,000 pound difference in price ?
No. 57k.
Ferrari 296 GTB Is The Best
Regardless of the history of Ferrari, but the one who chose the style and color for this Ferrari is color blind
Ferrari seems to be a great car, but it sounds soo muted for a car like this.
sounds great tbf. Even tough comparing sounds through a video is a bit meaningful
If I had to opt for a "affordable" Ferrari it whould be a used 458 speciale...
@@-Ehrenbruder-Sam- you did the right thing using “” ahahah 🤣
@Ehrenbruder Sam speciale cost more than the 296
"818 in a road car" ... Car magazine clearly is still ignoring EV performance. Somewhat ignorant.
Really you guys do an intense track day comparison and you don’t set up times for lap times😂 how much more did McLaren pay not to post it?
Nothing but Ferrari paid a lot of money.
Mclaren a far better all rounder and better value for the money. It's better looking and doesn't have the tacky american muscle car paint job which ruins the look of the Ferrari. However I do love the Ferrari as well, they are both masterfull peices of design and superb engineering.
I'd go with the McLaren just because of the butt ugly paint job in the Ferrari.
Where's NSX type S? Same formula, v6 and 3 electric motors.. O.G super hybrid under $ 500k.
Whoever came up with the marketing "piccolo V12" deserves a raise. It does not sound like a V12, is not a V12, is not intricate or special. Its an alfa romeo engine out of a rental car sedan.
Many people have said it does sound like a mini V12 and it's not an alfa romeo engine!
Just this minute reading the same article in Car magazine
You could have done a timed lap. Sounds like someone did not want you to play.
Both manufacturers were happy with us doing a timed lap, no issues there.
@@CARmagazineTV why not then?
THAT is the ugliest paint job on ferrari mean is it even legal?
The Ferrari is really ugly
It really is...🤮
Hybrids suck.
What's the difference in price?
Considering the Macca is stock and the Fez has 100k extra options to make it not much quicker....ill take the Macca please.
Mclaren
I think I would go with the Ferrari, of course I would have it repainted before delivery. Maybe I am old-fashioned but that blue is terrible. But my reason for the Ferrari is not that it is faster, I have no realistic ability to use the small difference between the two. But the regenerative braking gives me the ability to support my environmental views but sometimes when the mood strikes go like a bat out of hell with a huge engine howling behind me. Soon as McLaren adds regenerative braking that will be my choice. The jet plane controls on the Ferrari are not big on my list and I think that the tires on the McLaren are better matched to its output than the Ferrari (but not totally sure of that)
Ferrari
This comparison feels more like the 488 vs the 570s. If McLaren is building a hybrid replacement for the 720s, I would expect it'll be closer to the SF90.
If you think the colors on that Ferrari look good, you're wrong.
Even with no lap times (what a shame), that is the best track review from Car Magazine in a long time!
Thank you! Hopefully some lap times next time.
@@CARmagazineTV Any GT3 racer on slicks will destroy any road legal car so other than for fun, lap times are not really significant.
Probably McLaren will bring a LT version of Artura for a rematch
Always hope in Allah
That ferrari colour scheme should be ILLEGAL. How's it called, Rosso Elfonso ? Or Asseto Elfiorano ?
Sad that the McLaren beats the Ferrari looks wise.
