I'm looking at a single malt scotch whisky from the Glenmorangie distillery in the highlands today. This bottle has been requested quite a lot from you guys, so I figured it was time to share my thoughts on it. Cheers!

I've been telling all my whisky mates to try this instead of the standard OB. It's the best amongst the wood finished series. Very underrated.
Agree. Easily the best cask finish!
Every bit as good as high end scotch.
Nice rewiew. I've tasted quite a few Glenmorangie, maybe 10-15 different ones, and I think, next to Signet, that this is one of the best. By the way, I'm quite a big fan of port matured whisky :)
It's a nice one for sure. Btw... have you tried the Allta private edition? That one's probably my favourite Glenmo!
@@Gwhisky That one is also great👍. My father got a bottle as a birthdaypresent...and he shared a few drams🥂🌞
Very solid dram. Consistent, inoffensive, mellow, yet still complex and interesting. I just bought a second bottle of it on special sale some 3-4 weeks ago. For 34-35 euros what I paid for it there is not anything else at this age that comes even close to Quinta Ruban. The packaging and elegant bottle make for a nice present too.
Cheers!
“Consistent, inoffensive, mellow, yet complex and interesting.”
Yeah that about sums it up. Excellent stuff! Merry Christmas! 🎄
Excellent review in terms of both the breadth and the depth of content. I had picked up a bottle of Quinta Ruban this AM (before watching the video). I'd had it before but having only recently discovered Gwhisky reviews I was curious. Well done.
Thanks for the kind words! Enjoy the Glenmo... it's fantastic! 🥃
My coworkers and I were just talking about this just today! We had it in the past and really liked it. It is better than the ones you mentioned on this vid.
Hi Geoff. From the cask finishes the 12 year old quinta rubin was my favourite (the new 14 haven’t tried), but I wonder why they’ve upped the age? Maybe Glenmorangie have enough stock to do this or might it be something to do that the casks have been used one too many times and the extra two years are needed for the extra finishing. I don’t know, just curious. Thanks Geoff as always for a honest review , enjoyed it. Slàinte
Good question, David. I don't know what motivated the bump in age. I'm sure there were some bts reasons for it, but I have know idea what they were. 🥃
It might be they've aged the original 10yo for an extra two years as they don't have the quality of barrels to finish in just two years.
Great review Geoff... I started like you my journey with original 10 which also was the beginning of my infinity bottle lol. After 20 years I still like it and I have all glenmorangie expressions. My favorite are Malaga cask finish 48% non chill filtered and signet. Also I like quinta ruban and 18 but I don't buy them anymore. Cheers
I've not tried the Malaga cask as it's not sold here, but the others you mentioned would be my favourites, too. 🥃
This malt is straight fire!! Nice little spice to it. Very enjoyable. Great price too! Only drink scotch neat.
It's damn good!
Merry Christmas Geoff! Looking forward to your videos In 2022
Thanks so much Matt! No plans on slowing down! 🙏🥃
This sounds like one that would appeal to me. Cheers Geoff and Merry Christmas.
It's an easy one to like. Hope to see you review it at some point! Belated Merry Christmas Al! Hope you had a good one!
@@Gwhisky I sure did mate. Great day with the family & some nice drams. Enjoy the next week & have a great New Year 🥃
Likewise, buddy! 🥃
Interesting Glenmorangie 10 year old does absolutely nothing tastes cheap.just tried the lasanta very very impressed the sherry hits you soon as you open the bottle fills the air with sherry aroma. Gonna have to try this one , great channel
Glad you like th Lasanta. This one has pretty broad appeal and imo has a little more going on than Lasanta. I'm sure you'll like it. 🥃
@@Gwhisky look forward to it I let u kno how I get on with it👍
Great! 💪
Nice video. I was surprised by this one. One my favorite under $50 Scotches
Yeah I didn't expect to like it this much.
Cant wait for Nectar D'or! Its the only one that I didnt try! So will wait for u review and then will decide if I should buy it
I reviewed that one several months ago. 🙂
@@Gwhisky well I guess I am blind...thanks will check it out!
This is one of my favorite whiskies.
Their new 13 Cognac finish is really good IMO, amazing body and sweetness from the Cognac finish. Merry Christmas!
I'll give it a go when I see it! Cheers! 🥃
My second place whisky of the year, just behind of Craige 13. Excelent piece of work, this Quinta Ruban
Agree! 💯
I've tried this Quinta Ruban and so far it's my favourite from Glenmorangie and one of my favourites from the port cask finished bottles. However, have you tried Arran Port Cask? I really recommend you try it and compare it to this one. Cheers! Happy holidays!
Yeah this is the best affordable Glenmo, I think. Excellent bang for buck, too. I've tried the Arran port, and I actually prefer this one! Happy holidays Roland! 🥃
Hi G, enjoy your videos. Nothing against you but I would quite enjoy a little blind tasting videos from you. I enjoy a whisky but dang I can’t get half the notes/tones you get. And heck, I’m from the home of whisky, KO.
Bro, you gotta try the new Palo Cortado. It's pretty dope! Will not rock your whiskey world, but great semi-every day sipper.
I haven't even heard of that one. Sounds interesting, though. Hope we get it in Taiwan! 🥃
Thanks for the review. I'll have to pick one up the next time I'm at the shop. Too expensive for the security guard, but might make a good Lunar New Year gift for the brother in-law. ;)
Geoff, I'd be interested in your thoughts on the Macdonald's Celebtrated Ben Nevis. Have you tried this?
I haven't tried that one yet but it's on the radar. If I see it for a good price I'll grab it! 🥃
I reviewed this as well. Always great to get different points of view.
I really like this bottle. Good stuff☺️
It is! 🥃
@@Gwhisky I hope you are not in quarantine anymore :O
In quarantine til January 3rd, unfortunately. 😑
@@Gwhisky Oh no :(
Excellent review.
Thanks WT! 🥃
My favorite port cask whisky so far.
It's a good one!
@@Gwhisky also the Benriach 15 Tawny Port, sure you'll like it aswell
An oldie! I've had that one. Was a while back but I remember enjoying it!
@@Gwhisky yes too bad it was already discontinued along with the Madeira wood and the old 12 portwood, but siill can find it where I live (Portugal)
I am a big fan of whisky that reminds me of childhood candies! So will check this one out! Ha
Hah true! 😂
I have and like the QR12. I'm not a fan if tge 10 or a Lasanta and thought the Nectar D'or was terrible vs it's cost.
Agree! Best of the affordable range! 🥃
Hi Geoff, I'm new to your channel but love the content you have and the amount of reviews and information you provide is superb! The only Glenmo I've tried thus far is the original 10 which I found very light, fruity and quite sweet from what I remember (this was 5 or 6 years ago when I was less experienced with different whiskies and brands) and so I'm not sure if it's a brand for me. However I've read some more intriguing things about this one but am still hesitant as to how sweet it might be, although I don't mind a certain level of sweetness but don't like it to be the dominating factor and prefer it to be of a darker variety I guess - so I wondered if you would say that is the case with this one or is it more of a typical beginner-friendly whisky that Glenmo are known for (albeit with a different finish)?
Hi Jwebber. Apologies for the slow reply-sometimes comments slip through the cracks and I've been on holiday. Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban is not as sweet as most port matured/port finished whiskies. I don't like things that are too sweet or cloying myself, but this one doesn't bother me in the least. Still, it is still relatively sweet whisky. If sweetness is something you're especially sensitive to, it might not be your favourite. That being said, it's got a lot going for it so generally speaking I'm happy to recommend it. Cheers! 🥃
@@Gwhisky that's great mate I appreciate the info, thanks. I've had relatively sweet whiskies so up to a certain point it doesn't put me off. Like yourself no doubt I have an ever-growing whisky 'wish list' and whilst I wouldn't necessary expect the quinta ruban to prove one of my top favourites I'll definitely file it in the 'worth considering' category based on what you've said as well as the reasonable price for a 14 year old at 46%.
Really enjoy this one. Best from the line and pretty complex and tasty for the price.
Agree! 🥃
Glenmorangie is hit or miss for me with the higher abv ones being preferred. The Signet was tasty but not worth the price. The QR and Lasanta are good for the price. While I prefer sherry, I do have a sweet tooth so I tend to enjoy port casks as well. Good review. Skip to The Move @4:29
I have a sweet tooth myself, but Port usually tests my limit on that. Glad thos one has some tannins and doesn't get too cloying.
Btw glad you're helping people skip to the important part! 😂
I was in a Total Wine in my area grabbing an Arran 10 and an Ardnamurchan AD/ and an older gent came into the isle and grabbed 6……I counted, 6 bottles of this Glenmo 14 port finish and nothing else. I immediately thought, I better look into that. 😂
Hah it's great stuff. Can't say I've ever bought six at a time though... 🥃
This is a great drop for the money. Usually heavily discounted at xmas in the UK. Cheers!
Agree. Solid value and a delicious whisky! 🥃
My first single malt experience was with the QR 12 yo (black one). Still wonder if I'd come back to the same one.
I had some bad experiences with that bottle. Much happier with the newer stuff!
just starting out my whisky journey and trying to decide what to pick up. i really wanted to try the glendronach 12 but sold out everywhere near me. i have access to the glenmo 10, quinta ruban, glendronach 15. ive had remy xo a long time ago will these go down as smooth as the cognac?
They're very different from cognac, and “smooth” isn't always considered a good thing when it comes to whisky (although I think it can be). Different spirit, so quite hard to compare!
I’m a Glenmo fan. This one has a very unique mouth feel. They say vélvety on the bottle and it is. Though the 18 is my real love.
The 18 is nice! I wouldnt wouldn't say the QR os velvety but it's got a nice enough texture.
There's a distillery from Melbourne Australia called Starward. They age their whisky in red wine casks. If you get a chance try the 'Nova' edition. It beats the Quinta Ruban quite soundly.
I've heard of Starward. Love to try it. Sadly not available in my market.
It has been two years since this review. How about an updated review on whiskeys like La Santa and Quinta Ruban?
Done.
i think you will find most of the color comes from the port barrel influence, hence it is darker
The Quinta Ruban shared the throne in my collection with Auchentoshan Three Wood, which, to me, packs a similar taste profile. I'd say that the Auchentoshan is more sophisticated and smoother. Both have been recently dethroned by the Benromach 15 which now reigns supreme on its own.
I found the Benromach 15 quite avg.tbh....a blend of smoke and sweetness that was meh....I'll def. Pick up a bottle of Quinta Ruban....
@@andyirons7162 Yeah, I suppose it depends upon what one is looking for in peating and balance. I like sherry and I like modest peating and Benro15 hits both of those spots with superb nuance. Much better than all those Islay peats that rush up an smash you in the face with tire fires, bilge water, and medical waste.
@@kellywellington7122 gotcha....makes sense....it does strike that balance that you described.
One of my top 5 favorite scotches. Agree that GM is hot or miss. Like the 10, dislike the 12, love the 14 and am indifferent to don’t like the N d’or
Wow... that's precisely how I feel about the range. Great minds thinks alike! 🥃
Yep I like this better than the lasanta and a lot better than the nector.
I’m not a fan of port wine but this port whisky good. The same with rum cask whisky which I like a lot better than rum itself.
Agree! Not a port guy but this one works. Best of their affordable core range imo! 🥃
I just couldn't get into this one - either Port finish doesn't agree with me or I picked up a bad bottle.
Fair enough! Not for everybody. 🥃
I have the three quinta ruban and prefer the 12yo.
Fair enough!
I get a lot of floral from this this a lot of rose and kinda of a Brandy thing too
Interesting. I'll be sure to look for those notes on my next pour of this stuff! 🥃
and how would u know what leather tastes like??
How do fans of peated whisky know what smoke tastes like? Smell and taste are linked. 🥃
@@Gwhisky perhaps, but scotch uses peat in the process to impart flavor. leather is not
@@jw-lk1pe Peated whisky drinkers also use terms like "medicine cabinet," "ash," and "tar." Point is smell and taste are linked. Easy to make the association between how something smells and tastes.
@@Gwhisky so how does leather taste? point is, it's a useless descriptor bc literally nobody knows what leather tastes like. you could say it "smells" like leather and I would accept that as a viable descriptor. but, "tastes like leather"? absolutely useless
@@jw-lk1pe Useless to you, not everyone. There's sensory overlap between smell and taste. These types of descriptions are common within the whisky world. I didn't invent the practice, but I'll continue to use it because I find it a useful association. Nobody's asking for your approval here.
what a handsome guy
😂
@@Gwhisky Sounds like someone wants you in the proposed Aqvavitae calendar alongside Rob and Phil! 😜
IMHO Glenmorangie 10 is still better than this.
The 10 is a classic. The 40% abv is frustrating though...
@@Gwhisky Yes. The 10 is superb. Personally I quite like Port or Sautern finished but sherry finished is awful. We're all different.
@@shadmo8629The only type of individual that thinks the original 10 year is better than this 14 year is someone who knows nothing about scotch. Do yourself a favor and keep your uneducated opinion to yourself because if you say it around a group of people that drink lots of scotch you will be laughed at.
@@davidsaul2707 Get off your high horse and don't be so patronizing. Who gives a f#ck if "people that drink lots of scotch" laugh at me. Some people are arrogant twats.
