- The Romani people, also known as Romani, have faced centuries of persecution and discrimination in Europe. With a rich cultural heritage and a history rooted in India, the Romani have endured marginalization, social exclusion. Descendants of migrants who left northwestern India around a thousand years ago, the Romani have spread throughout Europe. Despite their diverse traditions, languages, and contributions to various societies, they have often been subjected to prejudice and hostility. Efforts to address the systemic discrimination faced by the Romani continue, promoting social inclusion, equal opportunities, and recognition of their rights as a vibrant ethnic group with Indian origins.
Romanis share a beautiful history and cultural similarities with modern Indians. However there are constant debates on wheter India should tap into this "Indian Diaspora" and if yes, would it be really helpful for us? What are you opinions on this??

Banjara is a specific community whose primary occupation is trade .

I am Indian living in Austria. I have seen how Roma are hated and discrminated. It is not only on Austria, every where in Europe they are seen with hateful eyes. I dont know how, when people come to know that I am Indian, they treat the way a normal man is treated. But when treat a Gypsy, who too have Indian looks, are seen with hate.
I think it’s because Roma have a reputation for rejecting formal education, for begging in the streets, for scamming, and for stealing, that’s why white Europeans are more likely to treat Indians and other south Asians in civil manner but are less likely to treat Roma people like that
maybe because of how much India developed over history and that now it's basically a super-power country like China or Russia, and it's to some extent fear I guess, while about Roma, people show hate because they've seen the bad examples of Roma, like stealing, begging, being unwashed, refusing to integrate in society and not going to school and etc. (It's also added when some parents educate their kids or threaten if they misbehave "the Gypsy is going to get them and steal them") but that's the thing, if we concentrate at the negative, we'll see only the negative. And the stealing and begging pretty much lots of people do, doesn't matter the nationality or ethnicity. Some say Roma don't go to school cuz it's their "tradition" - far from it ! it's a stupid motive. Some just simply either don't want to, or can't afford it, I dunno it's their problem. To me the best I found to not concentrate to the racism part and to develop myself, whether they appreciate it or not, i'm gonna do for my own good at least.

I believe they are Banjaras found in Rajasthan, Gujrat can be seen in any state living in tents specially I see in Delhi most of them are from Rajasthan, the Romanies facials are much similar to Banjaras I am from Rajasthan and I have seen all Banjaras having red tan skin tone, brown eyes, brown hair, and they also wear beads as malas, its their culture they are merchants thats why they don't stay at a single place for long, the main reason for their migration to Europe is Islamic invaders who used to kidnap and loot these Banjara merchant and traders and sent them as slaves to turkey thats why Hindukush mountain range was named means 'hindu killer" as most of them used to die during journey
India must help in educational Upliftment of Romanis wherever they wish as such in the areas of their substantial presence.
This Romanis should be given special status in those Balkan countries and this discrimination should be stopped immediately and our external affairs minister S. Jaishankar should take some steps and measures to raise the voice of Romanis on the international platforms whenever he visit Europe

Well, even if Romanis had Indian connection i highly doubt they would prefer to accept or acknowledge it. And if they've migrated centuries ago they're no more Indians. So i guess it's better to let them live in their new region with their new culture.
They do accept that they are come from Rajasthan but now their home is different and their not Indians , why don't people understand the difference between ones roots nationality heritage and from where one is from? Their a founding culture because they came from Rajasthan and now are around the world and in different parts each one having their own culture and diversity.

Those people had to leave India due to attacks in the region from muslim rulers.. They travled far and away till they reached europe but when they reached there with no chances of going back as their lands were already taken away by the invaders..
They faced centuries of discrimination.. There profession was dance sing and many forms of other arts.. They were kept as slave tortured beaten and killed yet they are treated the same way.. They face discrimination due to their colour language face and originality ..
Slowly they converted to islam and Christianity.. Again by force and centuries of rebel to not do so..
Till today they have not lost their own language.. And they combined their religion that with others to keep their traditions and God alive .

The Romani come from India. They are Indian people who left India long time ago. Yet, the Romani language is definitely of Indian origin, and it is still spoken by many Romani, even though only now it began to be written.

This was a very interesting blog. While you spoke about the prejudice against the Romanis in Europe, it would have also made sense if you could have spoken about the prejudice against Banjaras in India.
India gives 60-80% reservations in education, jobs, promotions to backward groups. 60% of budget specifically goes for those people in the form of scholarships, cooperatives, incentives, govt help etc. Europe doesn't have such an extensive affirmative action policy. Europe only preaches, but is too poor to act.

Romani also called as Domari has to do nothing with Romans (for those who are confusing them). They were Indians who were living in Northwest India (Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana) and migrated to Europe 1000 years ago due to discrimination. They still follow their Banjara style lifestyle and because of this had never been accepted in Europe. In fact they're the most hated community in Europe.
They didn't migrated due to discrimination but it's due to Islamic invasion. That's not Banjara lifestyle that's Gumantu life style. Banjaras were semi nomadic were great traders . They weren't like just migrate from one place to another due to any invasions. Ok Banjaras instead assisted many invasion trading grains with them.

I also read some articles where they discussed why romanis are facing discrimination one of the reason is their culture maybe they follow different religion but their culture is different from western culture. They have also rituals of sacrifice or yagya etc. That's why westerns think they are barbaric.
