Fair do's Ed you do like a challenge, there are times when watching your Videos I think you are brilliant with amazing patience, other times I think why on earth would you take on this task. Really pleased you got this problem sorted out, hope you picked the A2 up for a song. Good luck with the rest of this project.
@@eadsierestorations I had a feeling ... common problem on Audi's and VW's. Learnt that many years ago when working in mechanics garage. Glad you've sussed it out 👏
take the lever and mech off, clean and lubricate it and see what difference that makes, could be the cables and the lever pivot, and incidentally putting the clutch down when the engine isn't running doesn't help any, and when they are diconnected try changing gear at the box and check that the selector works
@@eadsierestorations good luck, and it isn't a that uncommon car problem, especially on a vehicle that has been sat for a while, usually a clean and lube works wonders, treat it like a cable on one of your bike restorations
I think your mate may be correct the cables are critical and if seized or out of adjustment it will not allow correct movement and selection. Have you got a manual to set up the cables if adjustable?
@@eadsierestorations I’m not mechanic & I’m also very short of patience… But, gear selector forks, linkage cables. But if the floor was swimming in oil, then the gearbox may be fooked! 😩🤦🏻 I do hope it isn’t… How much is a recon box for an A2?

Not sure maybe the slave or the cables.
No mechanism into the gearbox. They seize
Sometimes there's a pivot plastic bit at the end of the gear stick that wares out ...
Sorted, it's the gear linkage on top of the gearbox

Silly question but have u tried selecting if engine running , won’t synchromesh properly otherwise
Yes bud, have found the issue. Sticky selector mechanism on top of the gearbox.
No such thing as a silly question. Cheers my friend
Have you taken the gaiter off the gear stick and checked it at that end?
Not yet bud, but will do shortly, thank you :-)
