    Andrew instead of varnish I would use Whittle Waxes Evolution. It’s a hard wax oil. It would add no thickness to the boxes. I have just used it on my kitchen work top. 3 coats, it’s as tough as nails. Can be used for floors. You put it on really thin. Half a litre covers 30sqmts!

    Great content. I have the same kit and I did not realize that the smaller boxes are slightly off from standard.
    To prevent the handle from falling off, I have a strip of gaff that lives on the box, and wraps onto the lid. It has been a great “bandaid” that has caused me no issues.

    I oil mine once a year, creates no layer and protects them from rot. Works fine.

    Thanks. This answered all my questions about nested boxes. Thanks also for flagging the impact of sealant on fit. If I got nested boxes, I figured that I'd just grab a paintbrush and apply a coat or two of polyurethane. You may have saved me a lot of time sandpapering :)

    The reason the wood is so nice is that it is marine grade baltic birch plywood.
    2x-3x more expensive than big box AB plywood but so nice to work with.

    I didn't expect to see the Apple Box here. Yes, there is no substitute for the kupo's Apple Box (unless create it self)
    Uncle Andrew is always a great help to me! If you have a chance, please teach me about negative fill. I think a good gaffer's talent includes this ability!
    (My ultimate question is the difference between a complete black and a half black ;) )

    Another great review.
    I already have a set. Excellent note on the size disparity. Now I have an excuse to pick up more.

    Do you think cutting a handle into the solid side of the full apple would drastically reduce its structural integrity? If not, I figure you could use the sliding top side as a stencil to get correct placement and size of the hole.

    • @gaffergear

      The thought had crossed my mind about strength, seeing as it has no internal wall.

    • @roryonabike5863
      @roryonabike5863 3 роки тому +2

      I assume that Kupo didn't include handles on that side precisely because it would undermine structural strength. The question is, by how much?

      As someone into woodworking I think it shouldn't affect strength unless the material is thinner than the standard boxes. Edit: Finger room might be an issue if it is loaded.

    Hey friend, sorry that this is unrelated to this video, but just wanted to say you may want to see about getting your hands on some SGC 120 tubes (collab between Quasar and Aputure). They are available in Canada now. Just as bright as an Astera Titan, but noticeably lighter to operate, swappable batteries, and about half the cost. Would love your take on it.

    • @gaffergear

      I got my hands on one but the menu was in Chinese

    • @MatthewChenDirector
      @MatthewChenDirector 3 роки тому

      @@gaffergear Really? Strange. Mine is in English. Also perhaps if you do a video on it you can shed some light on what SGC really is. I am told it's an Aputure and Quasar collab. But then a moderator in Aputure's official FB page is saying that they only purchased the Bluetooth tech to use with Sidus and is NOT affiliated with them otherwise. Now I'm confused.

    Great review. I have 2 sets of these for my first set of apple boxes and I got them because of space issues as well. On the varnish, what happens to them if you do not varnish them?

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  3 роки тому +3

      If you only use them indoors not much will happen, apart from getting dirty, like foot prints, it's more to protect them from the damp outside

    • @roryonabike5863
      @roryonabike5863 3 роки тому +4

      Plywood looks better sealed. Indoors, sealant protects it from dirt and stains. Outdoors, it protects it from rain.

    If you stack the pancake, 1/4, 1/2, plus the lid next to the full do the heights match?

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  3 роки тому

      I haven't tried the lid. But a 1/2 and two 1/4s is not a match either.

    Sounds like it was indeed stormy. Guardian Australia: "The cold air mass that blew in from Antarctica sent temperatures plummeting and caused widespread snowfalls all the way up to the Queensland border. Sydney, meanwhile, shivered through its coldest day in 37 years on Thursday with the temperature reaching just 10.3C as the cold front hit much of the eastern seaboard. The last time temperatures plunged below this level was 3 July 1984, when the city reached just 9.6C."

    I guess y'all don't use lights in Australia- Because "pancake" refers to the Chimera soft light.

    • @gaffergear
      @gaffergear  Рік тому +3

      Grips in Australia calling these pancakes in Australia long before chimera pancake lanterns existed and probably before I was even born. But it's good to know that the rest of the world is automatically wrong.

    • @esotericmoniker
      @esotericmoniker 9 місяців тому

      In my part of the USA we also call the 1/8 a pancake, so I don't really know what you're talking about. These are also far more common than a Chimera light so if anything is the "default" for the word "pancake" on a film set it's the 1/8 apple box.
