  • Westminster Chimes and Voice: 0:11 | Live PA #1 (Inaudible): 1:35 | Alert and Shelter in Place Message: 2:56 | Alert and Evacuate Message: 4:25 | Live PA #2: 5:58
Eastern Kentucky University posted on their Twitter that they would be performing their own test of their sirens after the Madison County test. The county in itself has 90 sirens, and the university has 4. All Whelen 2900's. The Madison County test consists of Westminster Chimes and a test voice message. The EKU "bonus" test consisted of some rather weak live PA, followed by two alerts and voice messages, followed by a better live PA. I talked to the campus emergency manager after the test, and it turns out it was their first time trying live PA, and they didn't realize how close you had to be to the microphone. Anyways, it was a pretty cool test! Sorry for the shakiness, my camera was zoomed in very close and the least bit of wind caused it to move slightly. Enjoy!

I find it really cool how it announces the radio station call letters.

Looool using Federal Chimes. And that echo is epic. But how did they get a Federal chime onto a Whelen controller?

Very strange, Westminster chimes and pre-recorded voice sounds like it's controlled by a Federal controller, although it's really a Whelen controller. Weird. Great video!

That threw me off too until I mapped their system out. They used to have a system of older Modulators and at least one EOWS 612. With the old system they would sound off in the chimes and do a voice announcement afterwards for the test. To keep the system sounding the same they probably had the vendor rip the recording from one of the MC or MCP panels. With how scratchy the chimes sounded I'm starting to think they ripped it from one of the controllers as well. Whelen's engineers reproduced Federal's chimes and installed it on other systems in the past, so it's not the first case of a Whelen with "UV-itis." lol

Yep, the old system did consist of Modulators. I have most of the current Whelens mapped out. The EOWS-612's belong to the Bluegrass Army Depot, although they may be inactive. There are other sirens in the depot as well, including a Whelen, some ATI-esque speaker arrays, and possibly an Eclipse 8.

@@DJ2226 Yeah, the chimes fade in the same way that most MCP controller chimes do.

I had to find this video to send to my mom back in Michigan because I was out with my dogs when we heard this for the first time and it scared my Golden so much!! She ran up to me and pressed herself against my legs, then when it stopped she hunkered down and ran back to our RV like "im all done here, time to go inside" and this is a dog that NEVER wanted to go inside after a walk 🤣

It really doesn't matter how far away you are from the mic, it's just a matter of adjusting the volume potentiometer on the back of the encoder. I find it strange how in the first DVM how they send the DTMF chain multiple times.

Not sure how that works, since they told me in person when they leaned in closer to the microphone it was a lot louder.
