Great technique! The string is important. If you tie it around something more sturdy like the wooden part of the chair, your dread my be compacted because you'll pull it tight, The flexibility of the string helps the tension while you work to remain loose and helps create a more consistent dread. Notice how the string gives way and allows him to decide the tension as he goes.
