The fact that 25 police vehicles were in wrong-way pursuit of the suspect in a busy highway was a disaster waiting to happen.
25?!! All in pursuit of a common robber? Like an idiotic Keystone cops scenario, though anything but funny.
So every one of those cars was driven by somebody with absolutely no thinking skills.

Police should have abandoned the high speed pursuit when the suspect entered the highway into on coming traffic .but instead they put civilian lives at risk trying to be hero’s and what did it accomplish ? Fuck all.

Honestly on the side note I want to add. There are horrible drivers out there lately. Drivers are given licenses too easiliy these days. Almost everyday I face drivers who doesn't know what theya re doing or very confused.
Same I drive the 401 almost 100km a day there and back and I see too many close calls and idiots who shouldn’t be allowed on the road. It’s a dam shame what our world has come too.

I live in a small town (less than 4000) in south-west ontario and my friend was just murdered in Jan. of this year. It's not safe in Canada anymore. Canadians are not even allowed to defend themselves to the point that they will be safe.

When someone breaks into your house, it's better for you to go out the back door.

Chasing an alcohol robbery done on LCBO, endangering everyone, police must be accountable to decide pursuit the vehicle on the opposite busy lane. What stupid and irresponsible they were. They should’ve done better, helicopter to keep an eye on the van to see where would exit maybe.

We need more info but this is eerily similar to a crashed that happened just a few days ago in Pennsylvania. Police were chasing robbery suspects when the suspects crashed and 4 people were killed, including an unborn baby. Strange. Hopefully this case is the same as that one and it was the suspects killed instead of innocent people aside from the infant.

In my small northern city, people shoplift on the regular in our neighborhood Walmart. Police do not even bother showing up. They just let them walk. The real tragedy was how the police handled this endangering EVERYONE on that highway. It simply was NOT WORTH the pursuit. I can't imagine delivering that news to the parents of that baby. Sorry, but, i believe the police are squarely at fault here for endangering innocent lives and destroying more lives at home. What a shame.
What makes you think they wouldn't have crashed regardless if the cops chased them or not? My sweet summer child, they were driving on the wrong side of the road on a busy highway! He was already doomed the second he entered the 401 - so why blame the cops for HIS actions? Are you saying police shouldn't pursue robberies anymore, so we don't risk the public safety on the road if they decide to drive in the incoming lane?

They receive training continuously to protect the public good. How did they protect other motorists by taking out an entire family including an infant and, for what, a bottle of liquor?? You may have thought differently if it were your baby. I know, first hand, what it is like to lose a young child over a police chase. That family has been forever traumatized.

In a 3 lane rd where my side had the two lanes, i had someone barreling down on me and didnt clue in until they passed that they were in the wrong lane, over a faded solid yellow line
Few points of thought: Why aren't on-ramps closed so there is no traffic on the highway at the moment? There seems to be a lot that happens at that intersection of the highway, 401 & 412.

1- you would have to close the ramps for miles and miles which is not possible. There are hundreds (if not thousands) of cars on the 401 at any given time. Happens way to fast to clear them out of the way and close ramps. The 401 is way too busy

Hi it’s just not done unfortunately, 6 years ago me and two of my five children were hit head on by a wrong way driver near Orillia Ontario. 17 police cursers deployed apparently and a spike belt behind me was put out but I had no idea what was up ahead we had just been on the highway about 30 seconds. We never should have been able to get onto the highway.
@@pacman3556 Recently at that intersection of highway there are always crashes, this one just happened to be there, didn't know that it was wrong way. I didn't know at the time. In general, that intersection of highway is always a nightmare. Next, you can close the on-ramps up to a point where you would have police setting up on the highway detour to force people off the road and more highway interactive billboards telling people about the traffic ahead would have worked greatly, if we had them. That is one investment that would be great to have. People then can get off the highway and not sit for hours and get stuck.

1- first time this has ever happened. And it was under unusual circumstances. Things like this don't happen daily. And with the volume of traffic on the 401 this area is no more dangerous then any other part of the highway
2- car chase started and happened way too fast to close all ramps to the highway. And police had no idea what direction the thief would even be going in.
3- car chase happened way to quickly to start changing all the signs along the highway.
4- there are way too many cars on the highway at any given time to get everyone off the highway. It is clear you have never driven on the 401 because if you have you would know what it is like if they close even one lane of traffic and what it is like to try to clear even one lane let alone the entire highway (especially at that time of day during rush hour traffic).
But nice try at playing Monday morning quarterback. Maybe one day you will score a touchdown.
why cant barriers be built on the exit ramps of high ways that would close when detecting an vehicle approaching from the wrong direction.
Not sure something like that even exists but if it does it would cost a fortune plus all the maintenance and repairs , are you willing to pay more taxes or have the money taken from somewhere else and lose other things ? Usually when this happens it isnt a robber/criminal , it is just someone who got confused and made a wrong turn and having a barrier come down would cause the person going the wrong way and anyone going the right way to slam into it .

Not true. Cement spikes in the ground poining on and angle toward the wrong way entrance. The spikes will pirce the tires making them flat and hard to drive on but cars coming off the hwy would simply drive over them the other way without pincters@shari9721

Just because they don't release the police video to the media and internet, does not mean it does not exist. Privacy restrictions are much tighter in Canada than the US. So police video is never made public.
Cameras are used by many Canadian departments, including this one. And they are being rolled out for most others.
Canada is slow to adopt these things because people, like you, will cry even louder if your taxes have to be increased. You are not willing to pay enough to even get competent police in sufficient numbers, let alone first generation bodycams.
So cameras take time.

What I'm about to say won't be popular, but it is a consideration. The police need to lower the testosterone levels and know when to call off a chase because it is a danger to the public. As soon as it became a chase going the wrong way on a major thoroughfare, it should have been called off. Perhaps lives could have been saved.
