  • Jim and I are at it again on Eagle Lake in Northwest Ontario, targeting musky in deep weed beds with bucktails and topwater baits. We had a few opportunities with some nice muskies as the day went on, but unfortunately the only good fish we were able to boat was a nice 38" northern pike.

    Great video Brian, remember a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work.

    I like that spot that you started topwater in the afternoon, always seem to raise a muskie or 2 there, there is also another spot further in that bay to the to the south east that is all about 7 to 9 feet deep with good cabbage. Great spot for top water.

    Hi Brian, love the footage! I couldn’t help but reminisce about the old VHS tapes from Joe Bucher and he always took the prop bait topwaters (read Topraiders) underwater during the figure 8’s. I have only ever hooked 2 pike in Europe that way but is there a specific reason for you to keep the bait on the surface or maybe switch it up with a few rounds on top and a few under the surface? That always fascinated me! Thanks for your feedback!

      Dirk Van Nieuwenhove Thanks man! I've always had better luck getting them to hit it on top, despite most people saying to go subsurface. It seems like every time I try that, thr fish spooks. For me, it's all about doing what you have the most confidence in, not what people are telling you to do. My 2 cents 😊 I appreciate you watching, as always!

      Confidence is everything so you should do what feels right for you! Thanks for the explanation! 🙂👍

    Brian, the part of the (musky) fishing is that when you don’t catch a fish in a long time…the jackpot is getting closer and closer 😊

    Good Video, I guess that's why we call it fishing and not catching. We all have days like that but if you watch the edited UA-cam video's if people fishing for 5 days and they make it seem like 1 day fishing its easy to get frustrated.

    I'm a UK big pike man, and your videos are fantastic. It's on my bucket list to catch a good 40 incher - Brian if I ever manage to get a flight across which lake should I head to? I've been told LOTW or the St Lawrance River, but I'm not chasing 50's!

      Sean B Well thank you so much! I appreciate you watching! I would say the best lake to head to would be Lake St Clair. Good numbers and a real good shot at some big fish! I'd recommend Captain Mark Kornosky of Treble Maker Fishing Charters treblemakerlscfishingcharters.com/

    I’ve never fished Eagle before, but why do you guys primarily throw topwater and blades? Don’t you think you’d get more strikes from negative/neutral fish with a glider or dive and rise, even a pull-pause bait? I get hook up percentage drops with those, but you’ll move a lot more fish than the ol bucktail and topwater show. Thoughts?

      Mike Valento After fishing Eagle for about a decade, 2 times a year, in the warm weather periods on any given day, a bucktail will be the number 1 bait 90% of the time. There are times when I've seen glides and dive and rise baits be effective, but those times have been few and far between. And the topwater is not only effective up there, but it's also the most enjoyable, for me anyway.

    I hate it when they hit on the 8 where you can't really do a proper hook set.

    • @DubV-qr5xb
      @DubV-qr5xb Рік тому +1

      Yep, that's why it's recommended to slow your turns to stretch your "hook set zone", skies often like hitting on an abrupt change of pace anyway. Far from a guarantee but it does increase your chances a bit
      *Edit: also why at least 8'6" rods or longer are so widely used nowadays, gives you more control around the boat and allows for more precision on your fig 8's
