Almost definitely, it didn't make Nathan Gale into a monster but he'd have probably fixated on another target and hurt someone else. It doesn't make Phil culpable though, how could he know? He's not a great person and he's said and done a lot of awful shit over the years but Dime's death is not his fault.

The sound that everyone knows and loves developed when Phil joined the band. He was the frontman of Pantera for all their good albums. The behind the scenes stories tell that he's the one who pulled them out of the glam style while touring the Power Metal album.
@@Greg-rv5vm Phil got more and more insecure on each album to the point of Super high to screaming to low throwup incoherent Death Metal. Anybody can scream their head off. No real talent.
Vinnie and Dime were Pantera! Phil was the David Lee Roth or Axl Rose for the band at the time that had a couple good albums in him as they both did , that couldn’t handle being upstaged by a guitar player , drummer or both.
without phil joining the band they might have gone nowhere but being a glam band phil was a massive influence on their sound when he joined and was a huge part of pantera become who they were
The brothers ended Pantera! They moved on. That so called singer left the band and now he's using the name, what they're doing to Pantera now is absolutely disgraceful
I really wish there was a mutual departure and an appropriate media message to the fans. Just a good take a break, let's get out some side music, and regroup and come back Stronger Than All. That's all they needed, maybe some rehabilitation on the drinking, and appropriate time for Phil to get his back in order. But geez, so many things could have happened better than the way it went down.

Of course, but LabiaLicker didni't say that Phil acted alone. You inferred that.
@@LabiaLickerIdk man, Dimes guitar playing was always good, ever since the beginning of the band. Phill just brought some extra talent to the table. It's funny how he corrects the guy about when he started drumming for pantera. But wouldn't acknowledge those early albums as pantera albums. Guy always twisted shit to suit his own narratives.
Shame that they do a Pantera "reunion". If Phil never left Pantera in the first place, Dime would probably still be alive. So kinda lame to do a reunion after that.

Well? That's not how theoretics function, because the calculations required to enter every single event would render any alignment impossible to track, and cherry picking from hindsight is self-serving. But being in his place, your own regrets would surely keep you awake at night trying to convince you of your hand being involved. A big reason we need to face our own demons and hold ourselves accountable when we first recognize them. Otherwise by pushing them down on the inside we keep them alive, and they will grow and feed on things that do not belong to them until the day you face true struggles, it will come up from the depths and lay claim to all damages as it becomes you and shoves you down into the deep inside where it was in hiding just barely alive. This has now become your fate.
One fact that almost everyone seems to overlook is that Pantera wouldn't even be a footnote in music history without Philip H. Anselmo. They were nothing more than another band trying to be Van Halen until Phil turned them on to Slayer, Metallica and tons.of underground metal. Phil even wrote some of the riffs in the early days. Damageplan was Pantera without Phil. Down & and Superjoint were Phil without Pantera. Damageplan was a shining example of everything that was wrong in metal at the time. Down II is a legendary album that went places nobody in the band had gone. The first three songs on that album are unlike anything before them. There's definitely some Sabbath influence that is a thread throughout the album, but you also get a Deep Purple and Zeppelin influence. They took what they loved about 70's hard rock and metal and married it to a doom metal foundation. Damageplan was paint by numbers and Phil's other bands were pushing the boundaries in every direction. I love Pantera and I agree that Phil did a piss poor job of being diplomatic about what Pantera had accomplished, but the music he was doing was way more interesting than what Pantera was doing at that point. He followed his heart and made the music he heard in his head. Damageplan plan made an album of forgettable bullshit.
@jamesthomasjr9911 That's kind of a weak example. Eddie Van Halen revolutionized electric guitar and is still influencing kids to pick up one today. I have mixed emotions about the Pantera tribute shows myself. That had nothing to do with the point I was trying to make. Anselmo has caught shit for years for walking away from Pantera. People want to believe that Dime would still be here if Pantera hadn't broken up. That could be true. Who's to say one way or the other? Instead of hating Phil for leaving and insinuating that he's responsible in some way for Dime's death, they should be hating him for ever joining Pantera. Without his influence, Pantera would have most likely folded and went home to a day job by the mid 1990's. The style of hard rock they were playing was horribly out of fashion by 1993. If Phil hadn't been part of the equation, Pantera would have been a laughing stock like every other second string Van Halen clone that was all the rage. Van Halen themselves didn't fare that well. Thanks to Grunge, getting wasted and having fun became almost taboo. Pantera would have never gotten on a label because that was all they knew. They weren't really metal fans. Dime would have, not been in that club that night if Phil hadn't turned them on to heavier bands. Neither of the Abbott brothers were idiots. They saw the writing on the wall. They knew Pantera was over before they got started if they didn't do something fast. That's why Power Metal & CFH sound like they were made by two different bands. Dime and Vinnie wouldn't have been on any stage that night if they hadn't trusted Anselmo's instincts. As far the tribute tour is concerned, I would be completely opposed to it if they had called it a reunion. A reunion is not possible because of Dime and Vinnie, but because of the tribute, there are a generation of fans who would have never heard those songs live. I'm glad that they will see their full power. I'm glad Zakk gets to salute on of his best friends by standing in for him. It's good to see Rex kicking ass on a big stage again. There is already some talk of the tribute band making new music under a different. I own everything Phil and Zakk have ever done. I was around when they both newbies, and I'm proud to have been a fan since anyone knew who they were. If they drop a new album I'll be in line to get a copy the day it's released. Sammy and Dave have already done a tour years ago. I think they're both full of shit, so I didn't see it. There were also some talks about an Eddie tribute show, but Sammy and Dave's egos are too big to be in the same venue to pay tribute to the most influential guitar player of the last 40 years.
@@Έμποροςθανάτου Is Bob Zilla and Pat Lachman resurrecting Damageplan a better example for you? "But people deserve to hear those songs played live!!!!" So fucking what? Besides, if you ever wanted to hear, Phil perform Pantera tunes, all you had to do was go to a show where Phil was. He always did Pantera songs at his shows, so what's the difference now? He, just like his other bands, put together another band, and played Pantera material, yet again. This whole thing is just a money grab and a farce. Not to mention a real kick in the head to true Pantera fans. No Pantera fan worth their salt would support this mockery.
@@xxxllloorpoopypants3687 You know him and Darrell's GF are friends right? I think you should consider the possibility that Phil is not a heartless man. He is one of 2 surviving members, the other of which is also touring Pantera too; Phil lost his brothers and was blamed for the death of one. I cant imagine even having the thought of touring a "Pantera tribute" tour with a shirt that says "for the fans, for the brothers, for the legacy" and having a picture of both of them on the two kick drums in the concerts, after what Phil had gone through. Try looking up the reaction Phil had when Darrell first died in 2004, just watch it and tell me if your assumption is still correct in your eyes.
Rex and Phil were clearly Pantera. That is why them touring as Pantera now is totally not a douche bag sell out cash grab that disrespects the brothers. Definitely not...

I’ve seen almost all the great and legendary drummers…Bonham, Watts, Palmer, Bruford, Chambers, Aldridge, and dozens more. But none more important to me than seeing Vinnie with Hellyeah. When he walked onstage, twirling his sticks and laughing, my son was pointing at him with his jaw on the floor, basically speechless. Amazing privilege to see him play live.
he chose his words very carefully after all the disrespectful stuff phil said about them and even still, dime got murdered. So, it wasnt actually a confrontation btw members that caused it but the ramblings of an addict
Right? You think Vinnie would go to this sham? This would never happen if they were alive. Imagine Phil pitching to them this idea of doing a Pantera Tour without Vinnie and Dime in the band? They're gonna sample the sounds too. Phil would get shot by both of em. For sure.
A lot of people on here, commenting that this was a Pantera tour. I have seen Pantera twice, the real Pantera, in 1997, and again in 2001 both times Phil was a raging lunatic on stage, demanding perfection from the crowd, as well as drug induced shit talking of things that I will not repeat here. I also saw Pantera at a “reunion “show” and I will say this much, it was the best I have ever heard Phil‘s voice, and the best live show. I have seen him perform of the three. Sobriety is a good thing, and in the end, this was not Phil and Rex trying to be Pantera, but it was a tribute to the past, and a tribute to the band. Every song was played as it was on the albums, with very little live ad Lib. It was very very fitting. And I think a lot of people get it wrong when they call this a tour, but it is a tribute to the band and its legacy. I choose no sides in what happened, because I have no dog in the fight other than I was a fan. I had my opinions of Phil, but I liked the music. The reunion, for lack of a better term, is pretty much just a tribute to the bands, former glory and should be treated as in my opinion. But as far as the shit talking in the press? I have a guitar world magazine, where dime was talking shit on Pat, and that he was a terrible singer, and at least Phil could “make him money.”
Yeah this is a bit of a stretch considering Phil was doing interviews calling for the death of Dimebag and Vinnie, among all the other horrible shit he said. I don’t know what you’re going for here, but this ain’t it brother
Between Pantera and Metallica, it seems like it is almost impossible to put together a rock band that makes it big that is not totally dysfunctional internally. Oasis, Van Halen or many others. Possibly just human nature. Possibly sex, drugs and money. Who knows?
It really just comes down to personalities,. IMO anyway. And personalities can clash, explode. Being in a band is one of the hardest things anyone can do. Decisions about money, music, band direction etc.. can easily cause tension. It’s like going into business with 4-5 of your closest friends.
There are a couple that come to mind that figured out how to keep it together, R.E.M., Radiohead, Pearl Jam. But yeah for Hard Rock/Metal it's much tougher. I think that lifestyle is just so destructive, really burning the candle at both ends. People flame out
Res Hot Chili Peppers seem to all get along pretty well. Anthony and Flea have been best friends for almost fifty years, Chad has been the drummer for 36 years, John has been the only inconsistent member, and that's just because he doesn't really deal with the fame very well. They might all have their own personal demons and questionable history, but they're one of the only huge rock bands I can think of that have all been friends for 35+ years.

Eh. That may have tarnished the Pantera name even more than just disbanding. It's pretty clear that the Abbott Bros wanted to sell out and do nu metal. Damageplan was not very good. It wasn't any better than any of Phil's cringey side projects. It's like the Abbott Bros wanted to sell out and Phil wanted to just do unlistenably noisy projects for "metal cred". Both were huge missteps. Nu metal and buttrock were such a problem at this time.
3 sides to a story. Phil accepts his role but I refuse to believe Dime/Vinnie didn’t play their parts in it either. People gotta stop acting like they were infallible
there is more stuff and happening behind the scenes that some of that all 4 band members took/will take with themselves to the grave. Vinnie used to be a major asshole sometimes, rex too, alcohol plagued the Abbott brothers till the end,and loss of his brother drove VP even more to booze. ofc not mentioning phils addiction and a boiling point happening when he overdosed on heroin on their homecoming. Rex was also a major snowplower when it came to drugs. All these fans screaming about how they spoke to vp/rex/phil(not going to add dime here because he is a saint confirmed) backstage for 15 minutes for all of them being so humane and laid back, but we don't see the everyday thing. The remaining abbotts and phil recalled that rex's book is abt 50% bullshit with him speaking down everyone else in the band except himself, but in the gibson interview i guess he got a little closer to the turht about everyones behavior during the downfall of pantera. If you really start to dig down into the subject as i did one night, you will find alot more info about the band. After all it was and severely mentally deranged person (his mom bought him a gun for his birthday wtf) finished the unraveling of pantera because he thought they stole HIS music. - i realized, holy shit thats alot of text xD Well anyways i hope more people who think a single invidual is at fault for the events that took place in the final years of pantera will see this. It just bugs me that there is so much diversion in opinions of who is at fault when it is clear as day that it was one schizophrenic piece of shit who was the final nail to the coffin. all of those guys had their own difficulties. But yeah quoting phil when he said something along the lines of "there is what he said and what he said, the truth is somewhere in the middle."
@@user-yp5hg1px7p yeah, I've tried to see it from both sides for years. Phil had the other bands, that's not good for most bands, doesn't work.. even the behind the music made years ago, roadies & others talked about how they were pulling apart when Phil was in a lot of pain & needed surgery. Just becoming difficult to be around after Driven, wouldn't take time off to get surgery & recover, and he admits it in later years. I hold nothing against any of them. Dio was the nicest guy, & there were issues in all of his bands too if you see the recent movie/doc
Both Phil and Rex said the brothers became annoying to be around and had a lot of annoying low lives hanging around them too. Meanwhile both Phil and Rex, their addictions were wearing them down (+Phil's back injury), which only amplified their inability to tolerate the non stop party attitude the brother's had.
2:45 truer words have never been spoken. Then once the Abbott bros passed away, Phil came back and steamed ahead with new members. That is why I can't bring myself to go see the current lineup, whether Zakk and Dime were buds or not - it just ain't right.
What kills me about it is all the so-called "friends" of Dime and Vinnie lying through their teeth about how the brothers are happy looking down on this farce of a "tribute." The only motherfucker being honest about it is Chad Gray. Everybody else is just spewing out false bullshit. I will NEVER accept this cover band as the real Pantera.
I kinda feel the same way. Led Zep broke up after John passed, but at least they knew there could never be another Led Zep afterwards. However they did a show with Jason doing his Dads drum parts. I can forgive that. But the new Pantera IDK
that's what i hate most people who r seeing them don't understand. vinnie felt betrayal from what phil did, and then to lose his brother and then phil wants to come back around?? that was why he never forgave him. not saying not forgiving was the best choice, but i get why he didn't and held it against him until he died. but now that he's dead, phil does this move where vinnie can't speak out on it anymore? why didn't he do it when he was still alive? 🤔 just something to think about
Learn more about rock history. The Doobie Brothers toured for years with no original members. Pete Best did a solo album called "Best of the Beatles" that had no Beatles on it. It was a pun. Some industrial band once changed their name to U2's newest album and made an album called "U2" and released it the same day.
@@re4477I mean how can the Abbott brothers be a part of it if they're not around? At least some people that never got to see them, can still experience somewhat what it kinda was, original or not. Pantera is Dime and Vinnie! I liked Phil's vocals in that era, but it's sad seeing him and Rex cash in on their legacy. Zakk is not nearly as good as Dime.
People kinda forget the Abbott brothers weren’t exactly angels during the success of Pantera. A big part of why Phil and Rex broke off and did Down together was they were tired of the constant micro managing the Abbots did. Pantera was maybe started by then Abbots but they alone didn’t contribute to the success of the band. Without Rex and Phil it wasn’t gonna work. I think a lot of the bad blood was started when they saw the success of Down with Rex and Phil. Nothing could be bigger to Pantera for them. Rex and Phil went on good side bands and projects and the Abbots did not. It’s not about picking a side it’s about being objective. Go back and look at interviews in 96 on. Pantera was not a band that was gonna survive too many more years. Nobody just didn’t wanna say no to the money.

Eerie watching this now.
So when are Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony going to tour as Van Halen then?

Pete Best did a solo album called "Best of the Beatles" that had no Beatles on it. It was a pun.
Some industrial band once changed their name to U2's newest album and made an album called "U2" and released it the same day.
And now Phil is out there making money off it and laying Pantera songs calling it Pantera without the Abbott brothers, shameful. Same for Rex too
Ain't mad at all. I never got all caught up in that stuff.
@@re4477I mean how can the Abbott brothers be a part of it if they're not around? At least some people that never got to see them, can still experience somewhat what it kinda was, original or not. Zakk is a great guitar player and Dimebag probably wouldn't have picked anyone different. I kind of want to check em out as I never got too when they were original.
Phil was making arrangements for a reunion before Vinnies body was cold. Phil discarded PanterA for bigger and better things, but we never saw bigger and better things from him. Now he's all about his cash cow. Good for the kids that go to the shows. Good for the PanterA crew. Whatever makes you happy. I'm just not interested 🤷♂️
Yeah, I've been wondering when Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony are going to reform Van Halen. That's all it takes, right?
Agreed BS
Gets interviewed about damage plan meanwhile his name on the screen is with hellyeah? Lol
Phil talked shit about Pantera until the bodies were cold, then he rang the Pantera cash register once again. Thanks Abbott brothers!
I was surprised Zakk did this to Dime. And spare me about a younger generation of fans missing out. I never got to see Led Zep but I accepted it.
Not to mention Phil is the sole reason Pantera broke up.
Real fans wouldn't accept this bs tour
Dude needs work. Dead people aren't owed anything.
@@bcrichwarlock7608fr man. i was born 2yrs after dime was killed and i refuse to see this so called tribute pantera was dime and vinnie there is no pantera with out them
@@TheVoiceInYourHeadd Phil is also the reason they bacame the Pantera we all know.
That a hole at the damage plan gig destroyed any chance of a reconciliation...seen them live twice in Dublin. Once supporting Megadeath and then headlining their own gig...( Still have one of Rex's plec's) ....Rip to Vinnie and Dime 🤘
Play that on the video screen at the next “Pantera” gig
This Tour would never happen if they were alive. Imagine Phil pitching to them this idea of doing a Pantera Tour without Vinnie and Dime in the band? They're gonna sample the sounds too? Phil would get beat.
Phil did a tour with the Illegals to play Far Beyond Driven in it's entirety, and no one cared. He throws the Pantera name on it, and suddenly people want to lick his asshole now. Fanboys will fanboy, I guess.
And now Phil is running around with the Pantera name. Absolute POS!
Vinnie and Dime could've easily continued Pantera on their own as well but didn't use the band's name. I like Phil and he is definitely one of the best metal vocalist out there but him "continuing" to tour at present using Pantera is a fcking slap to the brother's name, for the sake of more traction and money
Fuhk that Pantera cover band going round nowadays 🎉🎉🎉
:/ this is before the absolute hatred he developed for Phil, which is really nice to see. He’s actually able to say very nice things about Phil. Instead of going I don’t wanna talk about it, etc… which I get why.
Excellent drummer
F fill
Wait, who was the majority holder in Pantera at that time?
LOL, I guess some fans weren't so cool with it. 🤣
I just saw Pantera 2 hrs ago and here i am...
No Vinnie+No Dime=No Pantera
How the current line up sound?i think zac is doing dime justice personally and phil is sounding pretty good
@@ericm4426 Phil got no voice, Zakk sound good but it does not play like Dime...plus listening to Phil pathetic way of asking constantly people if they will come back to see them make it feel so cringe
@cyberrider1765 zac has his own style, dime was his friend,i seen pantera 2 times original line-up,even opened show for them count in to domination when i was 11 years old.
Some things better to be left alone
@@ericm4426 i agree. I am no one to judge what one does and how they make a living, I will not support it though
@@cyberrider1765I feel Zakk could actually Fcking shred the songs if he actually tried hard. I feel like he doesnt wanna be compared to Dime, so he just kinda plays the songs a bit, when he could shred the f out of them. When hes playing black label shows, he shreds hella hard. Really good guitar player
That’s the weirdest facial hair ever.
DAMAGEPLAN WAS THE TRUE SUCCESSOR AND (UNFORTUNATELY) THE SWAN SONG OF PANTERA.
EVEN IN THE CONCERTS MOST OF THE FANS HAD PANTERA MERCH ON
MEANWHILE PHIL STARTED THAT PILE OF ASS SUPERJOINT AND THAT THING PRETTY MUCH CRASHED AND BURNED LIKE HIM
I reported Pantera on Instagram as "pretending to be someone else." #RipAbbottBros
Dork
@@waywolfjones8127 No that's a solid bit.
Hahahahahaha priceless
I believe Phil Anselmo has no problem stepping on a dead man's grave, but Zac Wylde is going against Dime and Vinny's wishes is dirty as fuck. Just to grab a quick buck. They should truly be ashamed of themselves.
I believe Vinny over phil , he went on to do down for years, and now goes back to play Pantera with zakk and Charlie, Damageplan was awesome, I think it’s fukd up to try to put the band back together after Darell and Vinny have passed on, sad , I won’t go see them , in my opinion, fuk phil
Phil and Red realized they could only make REAL money off the Pantera name. No Abbott brothers, no interest as far as I'm concerned. But the rest of y'all enjoy the show.
Pantera is Dime and Vinnie! I liked Phil's vocals in that era, but it's sad seeing him and Rex cash in on their legacy. Zakk is not nearly as good as Dime.
I honestly understand where Vinnie was coming from with not wanting a reunion, but i have to say he really made a mistake not doing it.
You are so wrong.
