If you want to understand, I was hesitant even watching these videos because it is supporting someone who supported North Korea through tourism(even if he only made a penny off my view). So is North Korea an extreme example, yeah. I don't know of a single other country that brainwashes people on a daily basis for a single goal and position. I will use this more as a scholarly point then a religious one. In the Bible, Jesus gives Christians the right to judge in two and only two circumstances. When children are being used and when the church is being used. While Christianity has been corrupted today, even it's founders saw two things as so evil it is ok to judge. I think the rulers of a country setting themselves up as the de facto "God" means they are corrupting the church. Unquestioning reverence of anything takes away what it is to be human, the ability to think. Name one other country that does this? And you will see the difference between NK and everyone else. There is no human right more important than the ability to think for oneself.

Surely anyone going to North Korea would be thoroughly briefed on what not to do, which is probably just about anything they are not directed to do. I would never go to North Korea for that reason, the consequences of a screwup, intentional or not are just too great.
That is an extreme gradation. Having different laws and culture does not justify such an extreme misuse of sovereignty.
Tearing a poster off the wall could reasonably be seen as a dick move pretty much anywhere, but in NK it’s punishable by death. That makes it an evil state.

Although I agree, on a personal level it is not intelligent to provoke an obviously evil and unstable regime. This says nothing of what is a proper and justified response by foreign legal authority.
Humbling or being humbled demands a requisite respect that DPRK's actions preclude. This is quintessentially an insane statement, to say that respect must be given in absence of the work necessary to deserve said respect. Major difference between western and eastern cultures, that still fuels issues today.
Everything about how you express your ideas are sane, well collected and super classy. Right on my man.

Man, you've become my idol. You get the point of traveling, which is to empathize with people whose backgrounds are totally different from yours, instead of judging them or feeling superior. I traveled to Egypt recently and engaged a lot of locals (your openness is one thing that inspired me to do so) and they were really surprised, because the vast majority of visitors they get stay away from them! I would show up at a local restaurant and they would be amazed, as the other westerners prefer to visit McDonald's (they told me so!)! I was taken aback by that. I hope you read this, I send you a hug, man.
I feel you man. Why on earth would anyone eat at McDonalds when travelling? Sure, if it's to grab something fast because you're in a hurry, fine, but the whole point with going abroad is to experience that place.

I think the biggest thing to be exposed in any country you’ve visited: the government of any nation and the people that nation consists of are two different entities entirely.

The only way I think they'd be able to spy on you everywhere you go is through what you take with you willingly-your cellphone. It has at least one camera and a microphone. Not to mention GPS tracking. Your smartwatch or fitness band you wear (if you wear one) also has GPS tracking, a microphone, too, if it's specifically a smartwatch.
Video game companies also track your gameplay usage. With parental controls enabled, I can get a glimpse of what gameplay information the Switch probably collects anyway, which is what game any system played on what day, and for how long.
It also tells if anything was downloaded from the Eshop.
Library systems track what books are checked out to who.
UA-cam stores watch history.
Truly we are all being watched.
The reason why I'm not too anxious at the thought is because I have nothing to hide.
I am a law-abiding citizen as far as I'm aware. I don't do anything illegal; the only drugs I take are prescription medicines. I don't steal from stores or anybody else. I don't harm anybody. Heck, I don't even drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes, e or otherwise. I have a job. The only gray area thing I've done that they can possibly hold against me is pirating old video games that I own(ed) to emulate.
There's also the fact that I am very religious that I feel they might hold against me, but I don't think they could hold that against me, considering freedom of religion is a thing.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us! It felt like we were there with you, experiencing pretty much everything, and even though we didn't get to see some of things you did, it was still much more than we could get from like, a Google search.
P.S. I've only seen your NK series, so it took me a bit to realize the "in case I don't see you" is probably how you end your videos in general, so hearing it for the first time in a video about NORTH KOREA... sounded very ominous XD again, thank you for sharing in such detail!
Totally agree with your statement about appreciating freedom when you haven't had what we're used to for 8 days, the concept of not being able to walk or wander at your own leisure for 8 straight days is mind boggling. The simple act of walking next door to grab coffee or beer without having someone walk behind you is taken for granted I imagine

I think it's very hard to judge a country during a trip where you were under so much control. The control is of course designed to produce "good reviews". To truly understand North Korea, one would have to interview those that risked their lives to escape.
It's not entirely fair to only go by what those who escaped say either. But for sure, there's a lot to tell that will never be seen in one of these controlled yours. I think it was very obvious that Nick is aware of that though.

Those who live in Pyongyang are those who have earned that right to live in that city based on their loyalty and help to the regeime. So anyone including children you talk to are not regular North Koreans, but are part of the privileged few. They don’t need actors. The people you encountered on the Pyongyang street are party apparatchiks and their children. If you were able to talk to them in English, they are educated. So who has the right to be educated? Those who have shown their loyalty to the regime or whose parents have shown their loyalty to the regime are educated. The others doing cleaning and repair work, you can’t talk to anyway because they don’t understand English.

I agree with you completely about travelling in the moment rather than glancing at scenery in between checking your mobile. I rarely take pics now... just enjoy the experience. After all millions have same pics. Love your series...you're very honest and respectful of all host countries you're visiting.

There's a lot of sophistry here. When you go to other countries you are not, by the by, directly enriching the government because the government rarely has that totalitarian control over every aspect. Your dollars/euros/pesos go to the people who live there, who will pay some taxes but in general will be able to use your money to make purchasing decisions that benefit them as individuals.
North Korea is a special case because they so brutally control their people that everything you do is for the country's direct benefit or it does not happen. EVERYTHING. Defector after defector has described the tours like the one you went on, how everything is carefully staged from top to bottom by the government, every itinerary checked, nobody is allowed to go anywhere or show anything that is not designed to pain the government in a good light. The shops you were allowed to shop in were approved and made full and presentable. Your feasts were not typical food, but designed to impress you and make you compliment it. Farmers working in fields is no problem to film, they are proud of that. The overwhelming military presence is not, because they know it looks bad to have so many soldiers/civilians, so if you do you are in trouble.
And rest assured, you probably were not always routed on the most direct roads to your destinations. If there was anything shameful or negative that could be seen by a road you do not go that way. That's also why you can't approach construction sites, because many of them are hollow shells to create an outward appearance of prosperity (China has this same problem, btw). Bottom line, do not forget you are permitted to do this tour only because it is an infusion of hard currency and propaganda.
That said, I am NOT saying you shouldn't have gone. You do you. But the honest thing would be to state that you feel the value in shining light on these places requires you operate within a certain framework, not create false equivalencies with other countries. Britain, United States, New Zealand do have their problems of course, people are imperfect everywhere. But it is nowhere the near the same thing. You do not get beat up and left brain dead if you make fun of Boris Johnson or Donald Trump, in fact many people make their living doing it. You choose your religion, or no religion at all. You keep most of the money you earn, you spend it how you wish. You have freedom in the West, that's why everyone runs to it, and away from places like North Korea.
And the reason its so safe for you (and also so clean) is simple: the people live in terror of their government. Can you imagine what would happen to them and their families for generations if they made the country look bad, especially in front of outsiders? You don't have to, defectors have said. One disloyal family member thrusts the entire family down into the lowest caste, suitable only for manual labor and a terrible life in a work camp.
Your videos are well made, and I think it is important for outsiders to have a look into places like North Korea, even if it's an artificial look and sanitized. But do not justify your travel decisions by creating false equivalency.
I'm quite late to these videos but this was extremely educational and I binge watched them! I love your Q&A at the end and this was wonderful to put into perspective. Of course, taking everything you experienced with a grain of salt knowing they won't show you all there is bad and good to NK. Still was breathtaking to see just how beautiful the landscape is!

I get where you’re coming from, but not sure I agree with your reasoning. No country’s pure, of course, but in the other direction, the logical extension of what you’re saying would seem to be “All governments have done bad things so there’s no point in boycotting any regime,” which is kind of like saying, “everyone’s done bad things so there’s no point in imprisoning anyone for any crime they commit.” I get that one can’t boycott every country if one wants to travel, but on the other hand, one has to ask oneself, is there any regime so depraved that one wouldn’t/shouldn’t support them with one’s money, and where does one draw the line?
Really enjoyed watching this series, have just been to South Korea so was curious to see a bit more of the North (other than the glimpse I got on a DMZ tour). Thanks for making!

One thing that really bothered me about your videos was how well they were feeding you consider how much starvation there is.
Not really a critic of you, they wouldn't have given the food to their people anyway, just despicable.
I think it's one of the more well done aspects of the series, him showing the contrast of those two situations and alternate realities. One moment we can see a table filled generously just for the tourist group. In a while Nick shows them in a bus driving past people who are carrying sacks of rice which is probably the most they are let to bring home for their families. He doesn't have to tell how bad things are there in NK. And seems like many in his audience are pointing it as a criticism, like they are expecting the self-evident explained.

Katie north Korean aren't even starving anymore unlike in the late 90s. They improve their agricultural science and farming situation a lot and got rid of the famine crisis. North Korea is improving everyday while America is dying into degeneracy and destroying the earth.

I don't think it is staged in a sense that those people aren't actors. That is their "normal" life, but since they can't move, speak or even think freely, they are basically programmed. They play their roles through their whole lifes without knowing what they are part of. And the tourists are supervised, the regime decides what part of this "game" they are allowed to see. Similarly to a videogame, where one can't go everywhere but have to follow a certain way the creators/programmers decided beforehead.
Those who you can talk to (like the guys in that shop...) are probably "specially trained" people (anyone who speaks english really is I guess), maybe even spies or something similar.

Exactly right. He clearly has no idea the extent to which he WAS really a part of a huge, highly managed stage show, a propaganda exercise. The idea that "lots of people have pretty normal lives there" is just so ignorant.

Really enjoyed this series. That took a lot of courage. One conclusion I had - NK is desperate for attention and approval. ----- You only paid ~1500 euro for that whole trip yet there were literally hundreds of NK people who dedicated their time and resources just to your group (an entire hotel staff, factory workers, school kids for example). The 'Truman Show' reference is perfect.

I spent 3 weeks in Ghana 2 years ago and have been dying to go back ever since. You are the PERFECT personality for Africa and will absolutely love it and they will love you!!!!! We are headed back to Ghana in January for 2 months, after Egypt (thank you for convincing us ;)) cant wait to find out where and when you are going!
In a way, you did all you needed to do with this series for us in the audience. From the first episode I got the immediate feeling that the country is just like it's portrayed in the media: isolated and controlled. We could now see it in the footage that you captured, huge apreciation to you for doing that. With empty streets, empty hotels, empty beaches and other empty tourist attractions it's self-evident that the regular people are kept in strict government control. Nobody in their right mind would be saying that everything we saw here presents the NK in a good light and I'm glad you didn't frame it all like we were stupid. No over the top clarification of things, despite now some people of this audience demanding that you'd been clearer about the human right violations happening there. You (Nick) couldn't have seen them happening anyway, so in my opinion there's no point complaining about the choice of not focusing on that bad side. This video series is a stark but needed contrast for what I could read about the defectors and their own horrible reality. Every bit of new knowledge is valuable.

Also, in regard to immigration taking your passport, who actually keeps it? You went into North Korea via plane and left on a train, so at what point did you get the passport back seeing as you were not leaving the same way you entered?
Being an arranged group tour I suppose it got transferred to the place of exit as that’s from where everyone exits.
I just wanted to say thank you for creating this video series, you have given me a real eye opener into a country I’ve only ever heard bad things about and I have really enjoyed watching your time there. Sadly I’ll probably never get to go myself so thank you again for sharing your amazing adventure with me 😊
He saw what the government wanted him to see. There was nothing real about that. The whole trip was carefully coordinated. Did he get to talk to the locals in any way? Did he get to travel where he wanted? No he didn't... that he still presents all of this in a positive light should tell you something about his lack of ethics and morality.
There's no eye opener here, if anything this series tries to close your eyes regarding the reality of the country.

The empty convenient store was so staged. I have never seen a store that perfect in my life. I felt like the locals in the area couldn't buy anything in there.
Yea that's why visiting NK is just a giant tightly controlled tour. I find it quite self unaware he is at times because these tours making life there look normal .... Is literally the whole point 😂. Most of the NK population is starving

@@Rasputin.Bogard The country has little to no food, no power, no running clean water. Most people have to bathe and clean clothes in rivers. It's a sad sight. The tours are completely staged which is why they are on a time frame with no freedom to go anywhere. You can't leave the tour group because what's past the tour group is a country that can't hold itselfs up to the power they say they have.

I think what this tells us is that the only real way to find out what a place is like is to go there and experience it for yourself. This series was really interesting and not what I was expecting! Really enjoy your films!

Regarding stuff being staged...this doesn’t mean “staged for the bus” etc. There are varying degrees of this. Let’s say you’re NK citizen, you clean the streets at 5AM with soap and water, then you are assigned to some meaningless job just for you to have a job - like field work that’s not really productive etc. and you have orders to look nice, have a shirt etc.but not talk to strangers, it just so happens a tourist sees you fulfilling duties. Not staged, but staged, as your behavior is modified by tyranny and knowledge that any deviation from script means uranium mines work/death. It’s self-censorship based on fear and paranoia what makes the behavior inauthentic. You go through the motions as anybody can be an informant. And even if today it’s not as easy to keep NK citizens from all western material, they still learnat school that South Korea is starving etc. and are intetionally weakened by school system, for example they have to publicly criticise friends. They try to work around it and make private deals “you criticise me I criticise you” etc . There are good videos with NK survivors on youtube.
This goes to show how you look down on workers by calling their jobs "meaningless." Labor is labor whatever field you are in, my good bich.

And if it’s about labor, these people could be doing so much more but they aren’t allowed too, so that could also be meaningless. Why did you try to hard to get offended? I loved the way they broke down and described how it could be and shared their thoughts here. That’s all you took out of that? 🤦♀️

I was very surprised at how beautiful Pyongyang looks in the sunshine, the river and the landscape. If it wasn't for the regime, it could be a truly beautiful and peaceful place to live!
Very enjoyable vlog series, and I agree entirely with your reasons for going etc. What stood out to me was the people of NK seem really lovely despite what they are going through and I hope it gets better for them.
