  • As the quarterback market continues to rise, the NFL continues to worry about the inevitability of record-setting dollar amounts at the position. The latest QB reset was with Jacksonville paying Trevor Lawrence $55 million a year, seemingly setting Dak Prescott up for getting $60 million a year. According to some reports, Jerry Jones and a few other owners want a quarterback salary cap. Should the NFL do this?

I want it! Anything to cap what players get paid is something I will like and think it is essential to the continued success of the league. If the players strike or walk then replace them, the league will eventually recover through the draft and young players. The only thing I like about players is what they do on the field during games and have no sense of loyalty to them in any way especially paying them big contracts.

I don’t think there is an appropriate level of appreciation for the fact that the players aren’t actually taking from the owners when they demand huge contracts. They’re competing with each other for a share of the cap space. Every dollar one player takes is a dollar that’s no longer available for the rest of the team. When you have 1 player (of 53) getting 23% of the money, is it even possible to build a competitive team? Specifically for the Cowboys, it’ll take about half the cap space to pay Dak, Lamb, and Parsons “market value”. Congrats! You just blew half your budget on three players that couldn’t get you there with a more complete team. Now you have to figure out how to pay FIFTY other players with the same amount of money you just spent on those three.

The problem isn't Dak. The problem is an organization that has too many chefs in the kitchen. No discipline, no structure on how to build a championship team. It's a county club atmosphere, in which players feel like they've already arrived . They're terrible at contracts, they only want to sign players that they can market off of. Hence, the reason they gave Zeke a big contract when he held out. It's all about selling Jersey's and marketing. I personally would have traded Parsons and restocked my draft class for years. Sign CD Lamb, sign Dak, and get rid of Parsons. I'd rather have a great defense and offensive line..

Don’t suppose these same owners would commit to a cap ticket prices?🤔

Sure, Jerry would love a cap on qbs. Because he doesn’t know how to manage the cap😂😂😂

20% of the salary cap would be a good idea and plus they would get a raise every year the salary cap goes up. You could even create a QB tier 1,2 and 3
    1-20%
    2-18%
    3-15%

Nothing these Guys say make any sense. If you exclude qbs from the cap you’re just going to create the same issues at other positions. 🤦🏽‍♂️

🤦 Salary caps reduce the growth of labor costs and force fiscal discipline upon teams. 🤨 With or without salary ceilings, teams still decide on their own what limits they'll place on amounts and lengths of their compensation spending. 📈 🌪️ The real challenges are staggering over time the expensive contracts for very top talent and avoiding inflationary compensation spirals for middling talent, in certain key positions, such as QB, LT, WR, DE, and CB.

I'd love to see a quarterback salary cap. Making that cap a percentage of the overall cap would make the process simpler. I wouldn't create any special way for a player to get some "super cap" compensation. If the team makes the playoffs, the players should get extra pay for playing those games anyway. I wouldn't leave anything up to a vote of reporters.

You said a really great point about the media voting influencing how business works. It’s actually given the NFL to become diluted with unproven people that call themselves special. Eli manning had a SOLID career . Not a hall of fame career. But he’ll get in I’m sure

a qb salary cap is a terrible idea because it screws over the most important and harest to find position

There has to be something done that allows teams to keep a player at any position so that when they hit top five percent of others at the same position are making the club picks up fifty percent of the contract we have and will have six guys that are going to the top of player contract we can't keep ceedee Parsons Dak diggs bland and several positions on the o line that are going to be top five there is no way to keep everyone and stay under the cap. Leave it up to each team to resign players that basically are top contracts and if they want to keep him at fifty percent cones in a signing bonus and their remaining is from the cap

The fact that this is being entertained is so insulting to all the other players on the team. Football is supposed to be the ultimate team sport or we’re acting like the quarterbacks are worth how much more than other positions. It’s not just a quarterback positions. It’s the whole next man up mentality.

Someday he’s going to have a big time player or two get seriously injured on one of these short term max contracts. Then some of his clients might start to question this strategy.

The Jones family would not support the salary cap to keep money in their pockets.
