Whilst I appreciate that he did pay the former owners what I'm assuming was a reasonable price, I wish that the Egyptian government just bought out the company instead and then with full ownership nationalized it. Mind you I'm not super crazy about the Suez canal either way, I just think that if the Egyptian government could afford it then that would've been for the best in terms of avoiding any conflict.
Nasser was going to use the funds for his infrastructure projects, while the British and French investors are just making more money to help them get richer. Morally, i think Nasser was right
I totally agree with you in principle, Bernard. Reality is a lil more tricky haha. Nasser would've been rejected if he asked the French/British to buy it outright - I'm 99.9% sure of it.
Comment Dec 06, 2023. Recollections from a British press release at the time....Britain & Egypt had an agreement that Britain & France would manage the canal for 10 years. After a few years Nasser decided Egypt should take full control. Efforts by Britain & France to enforce the original agreement were denied by Nasser who intended to retain all income from international ships. Britain sent new troops to enforce the original agreement, however Nasser responded by ordering the canal to be blocked by sinking cargo ships. This blockade prevented any use of the canal and the following events are including in the Hikmar History channel's video.
3:40 that footage taken in 1958 and the man who sit behind president Naser it Syrian president Shukri al-Quwatli and the declaration of union between Syria and Egypt and forming United Arab Republic
I remember watching the episode of The Crown about the Suez Crisis, many say it marked the end of Britain's status as a great power. I'm not so sure about that, but it was definitely a big blow for them.
23 November 2023. Thanks for the interesting information. It seems that a lot of people do not know the full history of such an important man made structure.
It is funny to me that France and the UK were willing to go to war over the expropriation of their property... a canal on Egyptian soil, expropriated by the Egyptians, a matter entirely internal to Egypt.
I'm sure they felt a sense of proprietary ownership, seeing as they did initiate its construction. But I can definitely see the Egyptian point of view as well.
I would like to add, that the geological history of the Sues goes back a bit further. At some point in pre-history the Red Sea and the Mediterranean was connected, and if my memory is not wrong humans where inhabiting the region during that point (not sure if there is any evidence if trade was happening by that point)
I am pretty sure Romans connected it by building a canal through some river .....it dried up....could have been Muslim states I can't remember correctly
Sorry to say but this is wronge at least 9k year ago the great Iran of the Phoenix flag build the canal fromKing Dariosh so no French and things so stop giving wronge information
Do you think it was right for Nasser to nationalise the Suez Canal?

Tricky subject for sure in todays highly focused capitalism.

What if the GB/Fr were gonna use the money from it for their own infrastructure projects in GB/Fr?
The more I watch your channel the more I realize how little I know. And that's a good thing.
Haha thanks!
Awesome video dude! Clear and concise information about on the most important stretches of water both in history and today.
Thank you as always, Chinmay. I knew as an architect, this would get your attention!

Not necessarily the end but it kind of showed everyone what was already true - British prominence on the world stage had declined considerably.
Also watching it after the CROWN. i am in that episode lol.
Did you made this video after the recent Suez canal blockade incident?
Nope... total coincidence

Darius completed the canal, not his current route through the Nile and took Egypt's annual tribute by sea.

The Red Sea and the Mediterranean were connected? Dang that would've been kool!
yes there are evidences of that, especially the city ruins that are found along side the present Suez Canal

I can't remember correctly
