Howie Long was drafted by the Raiders when they were in Oakland in 1981 and then he continued his career with the Raiders until 1993 and I'm still a huge fan of his for a long time since 1981
Steve Largent is probably the most underrated player. Yes he made the Hall of Fame, but he is still relatively unknown. Led the NFL in receiving yards until Jerry Rice beat him. Was the reason Rice wanted number #80 Had arguably the greatest hands of all time. When Largent retired, he held all major NFL receiving records, including: most receptions in a career (819), most receiving yards in a career (13,089), and most touchdown receptions (100). He was also in possession of a then-record streak of 177 consecutive regular-season games with a reception. He also holds the distinction as the first receiver in NFL history to achieve 100 touchdown receptions in his career.
Greg Townsend got all those sacks because of Howie Long being double team and sometimes triple team it freed up Townsend to rush the passer but Greg Townsend was a great defensive end make no mistake about it with Howie Long being the Wildman and then throw in Lyle Alzado aggression with a short temper and you got one hell of a group on the defensive line
That entire defense is so underrated. You got Bill Pickell too. The insane cornerback duo of Hayes and Haynes, and The LBs like Rod Martin, Matt Millen, and of course the great Ted Hendricks0
He was Great 👍 Very intelligent man. On the field &off the field just listen to him speak on sundays Says it all about the character of the man. Class act. 👍🇺🇸
The difference between Howie Long and other great Raiders is that he was as tough as any of them but he wasn't a head case. Howie always had class. Something that was blatantly lacking in other Raiders and fans as well. Case in point, the guy in this video with the Raider shield on his melon.
There's a belief (untrue) you have to be a psycho to be a Raider. Not so. Long, Jim Plunkett, Art Shell, Mike Haynes, Daryl LaMonica, Tom Flores (probably others) were 'eagle scouts' Others like Matt Millen, Skip Thomas, Cliff Branch, Ken Stabler, Reggie Kinlaw, they were what's known as 'characters...with character.' Then there were the psychos, too numerous to mention. What I mean is the Raiders just wanted you to be yourself (WHATEVER that was) and then play your guts out on Sunday.
He’s # 1 !!!!!!! A phenomenal player...he was a BEAST!!!! His sack record hasn’t been broken and he had the most sacks before they were recorded as a stat!! NOBODY can even touch him...controversial? I say it’s only GREATNESS!!!! He’s a one of a kind!! There will never be anyone like him again!!!🧡🧡🧡
Honestly, I don’t mind Howie being this high cuz of the simple fact he played his whole career with the raiders. Marcus Allen, Ken Stabler, Ted Hendricks didn’t
Not a Raiders fan, but Howie will always be my favorite man to have donned the silver and black. In my family, he made my grandma a fan of the team (long before their move to Vegas, the area my grandparents live now; back then, they lived in New York) in his heyday not just because he was a great player, but because she had a crush on him, too!
He's number ONE. Nobody dominated as a Raider more than Howie. Even Shell and Upshaw, they got beat regularly. But when you watched Howie play he changed every opponents gameplan.
Old Man Willie played the majority of his days as a RAIDER so basically he was a RAIDER through and through. Mike Haynes played half his career with the Patriots and the second half with the RAIDERS so you could go either way. A last example would be Jerry Rice, he would be considered as a 49er despite his 3 or so years as a RAIDER (3 excellent years, but he wasn't a 'long time' RAIDER that you would compare with other 'long time' RAIDERS).
Lyle Alzado was a part of "orange crush" defense and a certified PED user, so off the list he goes. Although, they are quite hypocritical with those lists as most NFL players are on PEDs these days.
I'm probably in the minority but I'd call Howie Long the #1 RAIDER player in team history. From his rookie season to his final game Long was a beast, and everyone knew it. He was relentless, a pass rushing DL that could play NT and the run with the best of them. IMO only a handful of guys, like Joe Greene and Reggie White, are ahead of Long... and not by much.
SuedeStonn If you know the Raiders, you'd know that Jim Otto, Ken Stabler, Art Shell, Gene Upshaw, Jack Tatum, Willie Brown, Lester Hayes, Mike Haynes, Marcus Allen, and hell even Cliff Branch had bigger impacts for the lore of the Oakland Raiders than Howie.
www.pro-football-reference.com/players/L/LongHo00.htm ONLY 84.0 SACKS PATHETIC I'm a Raider fan there were many games where he didn't even make a assist The only people that say hes good are white fans
Looking on his highlight i realize that Howie Long is a smart player, he utilize his arm to "throw" offensive linemen and Quarterback like in Judo or Jujitsu instead of "colliding" his body to his opponent in order to bring them down, no wonder he is one of the few players from the 80's who is the healthiest
Do you remember that 5 sack game Khalil Mack had against the Donkeys when he took over the game? That was Howie about 4 times a year. Townsend got more sacks because he played his entire career with Howie getting double and triple teamed next to him.
Over 80 sacks at left defensive end, right defensive end & nose tackle in his 13 year NFL career with the Oakland Raiders/Los Angeles Raiders in the 1980s & early 1990s 13 years is a pretty long time Not bad for a 2nd round pick out of Villanova
Yeah NFL Films didn't distinguish that Howie Long is an "LA RAIDER", his power and competitiveness was straight out of the "Oakland" Raiders playbook, but he played in Los Angeles other than his rookie campaign in Oakland. He helped define LA Raider football.
If we ranked raiders players based on how much of a true raider they were, lyle alzado would be #1, no doubt. Absolutely murderous on a football field, and lyle was damn nice

I am also putting long time voice of the Raiders-legendary broadcaster- Bill "Holy Toledo" King on the list. I probably missed a couple.
Thirteen seasons isn't long enough? People are upset because Howie was smart enough to get out with his health intact.
Thirteen years in the NFL playing the line is amazing, you're right, he got out in one piece, at the right time.
If you end up having multiple back surgeries, both knees and hips replaced AND suffering from CTE as a bonus....you were a great player otherwise meh
Well Michael Lombardi was the one who said that so i took it as blasphemy anyway
