  • We are back with a review of one of our long-time favorite books/authors. This is one of the books that Robb and Livius bonded over before this podcast was a gleam in our eyes (yikes, that conjures disturbing images of the podcast's creation). After the review, we discuss the film adaptation The Ninth Gate, and some other books by Perez-Reverte.
Next episode, we've been threatening it for some time, and now it's happening! Winkie by Clifford Chase is our next book, as well as the next episode you'll get to hear!

El Club Dumas was first published in 1993, The Ninth Gate came out in 1999.

This book is so much better then the movie. Also it made me interested in dumas and check the three musketeers and other classics, such as devil in love.

Ohio also has a Paris. An unincorporated township.
And I'm given to understand that Ohio is a hotbed of literary intrique.
There has been a noticeable decline in the availability of paperback copies of "The Thunderbirds" at yard sales. Eyebrows have been raised.

"Green Eyes" is what Corso names the girl when he encounters her on the train.

No mater what you may think of Polansky, he made a brilliant adaptation of this book. The book itself is tiresome with several references to other books thrown around that do not really fit into the plot, the whole Napoleonic sub plot and his great great grand father in Napoleon army. the Ceniza(ashes to ashes) brothers chapter is brilliant but subtle. The movie cuts most that out(secrete society Club Dumas). So if you like the pointless tangents of the book, then you will not like the movie. The translation itself is missing some of the more subtle language twists, like reading Don Quixote translated to English misses out a lot of the Spanish language idioms.
This is one case where the film is far far better than the plot twisting of two separate plots by the author. By the end, you will realize this book was 50% about a plot you do not care at all about and its the secrete society of Club Dumas that makes this book a waste of time. If you came to read the book because you liked the movie.. stop.. do not waste your time with this book.. the Polanski film is far far better, and edited out all the Club Dumas and 3-Musketeers to create a far more enjoyable experience. The ending of the 9-gates is also belter in the film than the book.. !! If you love books about books then the Club Dumas is for you.. especially anything about Alexander Dumas was interesting, was Dumas really the writer of The Three Musketeers or mostly done by his co-writer.. interesting twists there.. then this is a must read for you.

I have a completely opposite take. The book is brilliant to me, .. possibly my favorite work of fiction ever. I've read it a half-dozen times. The movie, which I hoped to like, was a disappointment. To me. Part of that is based on the movie completely abandoning the Club Dumas angle of the story, which was brilliantly entwined with the occult story in the book. Regarding the ending? I'll take the book -- which, for careful readers at least, carries the big reward of a puzzle solved (with a wink and a nod). No offense to you -- different strokes, different folks and all that. But I got the book over the movie this time by a long shot.

I read this book twice and found it doesn't really have an ending it feels like it cuts off or the story just stops. Maybe I compare it too much to the movie ending of Roman Polanski The Ninth Gate
