Hard bags for the open road and mild off road. Good change. No broken bones for Ashley. You all be safe. Bubble rap Freddie. Get well soon. Doc rocks peace love to all.😎🏍🇺🇸
Smart! I like your idea of being able to bang out a hard bag. Showing what the hard bags can do to a leg is a game changer for us along with your suggestion that after a drop or two the hard bags get less waterproof.
I have the Mosko Moto 35L panniers and 40L duffle bag along with the locking straps that allow me to cinch down and lock the bags tight so they are less likely to be stolen or rifled through. I weave my straps through the beavertail and the locking bar and I can lock my jacket and helmet to the bag when I leave my bike to go into a store or restaurant. I definitely recommend getting the locking straps from Mosko Moto as they will key the locks all the same.
Agree soft bags are the way to go, and the best thing about having multiple bikes I keep the duel sport packed with all gear and ready to go , can make spur of the moment trail riding, camping plans and take off in minutes 👍
Good info. I have hard bags on my Chief DH. I noticed off the beaten track soft might be the way to go but 95% of my rides are not off road. So hard is my fav
Thanks for the Video Adam.. sold the Roadglide about a year ago and have been looking for a new direction.. and fell in love with the GS Adventure.. Will be purchasing soon.. and have been beating up the bag question. Stay safe brother.
I use a gun case for my electronics in my soft bags. Also, you can insert dry bags with your belongings inside the soft bags and just pull out the inside bag and take it inside with you for security
@@adamsandoval Great, thanks for the reply and it looks like they are a US. Company in Oregon. Maybe you were there in person I think. I really enjoyed your ride. You're a cool guy and I'm sure everyone that follows you feels like they've known you for a long time. Mark
I am in the same situation. Have the hard bags, but going to keep them. Looking into proper protective boots. I feel that is where the money is better spent. New decent bag set runs about $1K. Decent boots, about half that.
In my opinion.. Soft bags are the way to go. 1. When they are full they are full. But when empty you can roll them up . 2. Soft bags are lighter. 3. You can use them as a pillow if need be. 4. In a crash the hard cases can be bent out of shape and not close or seal correctly. 5. Its less likely to get your leg pinned back by them in a crash. And my list could go on In my opinion the hard case only has 2 pluses. 1. They are more secure from thieves trying to steel your things. 2. Won't tear when driving by sharp objects ( branches , rocks etc). Lol final note: I LOVE MY SUZUKI DR650!
Thanks for the great videos guys! I was worried about those hard bags on the TAT...just glad it was Freddy’s ankle and not Ashley’s.😬 It’s a great story when your buddy gets scuffed up a bit...girlfriend not so much!
The hard bags kind of look cool. But after Freddie's tip over I can definitely see the disadvantage to the hard bags. I believe you will find the soft bags can carry more also. When we tour on my Victory Cross Country I still pack my stuff in those vacuum bags. Air and water tight.
Sensible decision for hard core off roading Adam. Anything else hard luggage for the security aspect with inner bags. Enjoyed the series of vids. Hope Sturgis goes off peacefully.
Great job.Adam seeing what happened it would be easy to bash the hard bags completely! But you didnt and showed the good for both..I was the guy to trash the hard bags after Freddy getting hurt. Great video
I have the same bike as Ashley’s with the Atacama bags, made by Mosco Moto. So far, so good👍. Being a new adventure bike rider, I had a major fear of breaking my leg with the hard cases. I do have a hard top case, if I need to lock up something valuable.
Cost factor is huge. I just ordered Touratech hard luggage. My Tiger 900 will be more utilitarian with little zero off-road, just dirt road. I'll be going to the grocery store in style at least.
I was pondering getting softbags as side luggade but the ever increasing insecurity all around me (breaking into cars, stealing bikes, etc.) made me go for hard luggage...
On the bigger Adventure bikes, the hard bags may be ok for highway and light duty gravel road use. But, on any off road bike for true “off-road” use, regardless of size, soft bags are the only way to go. There is a no pair of boots that will protect you if pinned by the hard luggage. Not worth the risk. Adam and Freddy were very fortunate to have support close by and get him help. Having Doc, a military medic, on the team was very good in this case, but highly unusual. Ride safe my friends! Have a great time in Sturgis. Looking forward to your next video!
Broke my fibula right at the ankle with hard bags on my BMW R1200 last October in sand. Didn’t know what I was doing. Definitely going to get some soft bags. Until then staying on the tarmac riding the Harley-Davidson.
If I had to start from scratch on my panniers. I would definitely go soft for mild to wild off roading. For just some dirt roads I have found my hard panniers to work just fine. But yes, no joke on the safety aspect. Soft panniers are far safer...
I gotta get some soft bags. I have the hard bags that I purchased with the bike and they're serving me well for now, but I do hope to be doing some more adventures in the future and I will be getting soft bags. For now, I am using my bike as my only transportation at school and need the security. I don't see it as really a difficult choice at this point - both hard and soft bags have their place, but neither do it all really.
Soft for sure when trailing or mix. An important consideration you didn't mention is the effect of spills and vibration through the panniers to the sub-frame. Check out Mondo Enduro and Terra Circa for some luggage lessons. Thanks for vid.
I still think I’d opt for a lighter enduro bike like a Husky 501, with a desert fuel tank, and pack Light with only something on my back, as though I’m hiking the Pacific Coast Trail. Bulky bags out on the sides of those bikes look like ones balance and lack of maneuverability is totally compromised. I might be wrong, but it just does look the right part.
Broken legs are no good. Funny thing about riding off road, we fall a ton. I guess when you fall one could train themselves get your legs out of the way of the hard bags...
I have both and I've found that when I fall over, the soft luggage allowed my foot to be sometimes crushed and even pinned me in a couple rides, where the hard luggage offers room to prevent crushing and or trapping me.. I have never had my foot pinned between the ground and the hard case, so maybe it's a preference, but I find it safer for hard luggage..
Soft bags only for me. Mosko has quick detach so offloading to a hotel is simple. I never keep electronics in a pannier. They only go in my top duffle where the only way any damage could occur is if I loop the bike.
With motorcycling I think the best part of doing it wrong, is getting to do it all over right, assuming you don't break a leg on the trip - poor Freddie.
@@adamsandoval Adam, please Let me know how much you want for 2 banged up hard bags? Caught two homeless crooks, fresh from jail trying to pick up my entire bike. One laughed and as he jogged off said it's bigger than the smaller bikes I went jail for stealing. ✌

I doubt I would even bother owning a bike like that if I wasn’t doing off road riding so staying at a hotel is probably a stretch anyway. Soft bags all the way for the safety and looks. Those hard bags look like you’re doing milk deliveries or something. Just my opinion. Thanks
If I was to ride the route you have just finished and what I have seen them go through, I would pick soft bags , from your lesson learned with Freddy, that’s no fun.
You would be amazed at the security a bike cover provides. Thieves like to see (or how they will steal) what they are going to steal and will typically ignore a covered bike. Granted, if I had a computer or drone I’d take them out. I always cover my bike if it’s goi g to sit. I like soft luggage. A crash is just too hard on mounts. I’d also avoid soft luggage that have “quick mounts” they can brake too. I keep several straps and can strap down soft luggage. Not so easy with hard panniers. Soft luggage also has a lot more storage flexibility if u really need it.
