This is what ai have been working for 6 months in the cave. Well, you basically nailed it. Mine was 2 studs wider in all lengths, which made it difficult to incorporate into my compact car. Well done, hats off.

It's been a long time since I first started to thing about making a super small Lego Steper... Worked for hours on failed prototypes, forgot about it for 2 or 3 months and sat on my chair Thursday, in five minutes I broutgh out this functional prototype ^^ I was so glad I made it Haha ! Mind is wierd as it works for you asleep ;)
And so glad it helps You out too !

I built this one straight away, nice to know that it works really well with a gearbox, I couldn't figure out how to put the original compact shifter on my gearboxes then I saw this! Cool vid, 😀

For my lego 8109's 2 speed transmission, I'm going to mount this sideways and use the original dog clutch lever on the output

Very cool. Very different!! I wonder how i could use this in one of my builds.... could it be motorized?

Well, yes actualy, using a Power Function servomotor !

it looks cool but what can it be used for

Another alternative: you could use the gear with 4 pinholes in place of the wheel that the the stepper lever moves

Could you give me a photo or the code number of this part, because I'm a bit confused of which gear you're talking about :/
      Thank you !

Please could you do a video on a simple modular car system. Like a gearbox, steering axle, drive axle etc. That all fit together in any combination!

I have been seeing all these different variations of these stepper mechanisms since the 42056 rolled out (almost literally) from LEGO's production sites, and yet, I cannot figure out how it would be possible to make a 5+R sequential gearbox vaguely similar in principle... I understand how to change the stepper from 90o movements to 60o (from 360/4 to 360/6 degrees), but how do you get the linkages to work? In a 2 clutch ring gearbox (= 4 speeds), both clutch rings have to be either engaged / disengaged at the same time, but on a 3 clutch ring gearbox (= 6 or 5+R speeds), you always have 2 active rings (in the process of engaging / disengaging), and one inactive (remains where it was)... I know this is not very relevant to the video, but do you have any ideas on that? Great work on the video, by the way, I love the very compact reversed lever....

I was thinking if I could make it on an (R 1 2 3 4 5) arrangement. The arrangement you proposed will give me either (R1 R2 F1 F2 F3 F4) or (R1 R2 R3 F1 F2 F3), if I understood correctly (R=reverse, F=forward gears). Plus I would think that the clutch would add more complexity, trying to "align" the operations of the 2 three-speed gearboxes (I'm assuming a single clutch ring for each, with the 3 gears being essentially the 3 positions the ring can have on the connector (pushed forwards, pushed backwards or in the middle)), which explains why you'd need the clutch. The issue I'm afraid of is, if you don't have a neutral in the middle position of the driving ring on the connector, you need a separate connector with a ring and clutch gears as a clutch. So... OK, 2 rings for the 2 gears, plus another 1 for the change... that doesn't sound too bad actually... Do you think it would be possible to have only 1 of the 2 3-speed gearboxes include 1 reverse gear, cause otherwise I'll have to end up with 2 R gears or none....

Maybe using liftarms to move the gear catches from the top (sort of like Sheepo did it in his sequential gearboxes, and attach them to a shaft with pulley wheels on it (with the 6 holes) and have it so only 2 of the holes are the top / low end movement of the catch (where the gears engage), and the other 4 being in neutral for the particular driving gear. If they're spaced out correctly (like 120o for each driving ring from each other), that could work in theory, couldn't it? With this 6-step stepper, I mean... I don't know, my thoughts are running wild, haha.

Well I have already questionned myself about this, there are actualy, my solution, was ISMG 1 actualy !
The Infinitely Stackable Modular Gearbox system I've been developping for a year now is coming tu YT soon but I've already uploaded a more "ancient" version of it last year : only have to connect two modules in a row for 6 speeds available and only two clutches used ! This way, the problem of having 3 clutches for 6 speeds is eliminated... but I assume it is a bit complicated to apply as the video is crapy and no plans are available for you to download :/
That said, To me, the best solution would be to make combinations of gears using a differential, but the problem is considerably hard, I actualy tried out the different combinations and wasn't able to find out a well working sequence with all speeds in line, neither for the 6 speed nor the 5 + R :/ (One problem remains, the differentials tend to redirect the spin through the void in the axles on neutral sadly)
I managed to figure it out for the ISMG sequence though, tell me If you're interested in an "In deep explanation ^^
With the ISMG, you'll be able to make 9 speed, 27 speed, 89 speed, any power of 3 depending on the number of modules ! I might upload a sequential 6 speed and 5 speed + R In a near future (just the time to design the matrices holding the gearbox, which should not take long)
Oh ! I just had an Idea ! You could program the sequence using chain links and caterpillar links alternated, activating one after another the levers ! Though you would have to code two strings of information (one to activate levers in one direction and one for the other).
While waiting for the next solution, Don't mind asking me anything, I'm always pleased to help ;)
      Best Regards LTM
