She unwittingly brought about her own downfall over her handling of the Brexit saga, and although I'm pleased the UK has left the EU, it's a shame it took events directly affecting another country to dethrone her when the Germans have had ample opportunity to get rid of her themselves.
Over the course of her long term she has been a good and successful leader. Every long serving leader has become unpopular towards the end, it always happens, but it does not mean her entire term was bad.

Sometimes you need to sacrifice something and Merkel in my eyes sacrificed the wrong thing (The EU was strained, far right parties gained traction etc) Sometimes you cant have your cake and eat it too I would like to have seen referendums about the issues. It helps to democractically legitimize or de-legitimize such things. If the citizens of Germany in this case voted for taking in refugees possible models could look like this : The first priority should have been to absolutely make sure there are no drawbacks for the local populations of the respective countries apart from costs. I would like to remind you of the 2015 cologne new years eve and other horrible incidents I would not like to list. So there needs to be clear and concise standards. 1. Only people with verified identities should be let in that are thoroughly documented with no criminal background Scanning people so thoroughly ultimately means casting people aside without sufficient information but minimizing risk is the key issue here. It legitimizes the process a lot more 2. Asylum is something that should not lose its integrity so only people from regions with ongoing war are eligible (This is kinda tied to the first point since its not known in some instances where someone came from) and it should be clearly separated from migration. Those who enter need to enter with the expectation to return to their home country except a tiny minority with higher educational attainment. This also helps for the respective countries economies to recover and regain stability. Brain drain is a serious issue. Immigration and asylum should be largely separated. Germany is also not a classical country of migration so the line between asylum and immigration in the US for example might not be necessarily that clear to work. Its a country conflicted about its own identity. Whether you can easily become German is up for debate unlike becoming a US American 3. Talking about the number of people the country wants to let in. Countries have limited resources so the system should never take in more that it can handle. Massively funding institutions responsible for refugees as well. Refuge ends in the first safe country upon arrival so this is largely a humanitarian service. But in order for such service to still be accepted it shouldnt cause damage so that people dont try to de-legitimize asylum. Overall I am more for direct democracy For instance our foreign policy needs to be in line with peace and stability. I dont think the average German wants to have an interventionist foreign policy yet we spent time in Afghanistan. Representative democracy does a bad job since some key areas are totally ignored because you can only order the whole package that is the political party.

Granted every plan has flaws, problems, drawbacks but there are better models for dealing with the situation. I would like to have seen referendums about the issues. It helps to democractically legitimize or de-legitimize such things.
If the citizens of Germany in this case voted for taking in refugees possible models could look like this :
The first priority should have been to absolutely make sure there are no drawbacks for the local populations of the respective countries apart from costs. I would like to remind you of the 2015 cologne new years eve and other horrible incidents I would not like to list.
So there needs to be clear and concise standards.
1. Only people with verified identities should be let in that are thoroughly documented with no criminal background
Scanning people so thoroughly ultimately means casting people aside without sufficient information but minimizing risk is the key issue here. It legitimizes the process a lot more
2. Whether you can easily become German is up for debate unlike becoming a US American

Just imagine Hitler come today and see the today's Germany according to you what will he think...
Hitler would instantly kill himself if he saw today's Germany.
He would be upset and rightly so.
Germany is a mgrnt shthle
Brimstone & Fire I for one would not side with hitler.
@@the-based-jew6872 Far from a shidhole
Actually Hitler admire Islamism. He used to say : "The peoples of Islam will always be closer to us than, for example, France". Remember that muslims and Hitler share many things, for example, they both hate Jews. Also the Fuhrer admired the subordination of religion to the state and religion ruthless tratment of minorities. So I think he would be happy to force everyone to convert to Islam.
Did lots of dmg to Germany
That guy in the thumbnail is not German
Germans will think thank fuck she's gone.
Immigrants will be crying.
Why they ain't going anywhere.
She didn't even bother to show Laschet amoung the party leaders 😂
She has been in office longer than Thatcher and May - COMBINED.
Strong woman
“Promoting tolerance” means accepting anyone the govt lets into your country
No that's just whoring out your country
What will we miss about Angela Merkel? Nothing!
Nothing I’m happy that she is gone
I live in Berlin Mitte ( center) , I can confirm sometimes I get 2G mobile signal 😂, and I don’t have any or very poor connection in the metro.
It's also a place with lots of immigrants right?
I'll miss her too, but she has to go and she's done plenty for the country and change has to happen
Good timing. Few know when they should move away from politics , especially when everything will get unexpectedly complicated and nasty in the time ahead
Could have been better, especially many germans argue, Merkel should have moved away four years earlier... Nevertheless she managed the pandemic quite well.
Nothing!
Merkel was the reason why I was FOR Brexit
for me she was one of the reasons why i voted against Brexit. haha
I've shot myself in the foot. Now look, Angela! That's what you got of it!
I'm not a German but I will miss her
Nothing, she was long overdue
Never really liked hitlers granddaughter at all why is this deemed important news too Brits?
“Think Germany and you probably think Angela Merkle”
Me: No… I think of engineering genius
Everyone else: *thinks of nazi Germany

Some wonder if the right side won.
Most people think of ww2
I wonder what world leader has a PhD in quantum chemistry...
I find her very impressive. She was very successful leader
What I won't miss is the BBC's hero-worship of Angela Merkel 🤮
Although I approved of her open-borders policy, which was a great kick-start for the Brexit Campaign 👍😁

Well I'm sure we'll get an impartial view from the BBC, interviewing people from across the political spectrum. Ha ha.
Yes i think the 'barmy bullshit club"will give us balanced reporting, you can be guaranteed of that
They do, they just don’t quite get to the 1% who share your views.
@@gweilospur5877 No, it is more like 50% who support my view (like Brexit).

The woman's most long lasting achievement is to make Germany brown and less Germanic
nobody cares. she did nothing to improve germany.
Their country, as she has destroyed it
I remember being in Berlin during the Federal Election of 2005 when I was 20. I am 36 now - that gives an idea of how long her tenure has been - though I think it still falls under Bismarck, Kohl and Adenaeur
The only other places where the leaders have such long tenure are: China, Russia and the banana republics…😂😂😂
When I think of Germany, I think of
Bayern Munich
