Biggest advice: Activate level restarts. It's on by default so don't think of it as taking the fun out or it being the easy way. Game is random so it's unfair sometimes.
    3 main points:
Buy the skills - The name is misleading, it's actually your troops ultimate move! Here's how I'd review them:
    - Plunge (shields) best stun
    - Charge (pikes) best damage
    - Volley (archers) best range
They are all worth the 7 coins, and you don't have to upgrade them. They are amazing as they are unlocked (you can save up for endgame). Just use them early and wisely, you saw the recharge time.
Learn your items - This part is me ranking the items so you're informed:
1, Warhammer - Infinite use. Almost one shot. Basically a second ultimate. Melee only. Best.
2, Ring of Command - Not that good early game. Perfect for archers, okay with infantry, useless with pikes. The pricey carry.
3, Jabena - Perfect early game. Jack of all trades. Free. Let's you use any commander twice during a round.
4, Bomb - Jack of all trades. Needs upgrading. Skill (timing) required. Almost one shot.
5, Philosopher's Stone - Only amazing with one perk. Almost perfect early game. Upgrading is essential.
6, War Horn - Needs upgrading. Melee only. Only in emergencies. Heal without the wait.
7, Mines - Mines. Bad on shores. Bad with half the enemies. Needs upgrading. Mines.
8, Holy Grail - Resurrects one commander. Only in emergencies.
Archers need investing - For the worst troop in the game, they're pretty important in the endgame. Archers are the main counter to numbers, big reason is they take enemies out before they land. Base archers are almost useless as you saw, but they are great with the perks, skills, upgrades, and items that you have to find and give them.
Little facts: Archers can actually counter shield bearers on the boats, you just have to shoot from the sides.
Pikes are useless while moving, you have to bait the enemy out by getting close then setting up a square back (skill required).
Islands with commanders are not more dangerous. Flat islands and islands with items are more dangerous.
The enemy types on an island not equal how many there will be. The houses do.
