Hi I followed you code and it is excellent, the problem I am having is that the products I am trying to use this on has variants, when there are varients, the textarea message does not appear in the shopping cart only the variant selected. Brilliant and very clear tutorial, thanks so much! So helpful! I noticed some apps were able to update the product price when a checkbox was selected, live on the product page, but I haven't found any tutorial or Shopify forum that mentions how this could be done. In fact, most say it cannot be done without installing one of the premium apps...but then, how are they doing it? It must be possible. In your example your engraving field does not increase the price, it would be very helpful to see an example where the field has a price attached to it, and how that price shows up across the cart/checkout/emails etc.
That would be quite different. If you want the engraving to have a price then it needs to be a product. You create an 'engraving' product in your back-end and then write some code to automatically add that product to the cart together with the main one whenever a checkbox is checked and add to cart is clicked. I will be making this tutorial eventually but its not so easy.

So you use this method to add a block for a custom message for the autographed copy. But you want to hide the block if the ebook is selected. I'm trying to figure out how to do that. Any thoughts?
Your'e welcome! The easiest way to handle that yourself would be to split the product into two separate products - the physical book and the ebook. Alternatively an even simpler solution is just add some text above the field like "Custom message: (does not apply to ebook):". Hiding the field dynamically when the ebook variant is selected is possible with javascript, but you would need some web development experience to do it.
