The carboniferous period seen the world covered in forest which in turn created more food for plant eaters which in turn created more food for meat eaters which in turn helped to reduce CO2 levels. So I wouldn't worry about using fossil fuels, instead worry about cutting down forest, because without forests CO2 levels will rise faster then burning fossil fuels ever could.
