Really missing you watching this James. Pete and Jimmy are my favorite guitarists and Who, Zep, Stones my favorite bands. Always wanted to know how to play all of those songs and you do it in a no fuss, no b.s., very comfortable manner. These videos (guitars, questions, etc.) are spectacular as well. Hope all is well with you. All the best ...
Was taking the Lines on my Face lesson and admiring your skill, brilliant to teach the underlying chord patterns with the solo sections. So cool. I don't know how you do it Mr James but I have learned and improved my playing over the years with you and I just want to Thank You.
I have a schecter tele I bought from a roommate in 82,83,or 84 not exactly sure. Lots of guys rotated in and out of that house. Always guitars lying around. Had a PA system set up there etc. Anyway I loved the looks and bought it and still have it. We called it a Pete Townsend Schecter telecaster. I’ve never heard the name Saturn. I play mostly acoustic 6 & 12 strings so I’ve never really played the schecter. I pulled it out of storage and started playing it occasionally just recently. Amazing guitar. Best looking tele ever imo. It is exactly like this Saturn. I never noticed the two strap buttons til you pointed them out. They’re on mine as well. The differences are: mine has 21 frets, no string tree, and the Schecter decal on the headstock is jet black and smaller. Everything else is exactly the same. The maple neck on mine is creamy with longer wood grains, but still a beautiful neck. I’ve been told that Roger Daltrey was shown a picture of it in 2017 and said he loved the guitars and in fact he said he owns one. Anyway I’m glad I kept it. Paid $500 for it back in the day. Other than some paint missing on the bridge pickup it’s cherry. Very excited to see another Schecter tele on UA-cam. Thanks!
Hi James, I just want to Thank You for your incredible and thoughtful videos. I’m and a huge WHO fan who’s learned how to play so many of Pete’s songs from your channels. Personal favorite is your “Young Man Blues Lesson - The Who”. I also share your passion for his Schecter’s and also have the Black PT, and recently recreated his Goldtop from the 1982 Toronto and 1985 Live Aid shows (complete with Kent Armstrong pickups, etc.) Anyhow, just wanted to let you know there’s many of us watching, appreciating and loving your content. Thanks, Todd
Hey there, This old guy recently came across the "final PT" video never knowing that it even existed. I loved those PT videos and learned so much from them and enjoyed them completely. Most of my own Stones repertoire is a direct result of you pointing me in the right direction. Thanks. You don't need to post this long diatribe but I wanted you to know that I'm glad I've now found and subscribed to the James James thing and look forward to talking to and learning new things from you. Thanks again.
Actually, I was thinking exactly that. Nice find there. I have a Korean PT, really love it. And yes, it's still on ebay. It sounds great, love it. That neck really sets it off, a nice contrast to that jet black finish. OK, I'm a little jealous. :)
Appreciate the info on customs. I almost bought a Fender Tele-Sonic from Canada but couldn't get a firm cost for customs. This one really screams. Congrats JJ
I swear, some of the greatest guitar buy stories come from Japan. Rick Neilsen could write a book about it! Fantastic job. It sounds good and I am sure it looks gorgeous!
Hey James! Long time watcher of the channel- love all the great info and love the new schecter. I have a 84-85 of the same piece. In my exhausting research it seems generally accepted any of tele’s with 22 frets are 86’ +. Mine has 21 which was more common on the PT’s we saw on stage and in all the magazines. No doubt she is a beauty but later than you think I believe. Let me know if you ever wanna have a sidebar and discuss. We def could’ve grown up together- all your Who knowledge is spot on with my experiences coming of age a Who fan. Keep up the good work pal! All the best ;)
I thought all the Dallas guitars were 22 frets. The serial number doesn’t start with a letter, it’s just a number. Whatever it is, I love it. That’s a forever guitar.
Yep that’s exactly how it works, as far as the Japanese brokers. They all try to hustle the same guitars for completely different prices. Beautiful guitar bro congrats on getting it. Sounds great! Happy Holidays to you and yours🤙
Congrats JJ! Glad you’re feeling better! I’ve always wanted a Schecter USA model as well. Closest was a few years ago in NY CL for about $1800. Missed it but that’s ok. Ended up finding a Rich Robinson Es I’d been wanting for a few years in the end! Down to 6 electrics and trying to keep squad low. Even passed up a Hofner Beatle bass locally recently to keep it simple! Cheers!,
Dude you play all the stuff I play and very well didn't know you were a young dude LOL I'm 58 love your channel keep on rockin in the free world Bro Hammer .glad your okay.
As a knopfler fan i always wanted a red and white "strat" dream machine. But i guess that will just have to remain a dream for me never likely to get one. I guess those who have them will, if they have any sense, keep hold of them and they'll become family heirlooms lol
That's really cool. I too have lusted after Schecter ever since seeing Pete play them. I did purchase a new Schecter PT Custom (USA) around 1993 or so. I don't recall all the details, but it had a tung oil finish all over with a yellow tinted body and lightweight swamp ash. It was a great guitar that I regret having traded off for something that wasn't nearly as good. Maybe someday I'll get a Saturn!
Got the new Stones record today, Love it! Are you going to break down the songs? I saw a live version o Angry from the Club show they did the other day. I immediately started jamming on it in Open G tune but I noticed Keith is playing that awesome red 355 and that makes me think he may be playing the lick in Standard . What say you oh powerful guru of all things KEEF?
Love the old school Sabres jersey. The French Connection with Perreault, Robert and Martin, Jerry Korab and Jim Schoenfeld on defense and Roger Crozier in nets - the Golden Age for the Sabres. Great video too.
Great Stuff man. Thanks for pointing out how that japanese brokerage stuff works. Always wondered... More guitar reviews man, Love this channel, Still waiting for the Blackhawks Jersey to make another appearance. LOL!!!
James James nice catch! I saw Pete play most of the show with his black one at the New Haven Coliseum December 15, 1979. I was a fine young lad then. He finished the night with his gold top
Congrats! It's a very cool guitar indeed, even though it'll never be as iconic as Pete's Deluxes and SG Specials it's a close third IMO. I've recently rediscovered the 79-80 tour with Kenney Jones and it's brilliant, the gigs are very long, lots of improv, surprising covers during the encores, and mind-blowing playing by Pete (even though brandy played a large part in that... he's so gaunt, pale and sweaty, the videos from the concerts are sometimes tough to watch)
Great video JJ, super informative. As someone who’s been gearing up to buy his first electric your videos are much appreciated. Side note: wondering if you’ve had experience with HSH or HSS strats? Thinking of getting one
In 1984 i stumbled into L A guitar works on sunset blvd in cali. turned out they were the custom shop for shecter located next to norms rare guitars in reseda california tampa ave.. Tauro built me a custom tele. awesome guitar.
I have similar vintage Schecter Strat. I has a whammy and a locking nut. It was my 2nd guitar and my primary ax for 20 years until I got a PRS. I put classic sounding fender pickups in it a few years ago.
I had a mid-eighties Saturn but it was red. I took the cover off the bridge pickup. In 1991, I had Elliot Easton from The Cars sign it. Sadly, I had to sell it a few years later. Keep an eye out for it. There’s definitely only one like it. Lol!
Congratulation, guitar looks and sounds great. I know a couple people who work at Schecter here in L.A., about 5 miles away. Imown a couple Schecters , they make great guitars, you got a vintage one.
When it's difficult to find what you want . Build your own. Point in question Double bound fiesta red tele with rosewood board heel adj. & parts you actually want.
What’s the fretboard radius do you suppose? Is it like a tele or is it really flat like the modern PT’s? The modern ones have a 16” radius I believe. Which is quite flat. I was curious if the original ones had the same flat fretboard.
Beautiful. I have a red one with rosewood fretboard. I'm trying to find out its history. What does the serial number start with? Mine is A79xx. It is a fantastic guitar. I got it in the late 80s at least 3rd hand.
One thing I really like is that the bridge is flat to the body at the sides. I play by the bridge, so sometimes the standard tele bridge gets a bit annoying.
I have the same guitar. I custom ordered it new about 1984. Black with gold hardware. Ebony fretboard and painted headstock. I still have the paperwork. OUTSTANDING guitar.
@@jamesjames9275 This got me thinking so I found my original catalog and a letter (I wrote them to date the guitar for me) from Gregg Burns at Schecter in 2008 telling me that no records were transferred after a buyout and move from Dallas to LA but based on my serial number of A1113 mine was made, their best guess in the mid/late 1980s.Maybe this can help you date yours.BTW the pickups are called "Super Rock II. The body was either ash or Alder. I have an extra catalog if you want it...
Wow...You live a charmed life when it comes to your guitar acquisitions. That is a very sweet guitar. Is it an optical illusion or were the bridge pickup set too high at one time to cause wear? At other times it appears to be something akin to a string spacer or another bridge? I know that makes little sense. I can't get a good depth of field view and now I see another piece of metal at the backside of the neck pickup which appears to be higher than the pickup. Maybe it is part of the pickup rings? Just looks strange to me. I don't mean that in a bad way either. It's just that I've never seen anything like those. Stay safe...Be well...P.S...Color me oh so surprised that the Sabres are 4-1-1 and beat the Lightning tonight.
Awesome axe I’ve noticed the same guitars with different buyers on the Japanese marketplace it made me Leary of buying one. That roasted Birdseye is gorgeous and that black with ivory color binding gives it a mean hot rod look
Awesome guitar, always wished I had one like Pete's. Thanks for the info so I stop thinking like that. Possibly an American made one in the future but it still won't be like Pete's custom guitars. Saw Pete in 79 and 80 and 82 and 84 Sabers crushed The Lighting tonight!
Hello James, I'm Chris from the UK and I live in a little sea side town called Deal in Kent. I was looking for how to play the Small faces Lazy Sunday afternoon and 2 Videos came up and I watched yours. I also watched your other one regarding starting a new channel because of all the idiotic comments you were getting. While you were mentioning some of the comments one comment you mentioned was someone saying you played the wrong chord or riff in a certain song and you said you learnt songs by listening and playing by ear not by lessons. Which intrigued me. Would you tell me how old you were when you first started and was it electric or accoustic and did you learn chords first and then just listen to songs and pick out the notes and chords. And what was the first song you were able to play. And did you ever get in a rut and on the verge of giving up ?. I know I have. And did you practice every day. And how long have you been playing to get to where you are now which is truly an accomplished guitarist. Im 70 now and I started attempting to play when all you had was a Bert Weeding chord book to learn from no internet in those days. I started when I was 24 and because of various situations never really got time to practice so just started again now and will be learning from your videos. And I love your new guitar and I can tell by the way you are talking about it that you are excited having it. My best accomplishments to date are the Jimmy Page riff from led Zeppelin s Black Dog and the full intro and 12 bar to Johnny B Good and now hopefully Lazy Sunday Afternoon. Please keep your videos coming James. All the best Chris..
Nice JJ, I’d call it a steal. I’ve got an black double bound Schecter PT Diamond, about 10 yrs old, made in China (twin to your black one). Mine was advertised as a ‘factory return/reman’ “new” for $450. Was my first guitar, I knew nothing. Was gorgeous, perfect..., only later did I realize the push-pull pot had been replaced with a standard pot. Aside from that I HATED the neck. Ugly looking maple, no skunk stripe, bigger than a baseball bat and the huge goofy generic headstock with modern Schecter script was awful looking. I finally wore out the first 5 frets (playing all my fancy open chords) till it was unplayable, plus the neck adjustment rod had frozen up. I wasn’t gonna spend $400 to replace the neck in a $500 guitar. Boy did I ever get lucky, I still say Mighty made a mistake- for $125 I received the most beautifully quilted, spotted maple neck I’ve ever seen, with a skunk stripe. Finished it with oil, obtained a correct block type SCHECTER logo, life is good. I guess I play because of PT. I’d never held a guitar, but I couldn’t forget those wicked looking black Schecter Tele’s from the early MTV days and that fat devastating mid-range crunch Pete was getting out of em thru HiWatt heads into Mesa Boogie cabs during the ‘82 tour. So when I saw one on EBay I had to have it!! Just to hang on my wall, lol. After staring at it, taking in all it’s “PT Glory” for a few weeks..., I ‘picked up my guitar and played’. I’m still learning but thanks to people like you, I get a little better every day. I’ve been a Who ‘SuperFan’ since around 1978. My first concert (I was 13) was David Johansen and The Clash opening for THE WHO, 10/13/82 (second night) at Shea Stadium, the night it rained, the show that was fully filmed and released years later on DVD, the night Pete spent most of the show glaring angrily at the audience..., clearly not into it, he DID NOT want to play Shea. Still an Epic show, the power of VOLUME. Seen them many times since. Best show was Jones Beach 7/9/00, Ox was still alive. Again in the pouring rain. Was expecting the ‘Las Vegas Who Review’. Was shocked when ONLY 5 guys (3+ Rabbit and Zach) took the stage..., they turned up LOUD and killed it. I think?? Pete was (at the tail end of) still using his HiWatts (thru Fender cabs). He played obscenely LOUD (and sloppy) that night, trying to cut thru the blowing rainstorm. It was a DRY sound! like I’d never heard from The Who, the wind was really messing with their sound. Pete was in a great mood, he loves the wind, rain, water..., shock and ecstasy! He destroyed his Eric Clapton Strat at the end of WGFA! Methodically and slowly, for all to see, hear and enjoy.., splintered it over his front stage monitor. My Who loyalty finally paid off! I’ll throw the link up here in a bit if u wanna check it out. Thks for all the guitar playing inspiration. Best wishes and be well. ua-cam.com/video/DYa7plh_8gI/v-deo.html
It has a AAA birds eye neck, no name on the headstock, Koa wood body, and under the guard it says made in USA near the pots, I paid $35 and traded a digital camera for it.
I remember seeing Pete Townsend playing that guitar on a video in 1980 when I was 12…Eminence Front or You better you bet….I’ve liked that guitar a looooong time
Rudy's in NYC and Chandler's in Kew, London put those custom Schecters together from parts. And they were fantastic guitars (I have one almost just like the one you're showing, but with a rosewood fretboard). I don't THINK Manny's made any.
So you get like 10 different online entities selling the exact same used guitar or any piece of used gear all at different prices. Then when you buy it nobody else has it for sale anymore because the one you just bought was really the only piece being sold collectively by several online sellers at different prices?
I have to tell you this. I've been watching your videos for 10 years or so. Love yer man. BUT the other night i had a dream. You lived near me in England and I was invited around your house for a party. You of course didn't have a face and your wife was very beautiful but didn't have any arms. Talk about the subconscious soaking into one's dreams. Make of that what you will. :)
Just realized something and all the years you've showed your guitars and played on UA-cam and the different channels: you really aren't one for locking tremoloes Floyd roses or even a regular tremolo bar I noticed almost all your guitars don't have any of those. Not a fan? I was just curious I was just a something I just realized though all the songs you played that even the harder rocking ones I don't remember seeing you scooping out notes or anything at all with a trem.
James, you are the single best teacher on UA-cam. Period. Can't get enough of your videos.
Thanks!
I read that story about Pete's Schecters a few years ago.
Hi James, I just want to Thank You for your incredible and thoughtful videos. I’m and a huge WHO fan who’s learned how to play so many of Pete’s songs from your channels. Personal favorite is your “Young Man Blues Lesson - The Who”. Love the ‘My Guitars’ episodes. Great stories. 👍
Hey there, This old guy recently came across the "final PT" video never knowing that it even existed. I loved those PT videos and learned so much from them and enjoyed them completely. Actually, I was thinking exactly that. Nice find there. I have a Korean PT, really love it. And yes, it's still on ebay. It sounds great, love it. That neck really sets it off, a nice contrast to that jet black finish. OK, I'm a little jealous. :)
Congrats on the new guitar!! I remember the old photos of PT playing these things back in the day. Pretty sweet!
Congratulations James! This guitar is really outstanding
Appreciate the info on customs. I almost bought a Fender Tele-Sonic from Canada but couldn't get a firm cost for customs. This one really screams. Congrats JJ
nice to see you're still alive, hope you and MRs JAmes are still rockin!
Love watching you play! N knowledge of the Guitars
Gorgeous guitar! Well played JJ!
I swear, some of the greatest guitar buy stories come from Japan. Rick Neilsen could write a book about it! Fantastic job. It sounds good and I am sure it looks gorgeous!
Had one too just loved it, you have one that looks immaculate, lucky you..would love to find another one..
I just watched the final PT video as well. Been lovin' 'em for years. Subscribed here and there. I enjoyed reading your comment.
Positivity bro 😎👍
I have a knopler style set up strat from the 80’s! I believe it was the dream machine model
I love how much you love this guitar, I’m the same with my USA tele, I just love everything about it, every time I pick it up haha
Love to have one! Eddie Vedder played a few of these for years.
Very interesting chat there James. Nice one....

Only took 40 years to find one.

Wow man, that's a sweet guitar! I have a few Schecters and one is a PT Blackjack with Duncan 59s and it sounds real nice.
Very interesting , young man, and most informative!!...

Love that guitar !!

Townsend was most likely drunk every day of 1979-80. It was a bad time for him but still productive musically.
Beautiful guitar 🎸!
Great Jersey! Oh yea, nice guitar too! Keep rockin!
I am on the hunt too; I’ve wanted one since 79; it has to be black and the proper job (i.e. "correct" headstock).
There’s one on eBay now, but it has all kinds of issues. They’re hard to find, but personally, I’d stay away from that one.
Great video JJ, super informative. As someone who’s been gearing up to buy his first electric your videos are much appreciated.
Side note: wondering if you’ve had experience with HSH or HSS strats? Thinking of getting one
Never played a Strat with a humbucker, just Teles.
In 1984 i stumbled into L A guitar works on sunset blvd in cali. turned out they were the custom shop for shecter located next to norms rare guitars in reseda california tampa ave.. Tauro built me a custom tele. awesome guitar.

That looks unbelievably good for a 1984 guitar.
NEW STONES RECORD!!!

When it's difficult to find what you want .
Build your own.
Point in question
Double bound fiesta red tele with rosewood board heel adj.
& parts you actually want.
What’s the fretboard radius do you suppose?
Is it like a tele or is it really flat like the modern PT’s?
The modern ones have a 16” radius I believe. Which is quite flat. I was curious if the original ones had the same flat fretboard.

What is your opinion of the schecter Saturn guitar
One thing I really like is that the bridge is flat to the body at the sides. I play by the bridge, so sometimes the standard tele bridge gets a bit annoying.
Cool looking pickup covers on that! Are they metal or plastic?
I have the same guitar. I custom ordered it new about 1984. Black with gold hardware. Ebony fretboard and painted headstock. I still have the paperwork. OUTSTANDING guitar.
One of the best guitars I’ve ever played.

What is that Orange amp in the background with a meter? and key?
It's an amp my brother built for me.
Beautiful neck, well and the rest of the guitar too. I'll look forward to you playing some Who tunes on it, or anything, anyway, anyhow at all.
I remember seeing Pete Townsend playing that guitar on a video in 1980 when I was 12…Eminence Front or You better you bet….I’ve liked that guitar a looooong time
Hello J.J.
Hope things are okay with you?
And just to say Happy New Year…
I'm doing just great. I hope you're the same.
This is the guitar!
Lucky boy, that's a beaut!
Nice guitar JJ. Are those pickups powered?
No.
Rudy's in NYC and Chandler's in Kew, London put those custom Schecters together from parts.
And they were fantastic guitars (I have one almost just like the one you're showing, but with a rosewood fretboard).
I don't THINK Manny's made any.
Sorry you have not posted in a while I miss learning from you Be Well!
Almost bought one in Austin after the “last” Who tour. Maybe 1983? Spongey!
New guitar day 😀
I found a nice PT in my country... it's Monster custom (yes, the drink), so it has a huge green M on it. Just why.
Very cool I have the Asian made one although it’s got an assembled in the USA plate on the back. The first song I attempted on it was eminence front 😂
Go Sabres!
I always wondered about buying from japan
So you get like 10 different online entities selling the exact same used guitar or any piece of used gear all at different prices. Then when you buy it nobody else has it for sale anymore because the one you just bought was really the only piece being sold collectively by several online sellers at different prices?
Yes, that’s how the broker system works.
That’s ridiculous. My wife has an arm.
You’re makin me jealous
Hope the arm is feeling up to speed, so to speak, James James.
Not yet, but getting better.
Japanese eBay ?
I'll have to look it up.
Just realized something and all the years you've showed your guitars and played on UA-cam and the different channels:
you really aren't one for locking tremoloes Floyd roses or even a regular tremolo bar I noticed almost all your guitars don't have any of those.
Not a fan?
I was just curious I was just a something I just realized though all the songs you played that even the harder rocking ones I don't remember seeing you scooping out notes or anything at all with a trem.
I hate 'em. :) I use them only when necessary, like on In the Evening. But I tend to keep them in the case, where they belong.
@@jamesjames9275 lol. Good to hear from you have a safe memorial Day be partying outer you're going anywhere just staying back at home
It's a cracker JJ. No doubt about it.
