    I have the micador artists version from koh I noor and they are really fun, more like ink and I definitely recommend making a pie chart swatch on the middle. I'm inspired to get mine out again!

      I have seen those before and I had been wondering if they have anything to do with the Koh-i-Noor paints. So are they like the same paints, just under a different name?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter 4 роки тому +2

      @@justacatwhocantype I think the micador is supposed to be an artist grade but the colors look a lot like what he searched out there. I like that the micador has a white palette and they have seasonal sets too which are fun. I wonder if all the watercolor disks in the black palettes are the same but I seem to think the kids sets in the black here in the usa were chalky but I cant say for sure as I don't have them.

      @@thefrugalcrafter You know, I am wondering this, too. I was very surprised to see them being so clear and vibrant, since I did also expect them them to be dull, and I believe that I even saw a review of these a while ago, where they actually were very chalky and kind of muted looking. This in confusing me now, I will look into this because I would love to buy this set to color ink drawings, but only if it's as vibrant as in this review.

    Koh-i-noor is a veey old brand that makes a huge range of products. these round sets are a little confusing as there is a watercolour kids set and there is also the anilinky set, which is dye based. i have had these for about five years, and they are as described, quite brilliant, but are definitely not permanent, but ok for journalling or anything not to be hung. I believe they can also be used on fabric, for textile painting, but are not washable. I did read somewhere that you can iron them for some kind of colour fixing. only suitable for things like card making, things like that. I think they are also intended to introduce students to such ideas rather than expose them to more toxic paints while they are learning. I think the reason they are so transparent is for this purpose. I found them fun to use but would not do any serious work with them. Worth doing a fugitive testing on them to see exactly how they do stand up to light exposure. I have the Koh-i-Noor Mondeluz watercolour crayons which are excellent for such a cost effective alternative. The Czech republic had, maybe still does, a huge ceramics and glassware industry, possibly these type of materials were used in educational training for those industries.

      Wow, thank you Lindy for that handful of information. Yes, i agree that these paints are good for sketchbooks and some craftworks. It's cool to learn that these can be used on fabric too. This set will really go a long way so the kids can enjoy it without worrying too much if it gets consumed too quickly. Im curious to try out their pencils especially if the watercolor pencils.

    I'm from Czech Republic and till the year 1996 they used to be higly poisonous, yet we used to use them in school on weekly basis :D They're not aquarelle or watercolours as we know them. They're dyes for colouring photocopies. Previously used for photo colour corrections.

    Another set of paints that I have long been wondering about. These paints are really cheap here in Germany, I can get them for 5 Euros, but I never knew whether I should because while I loved the packaging, I somehow expected them to be chalky and dull. But the opposite is the case! Even though they are not like real watercolors, I think these could be good for coloring in ink drawings. I think I will be getting myself a set of these paints just for that purpose. Thank you very much for your review!

Pls do make sure to get the exact same set as mine, as ive heard there are other variants of this that are chalky. This set is tagged as "brilliant watercolors", so better look for that tagging too. I bought this watercolor set 3 years ago and used until I upgrade to my Van Gogh set. The colors are really strong and transparent, but when painting, it was really hard to make layers. The colors lift from the paper very easily. I don't know if it was my paper or a problem with my set.

    While they dont’ work well for very wet loose landscape kind of paintings but they are very good for detailed illustration work (where you will be digitalising or making prints of rather than selling original artwork. Personally I love them but I’m also very nostalgic about the brand. As a child in Poland, you would get KOH-I-noor products if you showed yourself to be a child who was ‘serious’ about art. 😄

    I read that aniline dyes are toxic, which is why it doesn't say non toxic on the box. Although many seem to think these are for children, personally I wouldn't give them to a child because of the toxicity - kids tend to get paint on their fingers then put their fingers in their mouths.
    I have the 12 set, which are lots of fun for bright colours, but I always wash my hands immediately after using them or while taking a break.

    Thanks for the review of the color wheel. I bought a set of these at a small department store earlier this year. I thought they looked strange. I had already researched some very good reviews of them...and since they were only 6.99, I picked them up. The colors really are vibrant when you lay them down, the do look odd, chalky, off color and are hard. I just spray them down, or use a water brush and drip some water on them to activate. Also I picked up a 12 watercolor pencil set in Koh-i-noor Mondeluz and they are very nice. You are correct about these coming into 5 parts (with the lid) is a little too much to hang onto while painting out and about. I went back and bought a couple more of the wheel sets to have on hand, for gifts....or me.

    Hi Allen, thanks for the review. I bought a set here in Switzerland seven years ago, but never used them (I am on the brink of becoming a palette collector/hoarder...). Now I will try. By the way, if you have trouble with the mold due to humid climate, I heard that a piece of tissue paper with a few drops of clove essential oil in the palette (NOT ON the paints!) would take care of the mold spores. Have not needed it because the climate in our neck of the woods is temperate, but it might be worth a try in your corner of the world.

    • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  2 роки тому

      Wow. 7 yrs. Does it have the same packaging as mine? Thank you for the tip. I have clove oil here. I add it in our spirits and oils vaporator. I never though clove oil could also work even without putting it directly on the paints. I will definitely try that out. Thanks alot.

    • @goat8477
      @goat8477 2 роки тому +1

      @@AllanJayQuesada Hi Allan, yes, the packaging looks exactly the same. I believe they come in different sizes though because mine has three layers and yours has four. I had not really used them yet because while swatching them out years ago, they felt 'weird' - even with my veeeeery limited watercolor experience. Could not put my finger on it.... They just felt grainy, or chalky, yet at the same time very intense. Now that I know that they are dye-based it makes more sense to me. I will give them another chance I guess. And when used up I still can fill the nifty palette with my favorite colors ;-) The packaging is really cool for travel. Almost leakproof and compact.
      And yes, the vapors of the clove oil are enough to send the mold spores packing... In my house it sometimes discourages the ants to come in. Some other essential oils could work also (Rosemary, Oregano, Thyme, Tea tree oil) as many essential oils are not a welcoming environment for fungy, bacteria and even viruses.
      I love the ambient noises when your window is open - our birds sound so different ;-)
      Thank you for your work.

      Me too! I just got a set at Staples. :) I've been enjoying them. It's fun to use for plein air art - but I only use two trays at a time, because it's annoying to manage more than two trays at a time when doing plein air. So, I should say, it's fun to use for plein air art when limiting yourself to just one or two trays. If I have the koh-i-noor stack, a waterbrush, a towel, and a notebook, then I'm able to do spur of the moment watercolor - which is exactly what I wanted.

    If I'm right these are dye-based. I've read a review of this some years ago and I've been wanting to try them out. By the way they are under 500 from Deovir. I don't know why they are so overpriced on Lazada and Shopee.

    • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  4 роки тому

      Yes, it's dye based and I'm glad they are transparent about it in their msds sheet. So, i showed the data sheet here too for proof. Anyway, even if they dint say it's dye based, it's very obvious with its texture and behavior. Haha. Yes, the Lazada sellers are weird. Those sellers are from China. They even sell VanGogh tubes for 700php each when it's only 145 at deovir. Hehe

    I absolutely love my Brilliant dye based (professional) set. The analinky set is like mid grade and then they have a cheaper set I found on Amazon. The cheaper set was like painting with chalk. The richness and vibrancy of the inks are amazing and they layer beautiful. They work beautifully on hot press paper. Also the company responded promptly when I asked them for the color names for my color chart. I believe it is on the European site. If you are worried about light fastness, either scan your art or use a UV spray. Mine have lasted many years treated with the spray with no fading.

    These are dye based watercolours. They are not particularly lightfast but they are great for adding brilliant details and boost the colour on illustrations, improve their contrast and such things.They are great for sketches too. Their biggest advantage is that they are not granulating. You don't want granulation on the colours that you use for this purpose. They are a great and more affordable alternative of paints like Dr. Martins and Econline etc.
    You have to spray them with a bit of water in order to activate them before using them.

    • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  2 роки тому

      Yes you are right. And to add, a little goes a long way so this is very economical to use. In the Philippines where it is humid, i didn't have the need to spray water prior use. I loved how it activated instantly. My problem here now is that when you close them for long, they'll get molds.

    • @creativecolours2022
      @creativecolours2022 2 роки тому +1

      @@AllanJayQuesada If your paints are already contaminated with mold you need in the first place to wash the discs under running water in order to remove the mold from the paints. Then dry the excess water with some paper towels and then you'll have sterilize with alcohol the underside of the discs in order to make sure that there are no mold spores on the undersides.And then dry the whole thing from both sides with a hair drier. Then put it back together and keep it in a sunny place.
      It sounds more complicated than it actually is. The concept is to make sure to remove completely the mold and dry completely everything before putting the discs together.
      Is it so humid in Philippines? I thought that it was a rather hot and dry place.
      Greetings from Athens that it is super hot and dry these days.

      @@creativecolours2022 thanks for the tips. I washed it and dried it and kept it open with fresh air. So far, it hasnt gotten any molds. But will treatnit again with alcohol to be sure.
      Yes, it is very humid here around 50 to 90% as we are surrounded with seas and oceans. Humidity adds to the heat so yes it is both hot and humid here. I heard Athens has a fairly nice weather and you don't get to have hurricanes there. 😊

    • @creativecolours2022
      @creativecolours2022 2 роки тому

      @@AllanJayQuesada It doesn't have hurricanes because Aegean and generally Mediterranean sea is not as large and open as the Oceans are but the weather is not that nice all year long either. It is cold and wet in the winter and dry and very hot during the summer. And now it is summer in Greece so it is not unusual to see temperatures up to 38-40 C. particularly in July. August is somewhat better because it is always windy. The islands though have a good amount of humidity particularly at nights even during the summer.
