TRIVIA: Patti Woodard (1879 - d. August 13, 1967) the actress known professionally as Jane Darwell, who portrays Mrs. Brenner in this episode, was one of the most recognizable "matronly" actresses of stage, film, and television. Her first acting appearance began in 1912, much to the disapproval of her father which is the reason she changed her name. By 1914 she was in demand and made 4 films before the end of the year. She signed on as a contract player with 20th Century Fox and [n the early 1930's she played in two Mark Twain inspired films - Tom Sawyer, and Huckleberry Finn - to critical acclaim. In 1934 she began to take reoccuring roles in Shirley Temple films, usually as the housekeeper or grandmother (she was in her 50's at the time). During her 50 years in Hollywood she appeared in 170 major motion pictures, including such renown classics as Gone with the Wind (1939), the great 1940 film adaptation of John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" (playing alongside a very young Henry Fonda with whom she would costar in several other films) a role in which Darwell received the 1941Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. By 1961, when she guest starred in this Lassie episode, Darwell had stopped doing films and was only taking on minor guest roles on TV, including playing "Grandmother McCoy" in an episode of the sitcom "The Real McCoys". Her last film role was in 1964 at the special request of Walt Disney who wanted her as the bird woman in his timeless film classic "Mary Poppins" (starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dike). Darwell died at age 87 three years later, and was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, California. (source: findagrave.com; and Wikipedia.org: Jane Darwell)
