There was a time when phones weren't boring. When we got new form factors all the time, but the interesting part of the story is how that led to more experimentation than true innovation. The last 15 years have been kind of wild, but the complete opposite. They all began with the most simplistic phone of them all.. The first iPhone. I still find it kind of bold for Apple to have dared to launch it and challenge everything we knew at the time, and get away with it. For me it then continues with the Samsung Galaxy Note, which literally jumpstarted the frenzy for ever larger, ever more-useful devices in our pockets..
But if you notice, this actually marked a shift where all the innovation of hardware took a step back into innovation of software. Who would've thought that the cab industry would kneel to the genius of two apps on a phone, and yet all while phones kept looking the same. Cameras got better, screens got crisper, processors on phones have overshadowed even some desktop solutions, but what didn't change was the form factor of the phone. Some could even say, why should it? When simplicity is taken to its minimum expression, where is there more room to grow and innovate? And I say grow because companies know consumers want larger and larger screens that can still fit in your pocket.
The solution? This is the Samsung Galaxy Fold, a tablet when you need it, a phone when you don't, and probably one of the coolest pieces of tech to be launched in years. Sure it did have kind of a rocky start, as has every single new product launched in the past, I mean who doesn't remember the blue screen of death at the launch of Windows 95. Thing is, it's finally here, and I decided to take my time, give it a month of use, and tell you how it all turned out. I'm Jaime Rivera with Pocketnow, and this is our review of the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

All I know I'm getting one and don't care about the price
I love the galaxy fold I've had mine for 6 days now
Lucky u 😔😔
Yassine yassine i was the firt person to get one from the Samsung store at marion South Australia
Again LUCKY u 😔😔😔
One punch King. Ok it launched on 30 oct in Australia
One punch King. True that i sold my galaxy note 9 to get this phone
2011: note 1 is too big with 5.3"
2019: 6" phones are normal size phones
Only in the west was that said about the Note 1, Asia lead the large screen movement, as usual (was living there when it hit).

"Who doesn't remember the BSOD of the launch event of Windows 95?" Jaime, what's the average age of the audience for your videos?
I’m 54 and I watch. The BSOD was a very real thing.
I built my own CP/M computer before the Microsoft PC arrived, but enjoy watching Pocketnow videos - once a geek, always a geek 😊
I'm old enough to remember that it was actually Windows 98 that blue screened during the demo of USB.
Im 39 and work in IT and i remember it ?
@@papigrande4378 I mean, i may still be a thing. I just havent had in a while on Windows 10 Pro (Granted im on Bootcamp)
3:30 The price tag is what really leads to massive discomfort in my pocket
AGREED
So all that hurts is the money in your pocket leaving you and replaced by a galaxy fold
6:11 That meme though
Got into a samsung store just to have a look. I wasn't there to buy it. The staff put the phone in my hands while saying: This is the future! I couldn't believe how beautiful the device was. I ended up walking out the shop with the phone in my pocket with the awarenes I purchased something special and unique of it's kind.
This is one of your best reviews I have seen from you Jaime. Keep up the good work 👍
Thanks dude!
Had mines for 2 weeks now. I love it. Front Screen could be a little bit longer and wider but it gets the job done.
Agreed. The front screen isn't perfect but it's plenty fine for ONE-HANDED USAGE which many people seem to forget that THAT'S what Samsung intended. They even said it at the keynote.
People are hating on this thing like it isn't a first gen product, like Samsung could learn how to increase durability for the average consumers life outside of a factory\lab type setting, like Samsung could improve it without feedback from consumers whom actually have it in their hands, and if you're complaining about the price, it's a first gen product and probably not for you if you cannot pay to play.
I like the device. I think it’s cool. Is there ups and downs for it? Yup but does it make it the worse device ever? Nope. I have a galaxy s10 plus and a iPad Air 2 I got my s10 plus for my birthday in June for the bigger battery. Love the phone. I even like the altra wide angel lens. But now I really want the galaxy fold!!!! Might have to wait till next June. I will admit. The main front display is gonna take time gettin used to. I’m so used to big phone displays. But it’ll be easier typing with the tablet opened. Just might take time for it closed when typing. The device is really interesting.
jordan rausch I'm a big fan of it, I was going to buy one back in April to review on my channel but that obviously got botched and I ended up needing to spend the money elsewhere, so I'll probably review gen 2.
@@TechDove nice. Isn't gen 2 only the new flip phobe thing. That folds like the old school phones?
Love my fold! Best phone I have ever used.
Agreed. It's a beast
I remember when Nokia phones were weird but very innovative. Now all phones trying to be the same. Till the fold. Im happy for innovation
"I DO believe in Foldables...."
Wow, Jaime
If I had two pennies for every time you said, "A solution looking for a problem" last year, I'd afford to buy TWO Galaxy Folds
It's an amazing device if it has changed your mind this drastically already

Fold 2 with an S-pen
Bruh. You can damage the screen with your fingertips, an S-pen would F it in the first second.
@@marashah.ibrahim hopefully the screen will be stronger.
Whatever Fold brings an S-pen will be an instant buy for me
Or rather note fold .

Easily the best new technology ever. I'll be buying the GalaxyFold2 in April 2020 definitely.

This is the nonsense iPhone users get accused of...”You can’t afford it!” If a “sheep” says it everyone’s hind parts get all chapped, but if an Android user indulges in that tomfoolery, then it’s somehow funny? All of us in the “tech world” need to grow up...albeit to varying degrees. Not liking something equates to being destitute? Yeah, hilarious...some people have 4-5 phones 50-60+/- years old, but don’t own a house. That’s a sad worthless life and financial situation...stop projecting.
I know this comment is old, but love the way he says: I'm Jaime Rivera 😂
His parents would whip his rear for not pronouncing it in proper Spanish. LOL. My last name is Oropeza, and if I didn't roll that "r" my family elders would disown me. LOL
@@victororo462 LOL
Good one
Real talk... The only reason people are hating on this... Is becuz they can't buy one. This phone is really cool
Respectfully disagree. I’m fortunate in many ways and could buy it if I chose but there’s many reasons I wouldn’t not limited to-plastic screen, no S pen, limiting outer screen just to name a few. I buy my phones outright and just wouldn’t spend the money on this. I’d rather see where the technology is in a few years. Symbolic status isn’t going to cut it.
Glad You Took Extra Time
With This Review A+
Watching this on my Galaxy A10e while I save up for the Galaxy Fold before 2019 is over.
I think the galaxy fold is the best smart phone I've used in the last 10 years. I love mine and consider it a great purchase for someone that is accustomed to treating electronics with care. As my daily driver since launch, I cannot imagine having to go back to a slab phone for daily use any longer. Of course, as with all smart phones since the original iphone, screen durability will always be something to add to the improvements lists for successive versions.
i think you're the best reviewer in my opinion... very classy and great opinion on this new device. well rounded review with good and bad and then making a home run with a great point: "I'm not gonna bash it because, really, what am I gonna compare this product to?" really great point.
Watching this on my fold !!
This really is the future the fact that people think it's not I am gonna laugh straight at them in about a year and half lol.
You're 100% right. After using my Fold for a week and taking it on a road trip....I don't need to pull out my Surface Book...even for work. This is amazing. Could it use improvement? Yes...the front screen should be 6" as well. Other than that, love this phone.
@@joshuagilman8594 yup i get what Samsung tried to do and this is still a good product and luckily for the next fold they build on what they did and improve it as well.
Best review I've seen so far on the Galaxy Fold. Awesome work! Orgullo Catracho🇭🇳
Gracias Gustavo!
Love the Pixar like lamp on the table!
Love Rivera's reviews. Keep up the great work!
I love my Fold. Not as fragile as some people might think. I don't carry it in a "special sock" and I'm using it just like I use any other phone. I use the front screen a lot, more than I thought I would. Love it!!!
Even if the other reviewers reviewed it, i waited for you 👌
Thanks dude! Durability was important. We prefer to take our time
Props to Samsung for pushing the boundaries of innovation.
6:11 nice to see how professionaly the pocketnow crew treat his communication lines
I bought the fold and love it. Yes it's strangely great.
It is the future and pathway of tech and innovation that will hopefully lead to more innovations and thinking outside the box
The future has begun, and Samsung leads, and will lead in the future as well.
Agreed.
I have had every version of the iPhone and got this a little over a month ago. While I do still have an iPhone because you know “ecosystem” I also have the fold as my company phone and just can’t put it down. I catch myself putting down the iPhone and forgetting about because I can just do so much more on the fold. It is now my daily driver and I love it. Multitasking is the absolute bomb!!! Great honest review of a first generation product.
I've had my fold since the day it was released, no regrets at all.
Great video, I can tell a lot of effort went into it 👏🏻💪🏼
When you said that people love big screens now, it made me realize how much I still hate it. I'm using an Xperia XZ1 Compact & iPhone 6S right now
'Galaxy Fold' is the Innovative Phone of the Year
It is an amazing phone and I love mine, so glad im one of the first to be a part of the foldable experience/experiment 😉
I love how it looks and how it works
Man, Jaime you make one of the best tech reviews on youtube
Thanks dude!
@@Pocketnow I would agree.
@@merson812 not better than Flossy Carter
Watching this on my Fold was amazing
I didn't know the the launcher didn't sync up between the screens, but I actually love that since they're such different sizes. It sounds amazing for them to not to sync up so that they can be more personalized for one's use cases. It would be nice if you could turn on a toggle for them to sync with each other though, but I definitely don't want them to force it.
I quite like the aspect ratio of my Note10, it's just so much nicer for me than Apple's wider, shorter approach.
That phone is so insanely cool and I’d love to be able to try one! Still love my iPhone 11 though, and actually don’t have to worry about that one in my pocket - or the rain.
finally someone ran Kindle in their review.. THANK YOU!
3:56 call me when that lines gone
experiment54 My thoughts exactly it looks awful.
After using the fold, its hard for me to go back to the normal phone. I just wished it had a s-pen or I am able to use it on the fold.
Makes me want this fold...
This review was really honest and good. 🙌
I agree in a few years when all the little things about the phone can be fixed a foldable device will be nice to have.
I wood love to love it , thanks Samsung Canada!!😩
This past weekend everyone was literally asking about my Fold. " Wow what's that" Oh can I hold it etc etc. People were thrilled. It's my daily driver now
Same bro. Just like he said when u go out and put it down people immediately ask about it haha
Galaxy Flex
I can't wait until the cameras are underneath the screens, then I'm going back to the Note series from my current S10+.
This is something that I want in about 3 years. I'm definitely not an early adopter--still got my iPhone SE!
I’m so happy that this didn’t have mid-advertisements likes some tech youtubers. Hehehe
I... actually like the idea of the smaller screen being completely independent of the inner one. I'd rather not have my layout for a wide screen be copied over to a very small one-handed one.
Great video Mr Rivera. I'm so glad Samsung fixed the Galaxy folds problems. Thank you for always doing great attention to detail videos of all the tech you review.
Thanks dude!
Thank you for saying it needs a larger screen when closed to be used as a normal phone!
You're completely missing the point of the outer screen. It's supposed to be narrow so it can be used ONE-HANDED. Samsung intended it to be like this.
I'm guessing you've never used an iPhone 5S or earlier 4-inch phone model??? They're narrow and excellent for one-handed typing.
Yes I wish the outer screen on the Fold didn't have chunky bezels BUT the current width of the outer screen is nowhere near as bad as some people make it out to be.
Samsung should make a Note 10+ sized outer screen for a future Galaxy Fold 3 or something to cater to people who DO NOT like using phones one-handed.
This has been a complaint by every single reviewer.
@@PSYCHOV3N0M It doesn't matter what was 'intended'; what matters is usability and what people want.
I want a larger screen on the front...other than that, like this phone a lot and people are surprised when I unfold mine.
i cant wait for version 2 but im more likely to buy version 3
I think the innovation is great and we have to applaude that but its first gen. I love the idea but I'll wait for the next couple of versions before I seriously consider buying this. Can't wait to see the next versions! Great video!
Really good video!! It’s really close for a 1st gen product!
Hey jaime, any idea when can we see you reviewing mate 30 pro?
Anton just reviewed it on our website! Have a read
Fold4 user. I'm glad I skipped on the first generation Fold, as polarizing as it was, it absolutely was a 1st generation device. I got in on the Fold2, then the three and now I'm here. I really enjoy the Fold line and look forward to the line further maturing.
I want a flip-phone the size of a Motorola StarTAC or V10 that when you open it it becomes one large screen, a 3 lens camera and a small screen for notifications and a clock on the outside.
That's the kind of product that should make a comeback ASAP...
How is it with games?
9:40 Install Nova Launcher to have continuity of the outer and inner screen icons/folders arrangement.
I love the idea of the fold and I think it looks gorgeous. The only reason I dont own one is because of the front screen so I turned my attention to the Note 10.
I would LOVE to try one tho.
I could've but I need that water and dust resistant. South Florida rain is crazy.
I'm impressed by the Screen-on-Time of the Fold. I can get up to 9+ hrs of SoT. The thing is, i mainly use the big screen on almost the full brightness. Just sick.
6:10 OMG I recently started seeing that cat meme circulating around lololololololololololol but with other words.. lol that was a good one OMG lololololololololololololololololololololololololol🤣😂😅🤣🤣😅😅😂😅🤣😆
Great review, nice quote.
Thanks Lee!
Great review and production value.
Glad to see Samsung is innovating.
That looks great, but my main concern is burn in from watching UA-cam videos, since 16:9 videos don’t fit the screen. I feel like the screen won’t look great after a couple years.
Most phones out now still deal with black bars on the top or bottom of UA-cam videos no matter what because it's all dependent on the aspect ratio the Uploader uses. Plenty of UA-cam channels have already switched to 21:9 aspect ratio. Most phones are 16:9 which means black bars on the top and bottom anyways.
Therefore, I see zero reason to be concerned with burn-in while watching UA-cam videos unless the channels you watch have a logo placed at the bottom corner of every video.
Black bars anywhere shouldn't cause burn-in. OLED screens by nature will all degrade over time no matter what. Peak brightness will drop little by little.
PSYCHO it’s not the black bars that cause the burn in. It’s more of a reverse burn in, where the inner parts of the screen appear pretty burned in, while the parts of the screen where the black bars are, appear overly bright and saturated.
I wonder whether you could watch youtube videos in 1080 p or 2K ....? This is the perfect combination of a phone, and a tablet PC.
I'm still rocking my LG V10 and V20. Lots of budget phones now over power these past flagships. But they still work without a hitch. Never really understood people who keeps upgrading to the latest phones every year when they have a perfectly working phone still. I guess I just have low standards.
This is the best review I’ve ever seen from you.
Thanks dude!
I totally agree. This is the future. Heck it's what I've always wanted really a phone that can be a tablet too. The problems for me are three though. Price , power and durability. Samsung needs to lower that price point to around 1350. If you can do that you've gained a customer in me. Second the battery life needs to last like a tablet. Almost 2 days battery life, Or a 6000mah battery. And lastly durability. Most people will agree that they don't necessarily treat their phones like newborn babies and I am no exception. They need foldable glass in the fold to create screen durability that can't be damaged by your fingernails.
Dope phone review. The galaxy fold review it deserve 👍🏽
Thanks
Great review!
By Far the most accurate review of the Fold
Great video👏🏾
Thank you شكرًا لك
too delicate, too pricey. I agree, check back in two more generations
I currently have the Note 10+, but I'm thinking about the Fold 4.
Excellent review as always. When they figure out how to have one of these with an S-Pen, that will absolutely rock. Yeah, I know that’s not possible with a foldable screen right now. But innovation will make it possible. I love that Samsung is innovating so much.
I’d love an S Pen as well!
A premium quality video for a premium device, thanks a lot for this excellent review!
And I agree with you in almost every point you made.
I for myself decided to keep my Galaxy Fold 5G (that is what we get in Germany) and use it as my primary device, because I'm so enthusiastic about it, that I take the disadvantages into account, but go with the advantages.
Though I will keep my S10+ as a backup for some more time.
I like it , to me its just missing the s-pen for me to jump in !
You'll have to wait for foldable glass to arrive in the Fold 2 or 3
mk1212wq I’ll take the s-pen and a front display that uses the entire back side. To me the latter was so much of a no brainer that I think Samsung didn’t do it on purpose.
i never mocked the note, always thought it was cool, wanted the 1st gen one at the time of its release! :D
I'm thinking of getting the escopar fold 2 :)
Ummm ... How about the mix alpha???
Long time coming
I never mocked the original note. Got the note 2 and that was a beast compared to anything else on the market at the time.
The fold at 3k aud is just crazy. But if you can get it for cheap (comparatively), go for it.

Great idea but fold 3 or 4 could be great products for now, just great idea, awesome I would say.
