To add backup on your analogy with cloud migration, I'm a ten-year senior Java enterprise developer working for the Defense Department. And I'm on the cloud migration team where we are JUST NOW comparing different CSPs before we even start migrating! Lord only knows how long the actual migration will take, but I'm guessing at least a few years. AND on your other analogy about COBOL, about 1/3 of our developers are COBOL programmers maintaining our central mainframe. :-D So yes, there will always be some old mess in legacy systems moving at glacial speed. Not everything is on the cutting edge. Now the old messes aren't a lot of fun to work on compared to the new sexy stuff, but they're certainly not eliminated. It's still a decent paycheck.
Thanks for sharing your real world experience! Most of the fear around AI comes from UA-camrs with no real world experience or CEOs pretending to be software engineers! Lol
I agree. I am from the old school of Basic, FORTRAN and Pascal. There are so many legacy programs and hardware out there that almost no one knows how to deal with.
not only that imagine 1 tiny driver issue on the platform that that AI's software runs on. Often AI's fail to take in the whole environment and they will not be able to detect the more physical stuff. So forget integrations with specific hardware. We won't be seeing it in the critical software that needs to be one point. I think even in normal projects maybe Devin and AI's could make like bigger parts of code but in the end it will still need humans that understand the structures to put them together. Not to mention that the people who need projects made need to understand UML. Likely each company will get its own AI to run in its servers. So my guess is that they'l be more like a digital assistant and likely will need some software engineers or data engineers to babysit them. Also people panicking in this idea of it will replace us, certain software already has. Remember when we had to manually make jumps in assembly and such languages or those times when we had to use pointers before java or the structs in C or older languages before objects even existed. IDE"s etc do that for us. AI will be similar.
That's exactly where i want work at! Thanks for confirming
You using Oracle?
Thanks for the feedback, everyone! I believe software engineering has a strong future, even alongside AI. This tech may change our work, but it opens up new opportunities. Focus on building solid coding fundamentals and problem-solving skills - those will always be valuable!
This video was for those who are unsure, love coding, and want to build a career in it. My goal was to offer hope and my honest take on AI's impact.
If some people are ready to give up, that's their loss! It means less competition and more opportunities for those who adapt, learn and level up their skills. So keep coding, keep learning, and get ready to thrive in the exciting new era of tech 💪

Hi Mosh! I've noticed you've become more active with creating new content, focusing on coding topics with deeper explanations! Keep it up! This approach is refreshing, especially amid the "negative" trends concerning AI and the software development job market discussed by most UA-camrs. Your positivity stands out-it helps those of us committed to upskilling, learning, and encourages us to persist and never give up. Thank you!

Hi Mosh! I am a software engineer now with three years of experience, I don't know if I have mentioned it before or not, but your free video about Python on UA-cam was one of the game changers for me. Just learning the basics you taught, I managed to impress my thesis professor who was so skeptical about my coding ability, as a mechanical engineer bachelor holder who wishes to do a career switch!
Thank you!
Keep on doing the great job please, for us who are hungry for learning, and for a better world!
And for others who read this comment, guys when it comes to connect different pieces of code, something like a docker-compose, AI starts to mostly return non-sense. Don't be afraid, keep learning, and be happy that you are in this great field.
By the way happy Nowruz!
Now i started to learn python from his videos but my friends told not to learn because of this AI. I didn't listen to them and thank you for motivating us
Thank You so much for your motivation and encouragement about coding. I been working on my python skills for a year now, and I’m not giving up, and I’m constantly getting better at it! At best AI is more of a tool to use, and not job ending.

I was also thinking the same......big organisations provide strict restrictions on copy pasting their code anywhere over the internet.
Knowing how to code is beneficial in understanding how the AI works. But trying to outsmart a computer that has 30 quadrillion times the calculation power of your organic brains is a losing battle.

Maybe I am not as experienced as Mosh, but I have 12+ years of experience in working as a software engineer and I have this feeling...
The video has the all answers whether you should keep learning or give up. Go for it and become a great software engineers and if there will be time when AI is about to replace you, this means there will be robots replacing workers, cleaners, craftsmen and AI dominates the whole world. So it does not matter what you are doing at that time...

You atleast need to know very specifically what you need to do in order to use it efficiently.
So I just see it as an opportunity for developers to work faster :
Focus less on the boilerplate and more on the problem solving aspect.
So AI acting as an assistant to programmers -- that sounds more likely.

It's scary.
I believe it can't totally replace a programmer because it can only handle chunks but with the way it is going right now, it might be able to handle and organize large collections of these program chunks in the future.
The main job of making the program work still relies on the ability of the human to put the correct order of these chunks. For now.
