When he was good, he was VERY, very good. But when he was bad, he was horrid ... So many subtle turns of phrase and well-controlled mezza-voce! But also some very ugly, constricted sounds.
Imo, Lauri Volpi like so many other great tenor's did take liberties with the music in live performances. Arguably the greatest tenor in the world from 1928 to 1940"Gigli". I must contradict you about constricted sound, as Volpi's voice was probably the freest sounding voice in history and never constricted. My parents saw him several times in Rome in the late 1930s and said that no voice they ever heard traveled further than Volpi's. His middle register was not great but his upper register was fantastic and he had the ability to do mezza voce and diminuendo at will. Yes, you may describe him as horrid when singing past the age of 65 but he's comparable to any great tenor at any age, except Caruso who belongs on a throne by himself. Volpi is 59 here, where most tenor's are shot
@@matveykurland7012 Caruso is NOT my favorite tenor, but I still believe that he belongs on a throne by himself. EC was the original interpreter for songs and arias for the new way of singing which every tenor after him emulated. I believe he was the foundation for every tenor that followed. Yes, Caruso passed at age 48, but Volpi and EC were both alive at age 48. Caruso also did not have the benefit of better recording technology that began in 1924. They were 2 completely different type tenors, where Volpi had a great facility in his upper high note register which helped him excel in the high note operas like Puritani, Gugliemo Tell, Ugonotti, which required high Cs and D-flats. But Volpi was also terrific as Manrico, Radames, Calaf, The Duke, and even I Pagliacci where a critic wrote in 1928, that ''Mr. Volpi was quite at home in a part which required no subtlety and gave him opportunities to demonstrate his ringing top tones.'' However Volpi had no problem singing in a subtle manner as demonstrated in La Boheme, Chenier, Rigoletto, Lucia, La Sonnambula, Faust, etc. Volpi writes that Caruso's voice and his style remains unique in the history of singing: unique because of the baritone quality of the voice, unique for his profound cordiality and humanity. It seemed as if his vocal chords, were not connected to his larynx, but situated to his cardiac muscle, and were moved by his blood flow and rhythm of his heart.

Bravissimo! Greatest maestro! Best tenore❤
ci lasciava 41 anni fa... Qui con lui il basso Giacomo Vaghi
Signori, così cantava a 59 anni. Trovate i difetti.
EINER DER ALTEN MEISTER
Se solo l avesse registrata 20 anni prima.... O almeno, almeno 10.

@Saint Bede
Can you point out these "ugli, constricted sounds?" . Minutes and seconds.. or be quite forever.....
@@sugarbist This is very unfair because Caruso died at the age of 48 so we cannot know how he would have sounded at 65.
