- In this video I discuss why I like the 2021 BMW M550i xDrive sedan and why I think it's better choice than the BMW M5. Both cars have the same TwinPower turbo V8 engine and both have the same torque (553 ft-lbs). The 2021 M5 has 600 horsespower and the M550i has 523.
Most importantly, a nicely optioned M5 will cost you $130K and a loaded BMW M550i is $94K. You can even make the comparison more extreme as the base M550i is just under $77K, with the twin turbo V8.
This is a full, real-world car review of the 2021 BMW M550i xDrive including driving impressions as well as full interior and exterior tours. After driving the M550i for a few weeks I also talk about what it's like to live with the car as a daily driver.

I really really loved that car. I get to drive a lot of different cars but not many of them are ones that I would really like to keep and that was certainly one. Everyone seems to test the M550 with the dynamic handling suspension. But I also read that the optional steering/suspension creates some unnatural responses. Have you tested one with the standard adaptive suspension? Is the optional suspension truly worth $3500 by comparison?
Hi there, I have only tested this particular M550 so I cannot compare it. I found the car really amazing, with a much smoother ride than the M5. If I was buying one, I would test drive both versions to see if I could tell the difference between the two suspension systems.

I recently purchased a very slightly used '22 M550i with ~10k miles on it. I don't have the dynamic handling package, or parking assist. I've put about 1k miles on it and, am extremely happy with the vehicle. The handling is just fine, though I wish I had had a chance to try out one with the dynamic handling before making this buy. My only complaint so far is the automatic engine shutoff, which I'm going to code off through the ODB soon.

Hey bro whats the difference besides price when it comes to the bower and Wilkins stereo system compared to the Harmon kardan?
bowers and Wilkins is a much more audiophile oriented system. There are 16 speakers with 1,400 watts and 10 amplification channels. There are also what's called diamond dome tweeters which have real diamonds in the tweeters because it provides the best sound quality. The speakers also look very cool, with a unique illumination coming from the inside. If you're really considering buying a car, I would test drive the speakers and I would check out a car with the Bowers and Wilkins and check out a different car with Harman Kardon and see which one you like the best listening to the kind of music or sound you like to listen to. I wouldn't pay that much without checking it out first. I’ve tested both speakers quite well. In terms of audible difference, the B&W system only justifies its price at louder volumes.
This is not to say that Harmon Kardon is crackly or anywhere near bad at louder volumes, but it depletes in purity as you turn it up (as is completely normal with any system even if it’s expensive).
The B&W speakers are just one step above with their ceramic cones, almost completely retaining purity throughout all stages of volume. As Fred also mentioned, they contain real diamonds and look quite cool so may be something you want if you’re into that.
Personally, I’m a teenager and music is extremely important to me, however I am still opting for HK on my M550i that I’ve ordered. This is because it will not hold resale value well in my domestic market, but I’m not sure about yours so you might want to look into that.
@@ae6905 I'm a sound guy I like music alot however I'm o ly gonna be leasing so is it worth paying the extra 100 a month? I'm gonna test drive both systems and see which one I like. I really am into stereo systems always had one in my car yrs ago an aftermarket one box amplifier radio etc. I just hope I'm not throwing away money. I had a 535 m sport with the Harmon karden and it didn't sound bad at all but looking at the bowers and wilkins I'm like dam I should take a chance and get a car with it it's only 3 yrs
G Wat If you are leasing without having equity in the vehicle at the end of the term, I would say it is a big no. If you have some equity, go for it because by the sounds of it, you are a huge audiophile.
Make the most out of those tests you’ll be doing. When I tested them, I played the same songs in one than in the other. Also, make sure the audio settings are identically/closely configured in the menu to get an accurate reading through your ears! Lastly, don’t be shy; Whack that volume knob as high as you would do if you were by yourself, because that’s where the difference will hit you. :)

How is the turbo lag on that?
With the V8 power, you don't notice any lag. It would be crazy fast even without the turbo, and remember its a dual turbo so one turbo is always spinning and the larger one starts when you jump on it.

Can I just say that there is no way I'd buy an M550i with Dakota leather, it looks just like the cheap embossed leather that Ford uses in their cars. I've had a Kia with nicer leather than Dakota leather.

@Yirlani Come on, there's a reason the M550i is twice as expensive as a Kia. A Stinger is a nice car, don't get me wrong, but it's not in the same league as this. Also, I'm not a fan of Kia, how can they sell cars without a spare tire?
@Yirlani the Stinger is a great car, but it’s no where near an M550 in terms of performance, interior quality, build quality, or tech.
@Yirlani You're allow to have a different opinion. And it's hard for me to give one on the Stinger as I haven't driven one. My brother in law just bought a used Kia Optima and it has no spare only a tire repair kit.
I loved driving the M550 and found it very exciting. There are a lot of drive modes and settings so your test drive may not have included the most aggressive sports settings.
For the trunk space, the M550's rear seats fold down to give you a lot of room. I like how it looks with a touch of sport, it's more of a sleeper. It looks like a regular 5-series until you hit the gas and use those 523 horses.

You are wrong, it's not about the money. I spent a few weeks in each and they are very different cars. If I had the money for the M5, I would still get the M550i as it's more usable but is still crazy fast when you jump on it.

@@JohnnyBlaze5680 Everyone? Here's some market stats: LCI m550's cost the same as used pre-LCI M5's (which are mechanically identical to current M5's) now; granted, some may always choose a newer car but I'm willing to bet that many buyers cross-shopped a used M5 and chose the m550 over it.
As an anecdote, I "have the money" for either model and I plan to buy an m550i, as I desire its comfort. Now if I had the money for multiple dedicated cars, the m5/m8 will definitely take the cake as a secondary daily.
