Nice initial review! I compared mine to the R5C & was surprised that in RAW + Clog2 in post, they are basically the same. The SRAW vs 4K fine Intra is actually a huge difference if you zoom in to even 100%, the SRAW has artifacts all over. Hopefully they can eventually fix this.

Hi Tyler! Thanks for the amazing video! In your eyes, how well does the R5ii’s image stack up against the Blackmagic? I currently own the blackmagic for video and another body to shoot stills and traveling. I am tempted to get the R5ii to replace both, but I’m unsure if I’ll see a big downgrade in video quality. What’s your opinions? How does Canon’s raw compare with BRAW?
Image quality alone, blackmagic wins hands down and BRAW is way better than canon raw. If you need an all in one hybrid, the R5II is as good as it gets in my opinion.
Looking forward to further updates, super interested in lowlight capability! I'm definitely in need of a lower spec camera to hand off footage to churches faster! Currently own a Komodo and Komodo X, have been entertaining the idea of trading my Komodo for a canon body and just having the KX + a Canon. I've done a lot of work with the Fx3 and it's amazing but I don't know if I'd own one just due to me having canon glass. Been trying my best to not just fall into the cycle of constantly buying gear and using what I've got. Appreciate the time you put into youtube as well as your involvement on the facebook group!
I need to do more testing but from what I’ve gathered, it’s a decent match to KX but the best b cam that I’ve used that isn’t red is the blackmagic 6k FF and in many cases I prefer the image of that over the KX!
It amazes me how Canon can't just have False Color overwrite view assist while its enabled haha. How do you feel about the video menu? I definitely preferred the R5 mark i for selecting frame rates/resolutions.
Don‘t you miss an assignable button to toggle waveform on and off? For me it‘s annoying to block a huge portion of my composition (especially in the evf)
Thanks man, this is the first real world video for me besides all this unboxing and fancy YT studio guys! I also have it since two days and had my first job yesterday. Used is as B-Cam to my C70 and was really impressed. For sure you can't push the shadows as much as on the C70 but it's so much better than on the normal R5! Have you also tested in which modes you have the least problems with moire/aliasing?
Ya the c70 shadows are something else! I definitely think the highlights hold up much better than the c70 though. I haven’t really tested specially for moire or anything.
Thanks Tyler.. with the recording time limits and file formats what is the best quality you think you can go to where overheating and camera turning off wouldn't be an issue? (1080p only..4k in a simpler format?) Ie. I would film the occasional long event like a wedding or a school concert.. so wondering if this camera could cope if I don't mind a bit of compromise on the really high end file formats? Thanks!
I just picked up mine about an hour ago and I'm noticing a white circle that appears in the final video. I noticed it in some of the early preview videos people put out also. Have you noticed it?
Hi Tyler, nice vid and cool shots. I agree with you on the 4k s-raw. I didn't think that'd be a thing for me but it looks fab and much more efficient than the 8k. The lack of downsized high frame rate options in compressed codecs is a major setback, dunno why they couldn't have done it like the R5C which is great for frame rate options. Does it do a crop mode in higher fps? For example, the R5C will let you record in an S16 crop (which is a 3k image) in RAW at 120 fps. I love the shot of the girl at 4:52 by the way, sometimes I feel guilty about filming people in public with a long lens but you can get some lovely shots that way. I'm just picking up the 200-800 today and it'll be great for 'street videography' like this.
I wouldn’t turn down non-line skipped HFR, but honestly, the sraw looks really good that it’s hard to complain too much. I just wish there was a 4K120 sraw option like there is in the Nikon Z8. No better frame rates in crop mode I don’t think but I also haven’t used crop mode yet either. Thanks for dropping by!
I sold my fx3 to purchase the R5II so I can’t compare directly right now until I rent or borrow one but having graded a ton of fx3, the R5II seems to have more flexibility in the image with clog2 in addition to internal raw recording. Since I do stills for work as well, the R5II for me is a far superior camera than fx3 and I have zero regrets selling it.

great video, however you kind of triggered me when you said the r5ii is not much better than the r5 for stills. The r5ii has pre shooting, higher dynamic range, and better auto focus for stills.
The DR is same in photo mode. The rest is true but not an important thing for most of the users. The AF still needs some work, in anima AF mode it struggles with my cat a lot.
Hahaha of course there are improvements but I could care less about those things for how I work. Seems like most of those things are useful for sports and wildlife which i don’t really do.
@@TylerEdwards Mine doesnt wobble at all I can see (35mm 1.4 vcm), but I saw stuff on forums of people saying their RF lenses that have IS inside were wobbling like crazy. Even their 24-70. Maybe there is something going on and it will be fixed later? Idk
I noticed on my R52 that if you switch from 4k fine and go to crop movie mode, and then Switch back to full frame mode it dumps you into 4k line skipped. Just beware of that. And I also notice that if you create C1 through C3 camera profiles it has a bug where it overwrites the Color profile from the last one you set. For example if you set C1 to Log, and C2 to Canon 709 profile, it will change your C1 setting from Log to Canon 709 as well. Really weird.
For film makers I wouldn’t even consider this camera. The Z8 has reached a peak in terms of what a hybrid camera can achieve. The R5C too with its many downsides such as the lack of IBIS, terrible AF and battery life. Now that red will ditch rf, it’s time to go Sony or Nikon. Canon is not gonna be the leader in hybrids.
I used the z8 for a few months and although it is a great camera, the R5II is better for video with much better codec and color space options and way better AF. It also lacks a MI shoe to be able to utilize for audio like on R5II and Sony bodies. If Nikon puts R3D with RWG/L3G10 is their mirrorless bodies, that will certainly change the conversation. But for now, no, the Z8 is not peak hybrid based on my experience.
@@TylerEdwards how is any of the r5ii codecs superior to the ProRes in the Z8 which is oversampled? The digital noise in the r5 is terrible the 4k raw has horrible artifacts. The r5c has a far superior image to that of the r5ii for video. Try rendering any of the raw video footage with the slightest NR applied to get rid of that digital noise and you’ll be looking at 3-5 fps export speeds on a fully specced out MBP. That’s terrible. The compressed raw of Nikon does much better in terms of usability.
@@scottmh prores hq is great but impractical in most cases. That leaves nraw (which is good) and h265 4:2:0 compressed which is weird. R5II has a great 10-bit 422 codec with 4-channel audio.
