Στο πλαίσιο του Β΄ Κύκλου Διαλέξεων Από τον Ευφράτη στην Ερυθρά Θάλασσα: διαδρομές πολιτισμών στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο κατά τη Βυζαντινή περίοδο που διοργανώνει το Ευρωπαϊκό Κέντρο Βυζαντινών και Μεταβυζαντινών Μνημείων (ΕΚΒΜΜ) για το ακαδημαϊκό έτος 2023-2024, πραγματοποιήθηκε στις 26/04/2024 η διάλεξη του Καθηγητού Koray Durak με τίτλο: Syria: the bridge between the Byzantine and the Islamic worlds in the early medieval period.
Περίληψη
Η διάλεξη έχει ως στόχο να παρουσιάσει την πολύπλευρη φύση των Βυζαντινών και Ισλαμικών σχέσεων που δεν μπορούν να περιοριστούν μόνο στις στρατιωτικές ή στις εμπορικές. Στο παράδειγμα του Βυζαντινού-Συριακού συνόρου, κατά τον πρώιμο Μεσαίωνα θα συζητηθούν οι στρατιωτικές, διπλωματικές και εμπορικές ανταλλαγές μεταξύ των δύο κόσμων μέσω της Συρίας. Θα επιχειρηθεί να προσδιοριστεί η γεωγραφική ενότητα της Συρίας και ο όρος Συρία στις Βυζαντινές πηγές, ενώ, τεθεί το ερώτημα, αν η Συρία ήταν ένα απλό βήμα ή μια γέφυρα για τις ανταλλαγές μεταξύ των δύο μακρινών πρωτευουσών, της Κωνσταντινούπολης και της Συρίας.

In the framework of the Second Lecture Series: From the Euphrates to the Red Sea: cultural exchanges in the Eastern Mediterranean during the Byzantine period, organized by the European Centre for Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Monuments (EKBMM) for the academic year 2023-2024, on 26/04/2024, the lecture of Professor Koray Durak entitled: Syria: the bridge between the Byzantine and the Islamic worlds in the early medieval period
Abstract
Τhis presentation aims to show the multifaceted nature of the Byzantine-islamic relations that can not reduced only to military, or commercial. In the example of the Byzantine-Syrian frontier in the early Middle Ages I will discuss the military, diplomatic and commercial exchanges between the two worlds via Syria. I will attempt to define the geographical unit of Syria and the term Syrian in the Byzantine sources while I will ask whether Syria was a mere stepping stone or a bridge for the exchanges between two distant capitals, Constantinople and Syria.
