The Roman fortress walls of Eboracum

This remarkable survivor is the Multangular Tower part of the legionary fortress of the 6th legion based at Eboracum now modern York. This section of roman wall last saw action during the Civil War in the 17th cent.

If these walls could talk.... I'm always fascinated by the areas in the walls where work was done, either to repair or to fill. Amazing they still stand and are so accessible.

Are the red bricks definitely used as a levelling course? I think the Romans knew how to build without using coloured bricks. It’s interesting they are also seen on the Roman lighthouse, Dover, several levels of them equidistant and then one not. It’s hard to tell if they were decorative (as well as any other use) because there is a section of the tower that they are covered over on the surface and that could be modern or original. Any thoughts? In this video 1:36 they appear to be part of the finished wall face and look very nice as a decorative element.

Yes the tiles acted as levelling course and also in some cases tied the two outer faces together with a rubble core in the centre. Decoration was certainly a consideration as these sections facing the main southern road route would have made a bold statement to approaching travellers and potential enemies
