MMT Is A Lens, Not A Regime

Professor Bill Mitchell, discussing the nature of Modern Monetary Theory. People sometimes say "if we had MMT," or "when we have MMT," but this misunderstands what MMT is. MMT is a lens to view and make sense of the existing world, not a proposal for changing it. (Though there are some proposals that many MMTers agree upon, particularly the Job Guarantee.)
Professor Mitchell also outlines two alternative ways to view the role of the economy, one he associates with a "neoliberal" ideology, and one he declares is a "progressive" vision.

Conservatives have instinctively understood MMT for the best part of 40 years - that's why they have only ever pretended to care about government debts and deficits - the only time conservatives make any noise about Ds&Ds is when they aren't in power and they browbeat lefties and liberals to "fix" the debt.
And the left wingers and liberals fall for it every time - expending all their efforts on "fixing" the debt so that they never get around to implementing any of their own policies.
Genius really.

​@@5ynthesizerpatel genius?? I'd call it evil. Idk how anyone who understands MMT can continue to be fiscally conservative considering how many people die due to unnecessary, imposed austerity. And some have the nerve to call themselves Christians!!
But yes, the Left constantly shoots itself in the foot, so to speak..

Few things are less understood than the modern monetary systems of monetarily sovereign nations. The narrative lie that our government is dependent on taxes for funding is perhaps the biggest lie ever sold to the public.
