Summary(Important Notes) of The Fiqh of Salah Episode 13: Salat Al-Witr In Hambali Madhab, Prayers that are not obligatory(Nafil and Sunnah) are of 5 types: 1. Sunan Al-Rawatib(Routine Sunnah prayers) - Prayers which are linked with the five daily prayers, either before or after. 2. Salat Al-Witr(the Witr Prayer) - The timing of Witr is between Isha and Fajr, it can be prayed any time after the timing of Isha. So if you do Jam’a between Maghrib and Isha and you pray Isha before it’s time, then you are not allowed to pray Witr. This is one opinion. The other opinion is that you can pray after you pray Isha regardless of the time Isha starts. Witr implies Tahajjud in some Hadiths and even the scholars have used it interchangeably. Hadith of Abu Hurairah says: “The Prophet(SAW) commanded to me pray Witr before I go to sleep.” The meaning of Witr in this Hadith is Tahajjud. Tahajjud is called Witr because Tahajjud is prayed in an odd number of Rakahs and is finished with Salat Al-Witr. So some Hadith(and Fiqh books) refer to the entire Tahajjud as Witr, and other Hadith(and Fiqh books) say Witr only for the ending, i.e, the actual separate Salat Al-Witr. The least number of Rakah for Witr is one Rakah, the most number is 11 Rakah. The least that will be considered perfect is 3 which is 2+1. The Prophet(SAW) said: “The night prayer is 2,2 and when you think it is about to be dawn, then finish it with one.” Nonetheless, praying only one Rakah as Witr is considered lazy and shallow. Imam Ahmed said: “I don’t think any Mu’min can give up Witr.” According to some Madhabs, if a person does not pray Witr, his testimony is not accepted because his Imaan is considered low. In all three Madhabs, Witr's prayer is not obligatory but the Hanafi Madhab says that it is Wajib. The maximum of 11 Rakah comes from the Hadith of Aisha(RA). There have been narrations where the Prophet(SAW) prayed 4 and 4 with one Salam in between and then 3 Rakah to end it. The Prophet(SAW) also prayed 8 Rakahs straight without a single Salaam and then 3 to end it. The Witr is either three Rakah with one Salaam or three Rakah without any Salaam. In the third Rakah, it is recommended to tell Dua Al-Qunoot after raising from the Ruku. Dua Al-Qunoot has a bit of controversy as to when it should be recited. For Maliki and Shafi Madhabs, it is not recited in Witr. Rather it is recited around Fajr time or in Fajr prayer respectively. For Hanafi and Hambali Madhabs, it is recited in the Witr prayer. But Hanafis do it before Ruku and Hambali Madhab does it after. This ends the entire summary. Anyone who thinks I have missed some point is welcome to reply but please give the time in the lecture when Shaykh Dr. Yasir Qadhi talked about it so that I can be sure. JazakaAllah Khair

1. Sunan Al-Rawatib(Routine Sunnah prayers) -
Prayers which are linked with the five daily prayers, either before or after.
2. Salat Al-Witr(the Witr Prayer) -
The timing of Witr is between Isha and Fajr, it can be prayed any time after the timing of Isha. So if you do Jam’a between Maghrib and Isha and you pray Isha before it’s time, then you are not allowed to pray Witr. This is one opinion. Witr implies Tahajjud in some Hadiths and even the scholars have used it interchangeably. Hadith of Abu Hurairah says:
“The Prophet(SAW) commanded to me pray Witr before I go to sleep.”
The meaning of Witr in this Hadith is Tahajjud.
